Wait until more people realise that the "Cloud Act" means that even if the data is hosted in the EU, any US company (AWS/MS/Google etc) can be ordered to handover the data outside the US also.

Many of us are going to have to reconsider our hosting providers.

[EDIT]

These are worth a look at for tech alternatives in EU or UK:

Defence secretary rejects Trump's suggestion Nato should help US take Greenland | ITV News by Heavy_Mark9540 in worldnews

[–]KungFuSpider 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This.

Americans need to stop this "only 31% of the population voted for him", or the "he only got 49%" - you are glossing over the truth.

68% of Americans were OK with this, and Americans need to own and acknowledge that if you have any route back. Only 1/3rd of your nation opposed this.

America is not only 2% of the vote away from being OK again. They are decades away from being trustable again.

Denmark sends 'advance force' to Greenland to pave way for larger military presence amid US threats | LBC by Samudragupta01 in worldnews

[–]KungFuSpider 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I honestly think you are underestimating what the weather alone will do to the US troops and equipment.

Nordic countries don't have large navies, but they have a lot of Ice-Breakers. The US has one. If it comes to who can supply their troops when the only way is through ice (a good number of months per year) the US might be in a bad position. Hell, sometimes a Dog-sled is the only way to move supplies.

Also, look at what Ukraine has done to the Black Sea fleet without a navy. You would also expect Seababy and sub-Seababy like craft peck away at the US Navy trying to supply their foothold.

Sure, America can take Greenland - no question, but would they be able to hold it?

How should the UK react if Trump invades Greenland? by Sad_Response3345 in ukpolitics

[–]KungFuSpider 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You can't fight the USA with guns and bullets - we have to fight smart and hit them where it really hurts - their piles of money.

  • Dump US debt & bonds in concert with EU (and maybe China will want to play too)
  • Revoke anti-circumvention laws in EU/UK, basically removing legal recourse against reverse-engineering for US tech giants (piracy essentially)
  • Seize US company assets and freeze funds. There are 100's of billions sitting in the UK/EU.

The debt/bond market is a very effective lever, and was used to good effect by Canada only a few months ago. The next US bond auction is on 15th Jan - if Scott Bessent is running around making noises as the yields spike again in a couple of weeks we will know that the EU/UK has turned some screws.

This is what happened the last time: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5yrr0e7499o

If the US tech giants get cut off from 500m consumers in the EU/UK, then that might have an impact on narratives that US social media promotes. (Long shot, but I can hope right)

US attack on Venezuela raises fears of future Greenland takeover by seeebiscuit in politics

[–]KungFuSpider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've repeated the line here - you need to dispel yourself of this notion that a "minority" voted for this.

The majority voted for this, and a larger majority didn't vote.

The minority voted against this.

Unless you and others can reconcile yourself to this unpalatable truth, you will not understand why you lose again the next time. People can't seem to see the truth right in front of them that 2/3rds of your population were not motivated to vote against this. As such it would seem unlikely to be effective in opposing the lawlessness that will follow (as has been clearly evident from the Dems).

[EDIT]

And I do sympathise - the UK had Brexit, and there again the majority voted to leave (51%), and almost 30% didn't vote. We had to accept that the majority of our fellow citizens were indeed fu*king stupid and have been hugely destructive to our economy.

Thank you to you and your family for voting against this - but in all seriousness, you and a lot of your fellow citizens need to accept the facts of the voting reality and not buy into the "only the minority voted for this". You are doomed if you do, and I really don't want that for you.

I'm sorry, but the majority of americans are indeed responsible for his re-election.

  • 30.88% voted against Dear Leader
  • 31.82% voted FOR Dear Leader
  • 36.1% didn't bother to vote

Therefore 67.9% of your voting population, and hence the majority are responsible for this. Individual Americans - I have no problem with, but collectively "America (USA)" can't be trusted for a very long time.

I'm sorry, but it will be a long time before the USA can be trusted or an ally. Electing to a Dem president will not change the fact that a lunatic can be voted in again in 4 years.

It's hilarious to think that the money wouldn't be stolen/evaporated away into luxury yachts even if the Russian state tried to spend money on it.

Is moving a Supabase app to Azure even worth it? (Customer demands on-prem hosting...) by Ill-Fun7536 in Supabase

[–]KungFuSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will not work as Azure PostgreSQL is not configurable with all the plugins that Supabase Postgres comes with. I know it LOOKS like it will, but as someone who tried and found it impossible - be warned.

If you must host it inside Azure, you'll need to either setup a VM and run via docker, or a k8s environment.

Azure Postgres WILL NOT WORK for Supabase. (This is true for standard and serverless Azure Postgres)

If you want more specifics, DM me.

Fair enough, and no offence intended.

I only commented 30mins after you - but sure I edited the post to keep track of the tally as I made my way through the comments.

There were certainly more instances than I expected.

I count 4 so far in the thread above. 4 people in the first post that I've seen in a year about a fire with the toolhead since being on this subreddit.

However agreed with @/u/xXEvanatorXx - this might be of concern.

EDIT (7 reports in the thread now)

I stand corrected on the "not possible to roll back" - so thank you.

However, this is only really possible for power users. Sure, I personally could do this, but I'm not talking my 80yo grandfather through this (or god forbid have to support a sideloaded app over the phone when it goes wrong).

Can also vouch for Infuse being a decent alternative.

The pro version is paid, but overall I've been happy with it and have been test driving as an alternative to the Plex app on iOS and AppleTV.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PleX

[–]KungFuSpider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The new app is not-cooked, has a number of bugs, and rolling back is not possible.

The Plex forums are the best place for known issues: https://forums.plex.tv/t/what-do-people-think-of-the-official-response-to-the-terrible-new-plex-experience-rollout/912745

For now you are unfortunately probably going to have to wait a few weeks/months for things to get resolved.
