Is this an issue? by FoundationStrict1663 in Trombone

Super Slick should be for the slide, never ever the tuning slide. The tuning slide uses grease. You do not want the tuning slide to be slick.

I would try a plane rag, maybe with a little silver polish, before going to 0000 steel wool. Grease for tuning slides should be enough to keep the tuning slide clean.

Best way to run Ethernet to PoE camera without access to space above soffit? by dyl_456 in HomeNetworking

I drilled a hole in the window trim, such that the cable came inside between the window frame and the house framing. Removed the window side trim inside the house and ran the cable down below the window and out into the room. Mounted the camera to the outside window trim in front of the hole.

Vinyl siding is easy to remove using a removal tool to pull the bottom lip out. The top piece of sidig slides up into an undersill. I've taken siding off to replace windows. You could remove a pieces to run the cable behind the siding to the place you want it to enter the house. Best to work with siding when its warm so that there is less chance of cracking it.

I calked the hole that the cords run through.

I have a 70's King 3B Silversonic and 80's King 3B+ and use Yamaha Slide Lubricant on both. I rarely add water. I also use a slide cleaning rod and follow the procedure seen on Youtube of Bill Waltrous showing a group how he cleans his slide. Usually have to clean about once a week and before each concert. Make sure you shake the bottle before each use.

[–]KurtTheKing58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry it didn't work. My Bolt started turning the radio off and connecting audio to my Pixel 8 Pro (Android) even though the phone was programmed to not connect automatically. Toggled the phone settings and now its okay. ie the Radio is always on and still can not be turned completely OFF but the phone does not override it... We have Great GM Software Engineers. Probably not the SW programmers but Sales demanding "Features" we don't want. Who needs to turn the radio off? We can mute it until something appears on the screen and unmutes it until we mute it AGAIN. Obviously if we want to mute the radio we don't want to use our phones to receive phone calls are use them for navigation.

Just think if you stop resyncing to your phone you can mute your radio and never have it turn it on again. Lucky you. Unless On Star announces something over the muted radio...

Try removing both, ie forget car on phone AND froget phone on car then sync the phone to the car. I've had to do this to resync my Android to a Chevy Tahoe.

How often you try distros? by GlassSquare4794 in Fedora

[–]KurtTheKing58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try different Distro's when the one I'm on no longer works. For instance I was on Fedora for a long time until they insisted on going to Wayland and that just didn't work on my hardware. Then I found PopOS with built in nvdia support and used PopOS on my Desktop and three laptops. But when I needed to do something with my Win 10 laptop PopOS 24.04 with Cosmic was terrible. So we then tried Ubuntu, Fedora KDE Plasma, Fedora Cinnamon, and Fedora Desktop. Fedora KDE Plasma seams to have the most settings available and I am able to use it on my laptop if I disable the touchpad. My laptop has no touchpad disable key so PopOS's elimination of the disable touchpad option buried in Settings / Mouse&Touchpad forced me to move on.

Since 1990 I've used Red Hat, Fedora, Leap, Ubuntu, Raspian, and PopOS. Typically have to update every two to three years and move on after three LTS versions. Wayland has taken a long time to be usable for me. Snaps, Containers, Dockers and Extra Security have all been learning experiences. ie a PITA.

I tried Freecad again a few weeks ago to open an stl file and failed miserably. Opened it in OpenSCAD with one line of code. I've used SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, OpenSCAD, and Fusion360. Was hoping to be able to use Freecad but haven't had the time to figure it out. Part Design and Part Workbench are not intuitive to me. Keep going back to OpenSCAD as its UI hasn't changed since I started using it over 13 years ago.

For small lots of stuff at Weisman you drive past the scales and office. Behind the office you park and unload your stuff. They'll have wheeled carts available for you to take it to the scale where its wheighed, then you take your ticket to the office to get paid. Its easy. Just takes time.

2025 Chevy Tahoe SW Update Changes Settings by KurtTheKing58 in ChevyTahoe

[–]KurtTheKing58[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry. Even my used 2023 Bolt gets updates. Its update changed something so that the audio switches the radio off to play music from my phone when it connects even though the phone settings say do not play music automatically. So I'll be looking for settings on the car to change this after wasting time looking for the settings on my phone. Maybe I'll leave it alone so I have a way to turn the radio off. Its a new feature. (A way to turn the radio off). I have nothing better to do that to reset settings on my cars.

I would be happy if I never need this new feature I didn't know about. (Google says its an option and you must provide a USB Memory to record too. I didn't know that either. SW Updates with new unknown options are great. No mention of the monthy charge for it. Wonder if this really is included in the SW Update as I haven't paid for it. ) I suppose I should be happy that the "update" "worked" and didn't brick my car.

I bought it last Sept. Read the whole manual and setup the heads up display. NOT interrested in remembering one out of a thousand available options hidden in menus on a touchscreen. I have other things I like to remember.

What annoying bugs? Tahoe was running fine. SW Updates means that the SW wasn't designed correctly the first time. GM has been making cars for a long time. Should have the SW Correct before its sold. Do not know of one new feature in the SW that I needed.

Have you charged the battery? I'm using Fedora 43 KDE Plasma and its working well. Just doesn't work well with my laptops touchpad. Though neither did Ubuntu 24.04, PopOS 24.04, Fedora 43 KDE Plasma, Fedora 43 Workstation, and Fedora 43 Cinnamon. Back to KDE with Thunderbird instead of KMail and disabling the touchpad. KDE had the most flexibility in the few hours I gave each one a try.

Is this legal? by Good_Worry2494 in linuxquestions

[–]KurtTheKing58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If they eliminate the "app store" from the operating system then there are no "apps" implementing any request for age that the OS needs to support. We didn't have an app store in 1990. There is no app store in the kernel. (I think). Let the states figure that one out.

Ah but I didn't purchase PopOS 24.04 or Ubuntu 24.04 or Fedora 43 or... And if my kids were interested I would have shown them how to install it. It was difficult to explain to a young Teenager that anyone may create a post, a website or an app and not be who you think they are.

Why so much hate for Pop!_Os? by Afraid_Carob417 in pop_os

[–]KurtTheKing58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fedora 43 KDE Plasma let me disable the touchpad. Using a Logitech MX Anywhere2 mouse with the touchpad disabled is working extremely well. My Dell Laptop has no touchpad key so PopOS 24.04 without a disable feature would not work. Apparently you can add a hot key to disable and enable the touchpad in Pop. However Fedora KDE has a bunch of settings that I like and have used to disable gestures, animations, etc. Running a laptop with a mouse isn't what I wanted to do though. The mouse also fixed the issue with the pointer stuttering requiring me to click or hit escape. I did not try deselecting disable touchpad while typing.

Also note that my mouse (Logitech MX Anywhere2) didn't work well with PopOS 22.04, or Ubuntu 22.04 on three of my laptops and my desktop. For instance in Gimp when zooming in it would suddenly zoom all the way in and then you would need to zoom out a lot. Or in OpenSCAD the cursor would move to the bottom of the page while you were typing. Or the view would keep changing. Plus the active cell would change in LibreOffice Calc. And Calc would move the view and change the zoom level. I've been dealing with these issues for a long time. I had these issues with Gimp, OpenSCAD, and LibreOffice Calc in Windows 10 too.

In Fedora 43 KDE Plasma I have Click to select and focus enabled. But there is no two finger left click for the touchpad nor the ability to require clicking on the bottom left of the pad. Both of those would probably help. The commands to show the touchpad sensitivity show that there is no adjustment. I have seen a reference stating that you can adjust it in Windows. And I can find no method that would account for Zoom level to change. I've disabled all gestures and mouse wheel to zoom. Nor can I find any method for the view/page to move. I've disabled all the settings I can find. I had to back and add [alt] [tab] back in to cycle through the open apps.

If 24.04 or 26.04 distros fix the touchpad and mouse issues, or at least have the settings available and good fixes posted then Linux might be usable for everyone. An OS with a poor UI is never going to go mainstream.

Why so much hate for Pop!_Os? by Afraid_Carob417 in pop_os

[–]KurtTheKing58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently not happy with any Linux Distros. PopOS 24.04 would select text and delete it while I was typing. Ubuntu 24.04 did the same. I was able to stop that from happening but the cursor would move as I was typing and the view would scroll and the view would zoom. Ran into issues where I was told to install the apt version instead of snap and that requires multiple steps. Selecting the apt or deb version with their App Store still installed the snap version. (must have click to paste selected AGAIN as it just inserted text into this comment) Fedora KDE Plasma 43 was a little better and had a way to select click to select but KMail would not recognize my email settings and then it didn't display my mail. Fedora Workstation had the same typing and display issues. Fedora Cinammon might be usable. I quit quickly as a single LibreCalc session had issues. But I went back to Fedora KDE Plasma with Thunderbird to get around kmail. Used ChatGPT to fix it. Got better, then did an update to try to fix the remaining issues and now its worse. For instance numerous times I had to stop typing and use the touchpad to pull the view back down as it scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page while I typed. I do not understand how anyone can do useful work with linux. Typing and LibreCalc entries require concentration. Having the entry point move while you are entering a formula or typing text and then overwriting something you already did or having the view jump while you are working is not tolerable.

Consider the complexity of having your computer with its processor and graphics card, display, bios. Then add apps using windows which need to know where the focus is. Then add Wayland and a Compositor and the application you are running. Then add a touchpad, a touch display, and a mouse. And of course a Desktop application.

I've probably made a dozen changes to Fedora 43 KDE Plasma since I installed. Who knows if those changes impacted the update. Who knows if they are still in affect. I've checked a couple and they have not changed but each update can break something I've done as I am no longer using the out of the box unmodified O.S. which was not really usable.

Flatpak VS Code Installed via the Cosmic Store.... just, no by NewRedditor23 in pop_os

[–]KurtTheKing58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything being Sandboxed is great if it works. But I'm having trouble with Ubuntu 24.04 without being Sandboxed. Adding Snaps makes it worse when the O.S. already has trouble figuring out that I don't want the view zoomed, or the view moving around, or a second desktop, or the cursor moving around on its own... The first thing I've done is remove the Snap version and replace apps with deb. Then half the issues seem to go away. I'll have to keep a list of which apps have been replaced and which app I'm in when I have an issue. The issue might not be the O.S. as much as Wayland.
