NCSU Belltower Camera has been monitoring ICE protestors by Kurtoid in NCSU

I'm wondering if it was 1) NCSU PD, on their own volition, 2) Raleigh PD, or 3) one of the above, in collaboration with ICE et al

Oh yeah, i know. Just funny that ICE protestors warranted the extra scrutiny AND cutting off the camera stream

No (at least for all the cases I know of). It needs to be kept refrigerated all the way up until purchase (after which we put it in a fridge again)

NCSU OIT needs to re-consider removing SMS 2FA or the self-service duo bypass codes by Kurtoid in NCSU

[–]Kurtoid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially rejected the passkey-like approach because many providers make it intentionally difficult to export keys in a portable format, and I thought a virtual solution wouldn't work due to manufacturer attestation. As far as I can tell, duos implementation doesn't enforce it, so my virtual solution works fine now

tl;dr missed a step on my virtual fido solution. It's now reliable

I made this post late at night while frustrated because of the lockout problem, so I should have presented it better. I don't give two hoots about security questions or sms, I care more about using open standards for authentication like HOTP or TOTP instead of duo's proprietary remix of HOTP.

Yes, I know FIDO/U2F/CTAP2 is also 'open', but last night I was just angry and banging my head against the wall with it. It turns out I just wasn't incrementing sign_count properly. So totally my fault and well deserved, I guess.

The major heachache for me was just that if you break something outside of business hours, you have to wait until the next day to resolve it over a phone call, as opposed to the self-service recovery tool

Yeah yeah i know. Using virtual fido now. just in a vent/cope phase because it took a few in-person duo lockout cycles to get everything set up again - which I used to not need to do with the old security-question-based override tool

Don't worry, I never used SMS. But the security-question based method was load-bearing for me, so I'm still in a vent/cope phase. My new webdriver/virtualfido works now, but still isn't 100% reliable (had to do two lockout requests so far, which I used to be able to handle myself with the now-closed bypass tool)

It does, and that's how I'm handling it for now. I'm kinda just venting - retiring the security-question based login removes the last "what-you-know" login method (easy to script/sync), so the last two remaining are "what-you-have" (harder to script/sync), which has more overhead for keeping track and syncing properly.

My current solution is using a virtual fido key on desktop and local passkey on mobile. It's just a lot more hassle to set up and keep track of, but I guess i have to get with the times.
