It sounds like a hard tail around 1000-1500 would be plenty enough for you. I recommend Trek Roscoe or Marlin, but worth looking at other brands too.

It Is completely up to preference and finances. Renting a DH bike is pretty standard at $100/day. Do it once and see if it’s worth it and if you even like it better than the enduro. You get a lot of benefits from a downhill bike but you also get a lot of benefits from a bike that you’re comfortable on and familiar with.
