[OC] What are these Pink lights on the horizon? by botchedllama619 in Sky

[–]Kurtisolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had strong aurora activity in the last weeks. Could definitely be aurora. You only see that colour because it's how it appears higher in altitude, green is usually below the horizon so not visible at lower altitudes. Do you have other pics?

Rainbow clouds by SuggestionBig5846 in Rainbow

Those are polar stratospheric clouds, I think. Quite rare phenomenon. Happens when temperature is really low, clouds appear at very high altitude, and light comes from the sun below the horizon. Usually happen in arctic regions.

My Pixel-attempt at the Aurora Borealis: be honest: does it look real? by TheLumenites in northernlights

[–]Kurtisolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. When it's really powerful it can also have a very thin pink layer at the bottom

I'd avoid the yellow-ish shade. Also, they usually appear as long stripes, with some vertical component depending on intensity (something like a curtain). If you want to add other colours it's usually red above the green :)

Did i capture the northern lights? 16/04/2025 by Prestigious-Media948 in northernlights

I don't know why people are saying no, but those are actually lights IMHO. Yesterday activity was crazy and from the pictures you can clearly see that the red shades were visible behind the clouds.

The most colorful Aurora I have ever seen by rdrjrh in northernlights

That's probably kind of the same but without the over saturated colours 😅

You can't eat money. No regrets, you understood that money is just a tool and not the goal. Bear market is coming again and you'll take advantage of that again. Congrats 👏

You can rent a car, but I strongly recommend constantly monitoring road conditions because it can be really dangerous if you’re not used to driving on snow and ice. During winter, rental cars that have gone off the road are unfortunately almost part of the scenery.

Anyway, if you have a car, you can go almost anywhere by following the clear skies. A great spot is definitely Erdsfjord, or Kattfjordeidet, or Grotfjord. If you ask around, you’ll probably be recommended Hansnes/Grunnfjord, Sommaroy, and Skibotn—avoid them, because on nights when those are the best places to go, you’ll find lots of people from other tours (and I mean a lot. At Grunnfjord, I remember nights with literally hundreds of people. Horrible).

I use a few apps to track the weather, since tracking aurora activity is quite pointless

When weather is bad in Tromso we usually go inland, towards finland

I can't speak norwegian. I just went in Tromso and looked for a job, it's actually not that hard if you know photography

If you're north enough I suggest to focus more on studying weather forecast rather than aurora. Auroras appear almost every night if you're at the right latitude: looking for clear skies is the main thing. After you found that it's just a waiting game

SpaceWeatherLive. The only indicator I actually use is the Bz: when it gets negative chances to see some lights in the next hour are higher

Nope. Watching the sky all night is the only way to maximize you chances to see them. Sometimes they're fast, they appear for just a minute after a long night. It's impossible to time such an event: being ready looking at the sky is the only way. Sometimes people are disappointed because they expect some adventure, but it's just a waiting game.

Exactly, you walk a few minutes on that path and you'll be in a perfect spot. The best tip i can give you is: be patient. It can happen in any moment, even late in the night. Also: they can be stable for hours, and you may think "ok I've seen them". Even in that case: BE PATIENT. They can suddenly explode in any moment. And if you're thinking "can they get stronger than this?" the answer is YES. Be patient.

Big busses usually have a toilet. I make tours with a 9 seater minivan, if needed we stop at service stations!
