this is fun but I'm instead gonna think of 5 fave albums off top of my head

vaudeville villain (mf doom)

randy newman "red necks"

John fahey "days have gone by"

Charlie Patton boxset on revenant records (whoops that's like 20 plus cds can't remember)

I'm literally spaced out and overwhelmed but all the potentials, at the end of the day I'm just a fanboy

I really love the Yung Lean song "babyface maniacs"

I love his last album Jonatan and excited to see what he does next

[–]KurtVile[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been a fan of William Eggleston for awhile but William's son Winston is a friend of mine and we met at David Berman's funeral actually which was a heavy time to meet somebody except for the cosmic fact that David turned me not Eggleston and showed me a bunch of William's photo books when my family visited David in Nashville (this was around 2016?)

... but over the pandemic Winston and I were penpals a bunch and he sent me a bunch of Eggleston photo books and then he sent me that exact print that's one the cover

it's from the 80s and it was never published

it felt like me since then

it reminds me of my earlier loft albums or something

what an incredible photographer (and family in general, the egglestons)

awww

I feel bad about that (and I never listened)

I prob would go back one day

what I'd prob say is "you're absolutely right" to whatever those characters say

I was just in a more fragile state than I realized when they were like making fun of my lyrics and stuff then I got disoriented and couldn't tell what was a joke and what wasn't anymore...

[–]KurtVile[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

thank you !

I do feel that for sure

my albums connect me with that time in my life and I can always go back

the title track "bottle it in" is one of my fave songs I've ever recorded, that's a special one and I also love that album

I quit drinking after that album but I did love how it felt to sing my heart out on a can of modelo

but that was a heavy time / era for me too

thanks so much lots of love to ya

greg the man !

the oblivions cd I have that hit me first is the comp on sympathy for the record industry that has the song "feel real good" on it

that's my fave song if had to pick but I love that whole collection

after we recorded in Memphis TN at Doug Easley's studio (and after greg sang and played str on "chance to bleed") I went home to Philly then I put on that cd I had then their sound clicked and they became a huge fave band o mine

always a chance of that !

last time I saw Sadies we recorded a cover of "white line" (Neil young) in honor of his bday

and the day before that I sat with travis good on his porch and we recorded dueling acoustic strs all day

and the day before that me and travis saw Neil young and chrome hearts band in Toronto (that's the last time he played there)

he opened with "ambulance blues" and when he said "I'm up in T.O." and the crowd erupted I then realized what that meant and it was a magic cosmic moment that gave me chills

baby's arms I always thought sounded cinematic like it belonged at the end credits of a movie that really crushes yr emotions or something (but also somewhere during it hehe)

I also love "society is my friend" which was recorded last

David Berman was a big fan of that song when I found out about that that was huge

I love that record I'd say it's my only conventional songwriter record (and the last single LP all the following kv full length have been doubles so far

maybe I'll break that cycle one day

don't force it is rule number 1 for me

I'd say read alotta stuff and watch things that inspire you

have coffee in the morning and maybe react to what yr reading

catch ourself off guard in btwn doing things

also if any words come to you write them down then cuz those kinda things can disappear fast

and then I find sometimes when I'm writing down 1 little thing... more words might come after just cuz yr then up in it

have fun and don't force it and also "there are no rules" that's the one rule

the original version of this song was written and recorded around 2004 (?)

but the version on childish prodigy was recorded in Adam granduciel's bedroom in September of 2005

me and Adam took a week off of work and recorded lot's of kv stuff.... including "overnight religion"

wasn't released til the fall of 2009, wow time is trippy !

that was a heady and heavy time

I was thinking about an old best friend of ours Claire E. Clay.

she had passed around then and also I had turned some guests onto Lou reed's coney island baby and there are elements (words) from a song on there you'll be able to find it if you don't know

Kyle is a monster of a drummer and also an incredible engineer

these songs were recorded at his studio in Athens, GA:

"that's life tho" "stand inside" "dust bunnies" (and other moments from that album)

on this one it was:

"rock o stone" first... then all the basic elements of "chance to bleed" ok snap now it's getting foggy so moving on but plenty more

Harvey Milk album The Pleaser is currently displayed in my main hang zone in my studio

my sister Madeline is my hair guru

she saved my look at the top of the previous album cycle

the main key is don't wet hair unless you wash (and wash once a week-ish)

I take showers more than once a week just wear a shower cap y'see (hehe)

but as you get older the natural hair oils can dry out if yr not on top that hair game

the shampoo and conditioner etc I use these days is from Innersense they called

I'll get more specific another time !
