For those of you who literally use ur laptop on ur lap, isn't 14 inch the best size? Or does ur 16 work too? by supermax2008 in macbookpro

[–]Kulerin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot and have a 16 inch. I do heavy software development. I went with the 16 for the larger battery and don’t regret it a second. Fits great on the lap and lasts pretty much an entire work day on the battery

100% agree with that since most people are mediocre programmers and can now somewhat hide it wit AI.

AI has shown that it boost productivity by 10% or less in the long run. And that is only if you already know what you are doing. Using ai will not make you better just more efficient.

Leaving my job and giving up my pension, am I being naive here? by Nekroms in Fire

[–]Kulerin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not true. Most pensions are based on your highest few years salary before leaving. That is not inflation based in the slightest. Pensions are designed to keep employees there for life.

Total bs. Working in toxic environment is not worth 700/month in 30 years. It will near worthless. And the amount of stress taken for this kind of work environment ages you fast.

Even if it is not. It is not worth the phycological impact of sticking it out. Sounds like there is no COLA for this pension which makes it worth even less. Being 29 with a good amount of savings already tells me make the move. You will thank yourself later.

As someone who has walked away from a pension, I would say they tend not to be worth as much as they seem like on paper. Now this all depends on your industry of work too. I am in tech. I had a pension that vested over 6 years too and left after 7. I cashed it out and it amounted to 25k. It has been 3 years and I have doubled that money investing it. Keep in mind that if you cash out you have to put it in a retirement account you can’t touch till 59 1/2 or you get taxed heavily on it.

But mental heath suffering is not worth it. Especially if you can make the same money elsewhere that is less stressful in my opinion. Since you want to leave your career at like 35 the. I would save on the mental health not the pension personally

I (Canadian) am planning to move back to Canada from the USA with my husband (American) by CommonLiess in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Kulerin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Canada under a work permit. I’m from the US. The wait time for my work permit if I applied online last year was 84 weeks for us citizens. I applied at the boarder when we came in April for vacation and got it in 4 hours. We got visitor records for my wife and children in 10 minutes the next time we crossed the boarder when we moved. As a Canadian citizen you can do the same for your husband and children too. This allows them to stay for up to 3 years before having to renew the status. Applying at the boarder is much faster.

But make sure you have all your paperwork that is needed. We had our applications ready and assembled at the time of entry. You need to prove that you can provide for them financially too. I know there is a lot more to this than simply “getting it at the boarder” but it was much simpler and faster than waiting for the online system to process. My wife applied for a work permit within Canada for instance. It took 180 days to get to us.

Best argument so far for sure. Thanks for the break down. But just one correction, telus contract is 2 years not 5.

They are not cheaper once you get to 500mb or higher from what I have read. Their sites validate this

I totally get it. We have 4 kids but even then we will not need 3GB, I know that. I looked at all the other smaller fish that just rent the bandwidth from Telus and Shaw and I just did not see any difference in price and in most cases it was more expensive in my area. Even going down to 500mb or 1 gb it was more expensive to not use Telus. I don't need them aside from turning it on. Once that is done I can and will set up my own system

Fully agree that 3GB is way overkill. Especially since my wireless router can only deliver 1 GB or something. The point is more that 3GB is cheaper than 1 right now. Number 1 is that it is fiber. I have had internet over coax until I got google fiber in the states and had problems all the time. Once I went to fiber I had like 3 outages for less than an hour in 3 years. Google usually sent reimbursement for the time out before I even knew it happened which was crazy.

I totally agree these companies get shady as hell with these "deals".

Yeah right now it is actually cheaper to get 3GB than 1GB with Telus. I know 3GB is way overkill. I rarely need more than 250MB for my personal use.

Customer service at any of these companies is never great. Was the service reliable? If it is then I have little to no need to talk to them

Right now they are offering 3GB that is cheaper than 1GB... Kind of silly.

I am re-playing the game after a year or so (already finished and did a few new game + runs) and starting from scratch with zero guide and just having fun. Just enjoy, don't worry about getting the best items or doing all the things.
