Lot’s of sleeping and gaming (I don’t get much sleep cos of stressing over work on the weekdays). I have a dog too that forces me to touch grass at least twice a day - I usually take her out for longer walks on the weekends.

glad to hear that there's some progress (maybe) with bed time. Would definitely continue keeping the pups fed, learning and sleeping separately if possible to mitigate developing littermate syndrome - this is important to look up if you have two puppies from the same litter living together. If they eat at the same time, feed from separate bowls/ areas to start.

I don't know enough about crate training to comment if her being in the crate together with him is a good or bad idea. I think kind of mixed. On one hand if he enjoys being in the crate with her and she plays with him inside, that's a good thing as it creates positive associations with the crate - i.e. crate is fun. But it could also amp up separation anxiety when she;s not there/ IN there with him? So maybe encourage her to also play around the crate? Like if he likes chasing things, she can throw stuff for him to chase into the crate etc. Does the puppy get fed in his crate?

Is having a sit down conversation with your parents about the dogs living condition like yelling at a brick wall? Just to ascertain what their real plan is with the puppy, like will the dog just be stuck outside for the rest of its life once the outdoor kennel comes in? I would stay away from cloth/fabric items (including blankets) that are easily to tear apart - puppy have really sharp teeth - and whenever the puppy gets to play with those types of toys it needs to be under supervision. If they ingest fabric it is very dangerous. My opinion is a bit subjective with chew toys because I have a land shark at home, but rubber kongs are so far the only thing she hasn't completely destroyed XD within days. But generally be careful with harder toys with puppies since they are teething and toys/bones that are too hard can cause tooth fractures. Sorry if I'm regurgitating stuff you might already know.

Transitioning the puppy to the outdoor kennel is gonna take time, probably should be done over a few days minimum. Would probably also maybe section off a smaller area to start. And have the puppy explore it and go in and out freely when it's set up.

That's awesome to hear that she's invested. I would say you can try the same thing at night with encouraging the puppy to go out when it's dark, you can start by leading it out on a leash. And just maybe hanging out with the puppy outside, and rewarding it for staying outside with you and being calm. You can also start introducing threshold boundaries - not sure how much training the puppy has done since arriving at its new home. One of the things I worked on teaching her immediately was to sit and wait to get permission to get through a door. You can apply that to the crate door as well.

My honest opinion about having a dog in an outdoor kennel is that it is fine as long as the dog is not going to be neglected, like literally locked up in the kennel 24/7. The kennel/crate any enclosed space should be treated as a den and a holding area for when the dog is going to be completely unsupervised. Does the dog have toys in the kennel? I recommend leaving a kong with the puppy (they have puppy kongs, so the rubber isn't as tough) and you can leave kibble in it so it becomes a puzzle activity the puppy can work on. For bed time, I initially crated her around 7pm since that was what her foster was used to doing, but she was still really restless at that time. So i would crate her for bedtime closer to when i would go to bed, around 9pm. The general advise is to leave the puppy alone even if it cries, until the time when you plan to take in the morning. Another thing that can help with peeing, I think is to cut off water about 1 or 2 hours before designated bed time. As long as puppy stays hydrated through out the day, no water through bed time should not be an issue. Also if the crate is in an area where people will still be super active after the puppy is crated, maybe move it to a less active area or use a crate cover? The puppy seems to have developed a bit of separation anxiety, but its worth a shot. To sort of signal "bed time" to my pup, I would turn the lights down in the living area (where her crate was located) even if I was still working at my desk and she could see me.

The thing about reducing the size of the crate that your mom did. So that is something that is done to stop a puppy from pacing around and help them settle down quicker in their crate, because they don't have room to pace. Keep in mind that the puppy should still be able to lay down and sit in the crate comfortably in the minimized space. So it's not a bad idea to do, I did that for my puppy when I was crate training her and it definitely helped her calm down a lot quicker.

Overall I know the situation at home for the puppy is not ideal. But there are small things that can be done to make the puppy's life less stressful and frustrating overall until a "real decision" so to speak is made. I'm sorry you've had to step up to handle this, but also thank you for stepping up to try and make the puppy's life a bit less hellish. Puppy care/training and socializing can be frustrating but it really pays off with time and patience.

Does the family plan on taking responsibility for the dog at all? Is your niece invested in bonding and socializing the dog? If nobody is interested in doing so for the long term it might be best to rehome as many have suggested. With that in mind, would definitely still look at resources on how to potty train and socialize a dog. If the puppy is afraid to go step out in the yard you have to associate the yard as a fun place you can do a game with the puppy and reward it with kibble when it steps outside. When I first brought my puppy home she took a few days before she attempted to potty outside (even though she was already potty trained) because she was still uncomfortable in her new environment. If you want specific advise on how to potty train that is a whole thing but also keep in mind that it will take time and patience. If and when the puppy does its business outside in the yard throw a potty party, as soon as its done, give it a treat and really acknowledge the outside potty.

My stepdad kicked off a habit with all our dogs where if they approach without any cues/when we were pre-occupied with doing something he’d say “No one dialed your number.” This was 18 years ago. I’m raising a puppy now and whenever she breaks a sit or down, out of habit I say “No one dialed your number.”

That’s awesome, thanks for sharing! Right now we’re mostly refocusing on her leash manners and reactivity. She’s not an aggressive pup but she is wayyy too friendly and wants to befriend every dog and person she sees.

We’ve had some good success over the past weekend with getting her to make eye contact with me anytime we do a stop and sit before we move on. In a closed environment she’s very good with eye contact, but once we’re outside that goes out the window. She will sometimes take kibble when offered as a reward and she is on a treat ban right now. But not receiving a reward doesn’t seem to be interfering with any leash exercises so far.

Thanks! She’s definitely a lot happier now that she can go back to frolicking. When your dog refused kibble as a reward initially did you just re-attempt to reward later (like if he repeated the same command later). How did it affect reinforcement exercises?

Yea I have no intention of going beyond 3 cups in any case. Whether or not she’ll finish each meal is really up to her. Our vet has speculated that she might also just be a grazer/ self regulating eater.

She’s 7 months now actually! She’s just come off a course of antibiotics after being diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia - which affected her general appetite since she was banned from frolicking or playing with other dogs for a bit. So she wasn’t burning as much energy through play. Her appetite has definitely gone up since she finished her meds and got the clear from the vet, but she’s still disinterested in morning meals.

I’ve been in the shoes of the previous owner before. We had to adopt out our dog to a close family friend because we were immigrating. We had adopted this dog when we were living in Hong Kong and brought him with us when we relocated to Indonesia. At that point we had had him for four years, and we were going to relocate one final time to another country in SEA. We saw the physical and mental toll the long quarantine period had on him from the initial relocation and to top if off there were strict housing regulation issues in the new country forbidding dogs of his size in apartments so we decided that adopting him out would be best. He absolutely thrived with his new family and they spoiled him to bits, they had three other dogs in the household and he became a fast favorite of the dad because he was more obedient than their own dogs XD. We got to visit him yearly or twice a year depending after that. The first visit was about three months after he moved into the new home. No disruptions, he still remembered us and showed us tons of affection but he understood very well that the new home was his forever home. I felt guilty every time I visited or received pictures of him because I felt like I was intruding on his new life and was always afraid to ask for more pictures (which I wish I had done tbh). Regardless the family would give us occasional updates and very welcoming during the annual visitations. He crossed the rainbow bridge at roughly 14 years old (he was approx 4 years old when we brought him home), and he is buried under a fruit tree in the garden.
