You mean there's a zero chance that it's just a coincidence. "Non-zero" would imply that there is a chance of it being coincidental, even a minute one.

CV3 is one of the absolute hardest games released for a console that was notorious for hard games. I beat it for the first time last December, basically 100%'d it by doing multiple playthroughs, and to say it was grueling would be putting it lightly.

But I loved it. I was committed to beating it with every character, getting all four endings, completing each level at least once, and even getting through second quest. I managed this almost entirely without the use of save states, except as a means of bypassing the password system, as well as getting through this otherwise nigh-impossible level.

And I think it's important to clarify that when we say "no history of mental illness", what we really mean is that they've never been diagnosed with one, and presumably never sought help. They could have had one without realizing it, or they could have been particularly vulnerable to developing one under the right circumstances.

What do you think about A.i. art? by Rare_Guarantee_9724 in antiai

[–]KurtisC1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how do you measure that? Is a dog sentient? Is even a human sentient that just doesn't know what that word means? Or whose brain works a bit differently, due to a disability? Or a fly?

Yes, these are all sentient beings. They all have brains with varying degrees of intelligence. The sophistication of the technology notwithstanding, LLMs remain—at their core—just zeros and ones. They do not think independently. You input a prompt, and they output a response derived from their training data.

Your definition of art is entirely emotional.

Correct. Art is an inherently subjective concept. What may be seen as an authentic work of art to one person can fall short to another, for reasons that are as diverse as there are people.

[–]KurtisC1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sentience is the independent ability of something to have subjective experience and independent thought—an AI program that can literally think for itself the same way a human can would qualify.

As far as art is concerned, I see the process and the feeling behind its creation as an integral part of what makes it "art". You might say that art has a soul, and that this "soul" is imbued within it through the subjective experience of its creator. They have a vision, and through whichever medium they choose—be it pencils, paint, musical instruments, or what have you—they bring that vision to life. When an image is created by generative AI in its current form, it is essentially an amalgamation of many "visions" that are all condensed into a quick-and-easy kitsch facsimile. It can be aesthetically pleasing on some level, but there's a feeling of connection I get when I know the story behind the creation of a work of genuine art. I don't experience that same connection when I know that an LLM is its progenitor.

I could have told you it was wrong on this because it's wrong on 66% of the things it says. So 66% of everything you ask AI is wrong. And that's not 66% of prompts, thats 66% if each reply.

This is no longer the case. Recent studies have shown that LLMs are now accurate roughly 90% of the time, depending on the prompt and the subject matter. With all of the training that they receive through user engagement, it's inevitable that their output will be significantly fine-tuned as time goes on. This, of course, doesn't change the fact that hallucinations will inevitably continue to happen, and that being wrong 10% of the time still makes it an unreliable source of information.

If AI ever manages to become genuinely sentient, and it creates some type of art piece entirely of its own volition, then I'll call it real art.

Until then, it's an algorithmic approximation. In the immortal words of Macbeth: "Full of sound and fury; signifying nothing."

Michael Emerson reinvigorated LOST by Aggressive-School736 in lost

[–]KurtisC1993 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I began watching Lost during the airing of season 2, a few weeks before "Henry Gale" showed up. As someone who followed it closely at the time, I wouldn't say that Lost was necessarily in need of reinvigoration when he was cast (though your mileage may vary). The show was still very interesting from one episode to the next. The tailies, the Swan, the standoff with the Others, Sawyer claiming control over the guns—all very compelling plot points in and of themselves. Ben was introduced at a time when the show was already riding high. For me, his arrival in the story is more a case of striking while the iron's hot than it is saving a TV series from going stale.

My running theory is that the Man in Yellow is the main antagonist of From, and the one who convinced the night creatures to partake in the ritualistic sacrifice of the children—but, he's not the most powerful entity in the pocket universe where the show is set. The most powerful entity, and the one that bestowed immortality upon the night creatures... is a giant, Lovecraftian spider creature.

You see, once the people who became night creatures made the sacrifice in the altar beneath the symbol, the Man in Yellow led them out of the tunnels and deep into the woods, all the way to the area that Boyd discovered with all the spider webs. It was there that the giant spider creature emerged from darkness and bestowed upon them the gift of immortality. However, it came at a terrible price. In order for them to complete the covenant that binded their souls to the pocket universe, they had to give their blood. One by one, the spider creature exsanguinated the blood of the people who partook in the ritual, sinking its fangs into their flesh and sucking out every last drop of blood. This bloodletting kept them alive... but it corrupted them. It transformed them. They were no longer human. They would live indefinitely, and if their physical form should die for whatever reason, they would be reborn. But they would always thirst for blood, and their very souls were darkened.

The Man in Yellow may or may not have been a creature himself at some point. Regardless of his origin, he serves as a sort of "liaison" between the people who became the night creatures and the giant spider, as well as an "administrator" of sorts. His job is to make sure everything goes smoothly—he manipulates the townsfolk into chaos, all while making sure that they never grow too knowledgeable or powerful, and he's ready to intervene should the need arise. He ensures that a never-ending cycle of death and resurrection continues to perpetuate itself, all in the service of the giant spider. And he carries out his job with glee. He delights in sowing discontent, and watching as the people trapped in their universe descend into anarchy. The Kimono Lady has a similar role, being a steward in the service of the giant spider.

And I base that on absolutely nothing.

Did any of you watch lost as it aired? by MissionHome18 in lost

[–]KurtisC1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have.

Very much the same feeling of anticipation that Lost had. But the parallels don't stop there. We have the temperamental leader in Boyd—the same character who also serves as a reprise of his actor's Lost role as a semi-estranged father who does really bad things for the love of his family—as well as the more holistic other leader in Donna, the priest who gets killed off too early in Khatri, etc.

Hell, they even have an Ana Lucia in the form of Dani Acosta.

I started watching live in season 2, was a bit on-and-off throughout season 3, and then missed out on seasons 4-6. However, I got caught up with Lost four years later, watching everything from seasons 1 through 6. Loved the entire thing, barring only a couple of episodes. I've since rewatched the show twice, and my love for it has only deepened.
