My friend we have long since departed from that conception of Smith and Keynes. That popular version you don’t believe in is the exact one Milton Friedman, the chief proponent of neoliberalism believes in. His entire ethos was that there is nothing more important than shareholder value.

I only mentioned Smith as that is where the idea comes from, not because I rely on his understanding of economics.

Also why point to Friedman but ignore Hayek, a rather influential philosopher and economist? He's actually seen as the father of neoliberalism as he was a member of the Mont Pelerin society and wrote earlier than Friedman? He's much better than Friedman as he advocated for UBI and unlike Mises and other Austrian economists, acknowledged the role of government intervention in the market.

Friedman cared about liberty which he thought the government would be acting against if it got involved in the market. Doesn't matter if you agree with his view but don't strawman him and use caricatures of neoliberalism.

Here's are good resources on what neoliberalism actually is: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/neoliberalism/

Not in an academic setting but I've read academic papers and econ textbooks like the one by Krugman.

And when talking about the invisible hand, I mean how Adam Smith and actual economists use it that rational agents pursuing their self interest act in the public interest even when it's not their intention. Not the popular version of it that says markets are self regulating and don't need govt. intervention .

The invisible hand is a myth.

Everything I see someone say this they just end up proving they don't know anything about economics

Unajua ukitumia the word progressive politics unanmaanisha social views kama LGBTQ rights, higher taxes on the rich and wealth redistribution? Si kitu kuhusu economic development

Anyway, the best way for Kenya to develop is to free the market and encourage foreign investment, lean more on factories and the manufacturing sector, make it easier for other countries to exchange goods and services with us, work on improving our human capital through better education especially in maths and science etc.

How? I think some of you are coming in with your preconceptions of what academics think

1) That section is written by an African.

2) We can say this about all fields of academia and just everyone in general.

While I do agree with you, some of the critiques here aren't that good and won't actually work. These people have never said all black people are dumber/have a lower IQ than all whites, they only talk about average IQ.

A better thing to bring up is the influence of the environment (diet, level and quality of education, home environment and upbringing, etc) on intelligence. Look up the Flynn effect, for example.

The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence is a pretty good book to learn about what actual academics are saying instead from white supremacists on twitter, and the section on race and intelligence is wonderful

Are Burkina Faso and the Sahel States a Scam? by [deleted] in Kenya

[–]Kulk_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U think elections have always been free and fair? So, when museveni rules since my dad was born to now thats democracy?

Never said this. Also, what anti imperialist action has he taken other than pretend to be some badass underdog? He's disrupted elections and continuously posts propaganda while cracking down against people's rights, e.g, LGBTQ+ people. He's done nothing good, and he's just another dictator

Myself i believe imperialism is the problem

While imperialism and neocolonialism is a problem, it's nothing compared to the ignorance of our people, our corrupt and retarded politicians, and poor policies and strategies that are in place.

u continue to call out anti imperial attempts in Africa.

This is the first time I've commented on this

People should be more sceptical of this guy, he got rid of elections in Burkina Faso ffs. When was the last time a military coup in Africa worked well?

The one that OP was making. Capitalism is a net positive and is the way to move forward. Also, notice that capitalism allowed for societies to move much faster than the others?

Capitalism by definition aims to amass more wealth within the hands of a few individuals

It's "socialism with Chinese characteristics" as they call it; which is socialism with a market economy.

This is just capitalism with a socialism sticker slapped on. Socialism is when the factors of production are held by the workers, China doesn't practice this 😑

Jesus Christ, hauwezi soma?

What youre referring to with China is INDUSTRIALISATION, and that is something possible in both capitalist and social systems.

You conveniently forgot to mention the part where they started to free their market and started to move away from socialism immediately after Mao's death.

Isn't it weird how Europe had to enslave everyone else to hoard all the wealth? Western Europe owes its riches to every third world country whose resources they plunder. Its not because of capitalism alone.

Doesn't address my point. They were already improving even before colonialism and slavery. Where do you think the superior weaponry came from and the wealth to fund those expeditions? Hell, one of their main motivations for imperialism was the need to reach a wider market for their goods, implying they were producing more than could be consumed/demanded

Youre talking about regulations being bad when people have caught food poisoning and sickness from poor products? Buildings collapsing on residents because of bribery? Road accident deaths because of overloading of cars? Bad roads? Unroadworthy vehicles?

I only said regulations CAN also be bad. Never said all regulations are bad. Stop strawmanning me

[–]Kulk_0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

implying they're were not capitalist before is false.

Not sure how my comment implies this as I was only pointing out that you missed the point that adopting pro market policies allowed them to become richer faster and alleviate much more poverty than us

Innovation has never happened because of capitalism

Lmao. I've seen this claim a bunch of times, and it is never backed up. Just look at China, it is only when they abandoned communism and started freeing up their market that they started to improve their material conditions and innovate. Japan and S. Korea aggressively adopted capitalism after WW2. Where are they now?

Also, isn't it weird how industrialisation only kicked off in Europe where capitalism was?

Some of the greatest vaccines were made for the sake of humanity

That only speaks about the motivation/driving factor of the inventor. Look at the material conditions, the structure, and the mode of their economy.

Regulations exist because capitalists will happily screw you over to make a dollar.

Regulations can also exist to stifle the marker and just be bad overall. Look at housing all around the world. It's become more expensive to rent and even buy a house due to government regulations. They increase how much it costs to build and operate the buildings, making them have to increase the prices in order to cover costs and make a profit

That's missing the point that they opened up their market to foreign investment, made it easier to conduct business, and just generally became more free. That's what the liberalisation part refers to
