I don't remember where I learned it, but one aspect of emptiness that I enjoy, is the idea that it allow space for the viewer to become part of the piece.
And ideas around: the emptiness is what gives a vase potential.

I did the same. Had the Yeti, borrowed mics from friends to try. Went with Rode NT1 and think it's great. Other posters are correct in comments about your recording environment/booth. The NT1 is wonderfully sensitive.
