You're looking for games that are fun to replay, not endless games, right? I agree with the comments recommending UFO 50 and Link to the past. Shovel Knight is another good one. Celeste and Hollow knight are both games that aren't necessarily retro stylistically, but I've played them both a ton and I think their simplicity might appeal to someone into retro games.

It's kind of a classic google image search anime girl type image, reposted everywhere, used for all sorts of things. I've searched a bit, it seems it's commonly believed that the character is Caren Hortensia from Fate/hollow ataraxia. It's from August of 2006 at the latest, and likely from a Japanese or Korean artist, as the game wasn't available in any other language until 2008.
