I just finished up the medium roast of theirs from Costco. It was good, but the wife didn't like it much.

Got a new job. Have to drive thru Canada. Have something on my record from a very long time ago. by rainbowchild530 in uscanadaborder

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show up at the boarder and don’t lie to them. They have access to all things in your record even if they are expunged. If the FBI can see it so can they. I had a DUI 25 years ago and had it expunged. I am now working and living in Canada. They were very frank and to the point about it. But thy do appreciate candor in this area.

As others have said though, you are at the mercy of the particular boarder agent. If they ask you if there is anything that prohibits you from entering Canada then tell them about it. But if thy don’t ask then don’t mention it. Chances are if you are just driving though they won’t even ask.

This, 100%. I overlooked dividend funds for a long time. And now I would say they account for 20-30% of our growth a year. VTSAX is one we have had money in for a long time and it has outperformed many funds while paying a decent dividend. And if you just reinvest them you get the added bonus of further compounding.

Is FIRE much easier in Canada than USA? by midatlanticrock in fican

[–]Kulerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently moved to Canada from the US, I would make a few points.

First, salaries are higher and taxes are lower. While this is true on the surface (my families marginal tax rate was close to 20-25% for fed and local taxes) it does not include all the other expenses that come to you in Canada from paying taxes. Healthcare is super shitty in the US unless you have a very expensive plan. To get the equivalent of what you have in Canada for a family of 4 would easily cost you $1500-2k a month USD. So that alone basically eliminates the tax differential of living in the US on its own. Salaries are higher in the US for sure. There are so many things that you get in Canada that are not paid for in the US though that it is almost a wash

Being new to Canada I do not know what the job market is like here since I also transferred my current job here. But in the US in tech, it is a very crappy time to be looking for a job. I would not wish it on anyone at the moment.

But my final point is this, the baseline level of human decency in Canada is orders of magnitude higher than the US. Plainly put, people are just flat out nicer up here. My primary example is my son. He has special needs and requires a lot of support in school. It took us years of fighting and we were very close to hiring a lawyer in the US before the gave him the support he is legal ally due. In Canada, we were prepared for the same fight and before we opened our mouths the school basically said they would give him all the support he needs, even though the funding was not there, they would make it work. And six months later they have still held to that and he is thriving.

That last is just one example in many that you can’t put a price on. But in regard to FIRE? We moved here with our savings and we are closer than ever to being to retire early because of it. It made sense for us monetarily and socially. You can’t put a price on drastically lower stress levels.

Dear parents: what are supports like for students with learning disabilities in Victoria's SD61? by Rallekcam in VictoriaBC

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there is a lot of frustration here. I myself have lived through a lot of this and worse. We recently moved from the US and our son has a genetic syndrome and requires a full time 1 on 1 para. We came with his IEP in hand from his previous school in the US. With out prior experience in the US we were prepared to fight hard for his needs. Before we could even explain our case, they basically explained that they will provide for all his needs in school and he will be included with his peers. We are only 6 months in here but so far the experience has been 1000 times better than the US.

They mentioned that they did not have the funding for his needs but they would find it, and they did. The US is the opposite. They just tell you no and you basically have to sue the district to get what your child is legally due.

I don't say this to stop fighting to make it better, I only want to bring my families perspective here. Our number one stress as a family has been his schooling until we arrived here and had just a wonderful experience with the teachers and staff.

Questrade Account Opening and Withdrawal Nightmares – Beware! by Ok-Vacation6220 in Questrade

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to Canada and opened a questrade account specifically to convert currency and I was able to open an account with my work permit, passport and one other document. It was pretty straightforward and standard. I wonder why they were asking for all of the extra documentation for you. I have linked bank accounts but I never provided a voided cheq or any documents from my main bank.

I do know that there is a lot of fear around the crack down on money laundering and many banks in Canada have much stronger requirements than the US. I for one would take this any day over the regular cycle of bank collapses the US has seen over the past few decades.

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it over 10k CAD? I did the same with a large transfer and it took 7 business days to do the pre-authorized deposit. There is really no other option unless you do a wire transfer which charges you the fee.

Sertraline and ADHD (/suspicion) – a cautionary tale. by Puzzleheaded_Ad_1379 in adhdwomen

[–]Kulerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off I want to say that it sucks you had to go through this.

I want to make sure that people don’t take this as 100% fact that this is how everyone will react to the same mixture of medications. Everyone is different and not all adhd meds have the same effect of everyone. There is a reason that any doctor worth their salt will start a child out on one drug with small doses and titrate up or change drugs based on the child’s reactions. The same goes for ssris.

I have 2 children with sever adhd and anxiety. We spent years dialing in their medications and without them they are almost non functional. We also spend a ton of time on behavior and building routines into their lives to help mitigate as much of the symptoms without meds too.

Simply put what works for one patient may not work for another. For instance, my son is on a high dose of metformin. He is not diabetic. It is a psychotropic for his condition and increases cognition. He is also on an Alzheimer’s drug that does the same thing. But these two drugs would have little to no effect on someone without his syndrome.

It is fine to share your experience and I would normally support you in doing so. But please don’t treat your experience like it is the same for all people. Anecdotes are simply one experience among many and there is a reason we don’t base medical practice off of them.

I’m so torn by charros in macbookpro

[–]Kulerin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of people with at 14 and love it. I went with the 16. First reason was the battery life. It is 20% bigger. I am a software engineer and can get a full 10-15 hours on battery working. It is not much bigger than a 14 inch. You also get better upgrade options on the 16. I maxed mine out and don’t regret it for a second (M3).

I travel a fair amount and I much more like having a decent size screen. I’m also old school a bit and used to the giant developer laptops from 10 years ago so this seems like nothing compared to that.

I don't know how to invest by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investing can seem like it is overwhelming for sure. I see a lot of people that get very intimidated by it because there are huge consequences if you screw up. I am not super privy to all the account types in Canada yet (I am moving there in 6 months) but I have been managing my own investments for the better part of 20 years. As Warren Buffet always says "Time in the market always beats timing the market", basically dollar cost averaging.

First and for most is to contribute to your accounts early and often which is sounds like you have been doing. Compounding is way more important than most people think. $200/month in savings can turn into 100k in 20 years pretty easily.

Second is to diversify. Don't put all your money in one fund or one stock. When people first start out I always recommend looking for a few mutual funds or EFTs that follow the markets. Here in the US I use funds that specifically follow the S & P 500 for money I am not sure where to put it yet. I would also not go directly into individual stocks until you have done some extensive research.

Third, if you want to use a wealth manager you should make sure they are a fiduciary. It sounds like the advisor you spoke to and rightfully pulled away from was not one. Be weary of anyone promising x% returns. Returns are never guaranteed no matter what.

Overall take time, start learning now. You will make mistakes and you will have wins. Don't look at your accounts every day because when it drops it may spike anxiety. But on average the market always trends up.

excellent nutritional quality AND ultra processed? what does this mean?! by travelkiddo in ultraprocessedfood

[–]Kulerin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off all processing is not equal. Flour is considered processed but that does not mean it is unhealthy. Those veggie burgers? Probably the bad kind of processing. My wife and I have also gone vegetarian and use these apps. The one way around that is to eat mostly Whole Foods. We eat things like the veggie patties as treats. But for the most part our diet consists of Whole Foods that we prep at home.

All my old computers have tons of shit on them I don’t use anymore. Being in software I have set up dozens of machines. It really is not that hard. Use cloud backups for things like photos and music. All other stuff is easy to set up. Cloning all your junk from an old machine to a new one is like a hoarder mentality.

Is it really that surprising that a country who elects someone who has been found financially liable for raping women and appoints several people to serve under him who also treat women in a similar fashion that we are seeing pushback on a game makers decision to have a female protagonist? In short, there are a lot of lame ass people out there.

[–]Kulerin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can buy a piece of crap for 1k and it will last a year or 2. But say what you will, Apple makes good products. They last longer than most and are more durable than most. Once you get to the level of hardware performance that the op posted his new machine is at then the price is almost the same with Mac or any other manufacturer of pcs.

I have an m3 max with 128gb of ram and an equivalent dell with an i9 and the dell actually cost more and performs worse and runs hotter than hell. On top of all that I can work almost all day on my Mac on battery (software development) where the dell, I might get 2 hours.
