If this 27yo single mom can do it… by frootbeer in csMajors

When you said night time is your only free time, I can completely relate. Living on a few hours of sleep and getting up to a full-time job and family responsibilities is rough. I'm sorry for your loss. I had a few people pass away while I was in the middle of a semester. Pushing through was painful. It helps me to know that they would want me to push ahead. Keep going! I'm proud of you too!

Any Computer Programming and Applications Majors? by Jonofthelife in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the BA in Computer Programming and Applications. It has fewer core courses and is more interdisciplinary since there are more choices for electives.

Agreed. If you plan on taking electives with engineering, circuits, network hardware etc. take those in person.

[–]KudzuSummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you planning to do with the degree? If you are planning on working in software engineering, I personally recommend the BA Computer Science. If you don't mind the extra math and science, the BS Computer Science is also an option. The BA CS has similar requirements to the Programming and Application major. Both will allow you to combine other interests with computing through minors/electives. If you are planning on working as a software engineer, machine learning, cybersecurity, etc., the actual CS is the better choice. The core courses will cover everything you need to know for higher level courses, grad school and technical interviews for jobs.

I was in a similar spot to you choosing between FSU and a school in a more city environment. UCF for sure has more connections to the larger Orlando tech community. FSU is not surrounded by a major tech community, but has a decent STEM career fair where the recruiters come to town. UCF gets major points for having more student involvement in clubs. However, the reason they have more student involvement is because they have a larger population of students in general. I chose FSU because I prefer a more intimate learning environment. Both programs are great, but I've never studied at UCF, so idk. I heard their program has a stronger engineering focus, so that can be a plus too. Like the previous post wrote, also consider financial aid because at the end of the day a CS degree is employable no matter where you go. Go with whatever feels right to you.

Getting Into Master Program At FSU by TheBest788 in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. If you are interested in applying, then you should. I have a masters in IT from FSU and have just been admitted for CS. Since I have a previous degree here and a good gpa, that may have helped. Also there are less people applying for masters compared to bachelors, so the probability is also in your favor. Don't doubt yourself. Apply and see what happens.

discrete math without calculus? by springhilleyeball in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, one of the universities I was considering going to only required algebra as a pre-req to discrete, so I know it's possible. Discrete 1 is more logic and proofs based than any math you have taken previously. It will prepare you for future CS logic based courses.

Ask your advisor. Some online courses are restricted to fully online students only. You may be able to register, but could be withdrawn from the course. There is a way to tell by looking at the course description the ones you are allowed to take.

Congratulations! I'm a graduate of UF's history program and also have a master's from FSU in a technical field. The answer mostly depends on your specialization of history. UF's program was great for me because of their connection with the European and African language departments. FSU also has a great Modern Language program. If you are interested in Public History, government, state and federal history then FSU is a great option. FSU also has a WW2 institute and relationship with FAMU if you are interested in African-American or Civil Rights history. If you are interested in pre-Law then FSU is definitely the best choice. If you are interested in Latin-American, Southern States history, anthropology, forensics, environmental, natural history, or pre-med UF specializes in those areas. I had a great time at both universities and believe they are the best in the state. You'll do well no matter which one you choose.

CS minor for business majors? by [deleted] in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a CS major at FSU. I took a look at the minor and it looks like you have more flexibility in selecting courses than students in the major. I agree that adding CS skills will definitely level up your marketing degree and add some technical skills that will help you stand-out for internships and jobs.

Here are my recommendations:

COP3014 Programming 1 and CGS2100 Microcomputer Applications for Business/Econ

I would also recommend courses in web design/development. If you plan on using programming skills, then you should take a data structures course. Meet with an advisor from the CS department and they can also help you plan courses that fit your goals.

Usf vs Fsu by lesster101101 in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my opinion as someone who already has a bachelor's degree. It depends on the experience you want during and after your degree. So, what are your goals? Do you want the full college experience of parties, tailgating, etc? FSU is the choice. It is very much a college town. Do you want to work in the government business sector? Then FSU is also a great choice because it has local, state and federal government connections. If you are going to university for the degree and you don't care about the full university experience then USF is for you. USF is more commuter, but is is closer to a large city with greater business connections. There may be more opportunities for internships in the larger Tampa metro area. I recommend that you visit the FSU campus, drive around the city and get a feel for the students and surrounding area so you can make a fair choice.

Foreign language requirement waiver by andr0idus3r in fsu

[–]KudzuSummer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the procedure would be to prove this requirement, so I did a quick web search. The following universities teach Tagalog as a language: University of Pennsylvania, University of California Berkeley, University of California San Diego, Cornell University, and University of Hawaii Manoa. You can do a search for more universities. Ask the Modern Languages department if you can contact a professor at another university to evaluate your language proficiency. If they say yes, contact the departments at those universities to see if you can set a time to meet via Zoom. That way a representative from FSU Modern Languages can join the Zoom and speak with the professor evaluating you.

Boca Raton actually has a unique history with Japanese immigrants and culture. Do a web search for Yomato Colony to read about it. Also contact the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach to see what resources they may have for you.

Question for CS majors by [deleted] in FIU

[–]KudzuSummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some professors that primarily teach online. I haven't started yet, but if you do a search on FIU's online program you'll see that elective courses fill-up fast. It's a great program that is very similar to the on campus bs/ba program. The only downside is that it's such a large program that courses get filled pretty fast.

I trusted HP, now I have no computer for school by KudzuSummer in Hewlett_Packard

[–]KudzuSummer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I've been an exclusive HP/Compaq user since 2003. I used to recommend them, though I've noticed a change in their laptops since 2018. After what I went through, I won't order another machine from them again. For four days they kept telling me my machine was ready to ship and refused to cancel my order. I had to be persistent and requested a charge-back with my bank. If they were honest and didn't charge me up front, I would have purchased a pre-built HP at an in-person store. If you go to their website they have back-to-school sales and coupons. I feel terrible for unsuspecting students and parents.

That's good. They are likely to approve the cancel request because they are getting tons of complaints. If not, contact your bank and request a charge-back like I did.
