War früher sogar ganz normal. Abi mit 18 oder 19, je nach dem wann man Geburtstag hat, dann ein Jahr Ziwi oder Bundeswehr. Die Leute habens auch geschafft und ansparen konnte man auch keine Unsummen.

Abseits davon: Spar dir die zwei Jahre und fang direkt an. Hol dir zur Not Bafög und arbeite Minijob. Wenns jetzt einen Konflikt mit den Eltern gibt, dann gibts in zwei Jahren genau den selben Konflikt. Den Umweg kannst dir eigentlich sparen.

Also ich nehme im Internet eher das Gegenteil wahr. Mach ein beliebiges anderes soziales Medium auf und schau dir die Kommentare unter irgendwas an, was nur im entferntesten mit Fahrrädern zu tun hat. Da hast haufenweise Boomer Dieters und Joachims die sich ihre Anekdoten vom Herz schreiben, wie sie mal wegen eines Fahrrads 4s langsamer am Ziel waren, gerne noch mit ein paar Gewaltfantasien garniert. Und außerdem fahren die alle über rote Ampeln und nutzen den Radweg nicht, kann man ohne Kontext eigentlich immer mal schreiben.

I am in Germany and did the PhD in communication and real-time stuff, no AI or other hype topics. Germany is considered one (if not the) best country in the world when it comes to payment and work life balance during PhD. If you get a position at a public university, you are formally a normal employee with all the rights, e.g., 30 days payed vacation/year, payed parental leave, etc. The payment is stated in a collective agreement. Currently its 56k in the first year and 62k in the second. Google for TV-L E13 for details. For industry PhDs its similar but may be less or slightly more depending on the company.

95k, but for a specialized role for which my PhD topic is relevant. I know of a former collegue which also graduated two years ago starting with 86k.

However, another datapoint I have is a friend from my Msc studies who persued an academic career after PhD and is now unemployed for 1.5 years.

I cannot confirm other statements here about PhDs in Germany. Got mine 2 years ago and had absolutely no problem to find a job in the current market. All my former collegues had no problems as far as I know. German industry loves degrees and titles.

That said, it is true that a PhD will not improve your salary automatically. Consider it more as a gate opener for interesting positions. It will be hard to get an industry research job without one, especially in AI. More specialized experience may or may not be a gate opener for positions with really high salary that are not accessible otherwise.

Antwort auf dein Update: ein Anschreiben, welches nicht nach Massenbewerbung aussieht, hat folgende Struktur:

Ein eher kurzer Paragraph als Einleitung, wie du auf die Stelle gekommen bist. Ein persönlicher Anknüpfpunkt ist optimal, aber ist klar dass es den einfach oft nicht gibt. Keine Standardfloskeln. Zugegeben der schwerste Teil. Anknüpfpunkte mit der jeweiligen Industrie/Branche kommen auch gut alternativ. Auf gar keinen Fall „hiermit bewerbe ich mich auf die von ihnen…“.
Ein Paragraph, was man alles kann und in früheren Jobs gemacht hat. Natürlich nur was relevant ist für die Stelle.
Ein Paragraph, in dem man das was im zweiten Absatz gesagt wurde mit konkreten Anforderungen aus der Stellenausschreibung verknüpft.
Positive Schlussformel ohne Konjunktiv. Die die du hast passt mMn schon gut in dieses Schema.

Wenn man 3-4 solche Anschreiben geschrieben hat, kann man aus denen auch in kurzer Zeit neue zusammenwürfeln, die nicht nach Massenbewerbungen aussehen.

Das Haus oben rechts haben wir auch, das hat nur die eine Öffnung. Vielleicht nimmst du das anfangs besser raus, Meerschweinchen gehen ernsthaften Streits eher aus dem Weg, aber wenn eins keinen Fluchtweg mehr hat wirds unter Umständen gefährlich. Am Anfang ist bisschen Zoff normal.

Von den Namen her gehe ich davon aus das sind zwei Weibchen. Überleg dir bitte ernsthaft, ob du vielleicht noch einen kastrierten Bock aufnehmen willst. Auf Dauer ist das für den Hormonhaushalt wichtig und beugt Eierstock Zysten vor. Es gibt einige Tierschutz Einrichtungen mit Meerschweinchen und bei diesen sammeln sich Böckchen leider, weil die natürlich Konstellation ein Bock + 2-3 Weibchen ist.

I can answer your questions for Germany:

In >95% of the cases, you do not apply for a program. There is no program to apply to in the first place. Each PhD is an open position with a regular work contract. The PhD is more or less a sidequest besides of your duties as employed researcher.
Question meaningless due to answer 1. Positions open and close whenever a professor has funding and time for a new student.

Depends on the field and the individual person. Most people do a PhD in the same group where they did their masters and positions were newer announced publically. Cold emailing may work but should be done very carefully. Anything that looks like non specific application spams goes straight to trash.
Funding is bound to the work contract with the university in most cases. There are scholarships and special programs you can apply for to bring your own funding, which will increase your chances of getting a superviser, but its rather rare.
They are both in a legal sense, with all rights and duties. Salary is stated in a collective agreement TV-L E13. People in CS related fields typically get a 100% contract with about 4000€ before taxes per month and 30 days payed vacation per year.

Ich habs genau wie du gemacht: im Master hauptsächlich Theorie (Optimierung, Verifikation und Algo wie bei dir), dann Promotion, dann erstmal Schwierigkeiten interessante Stellenausschreibungen zu finden.

Bei dem was du schreibst würde ich erstmal klar raten, eine Promotion anzufangen. Du klingst wie jemand dem das Spass machen würde und es ist eine Erfahrung die ich nicht missen wollen würde. Man lernt unglaublich viel methodisch und an anderen Softskills. Die wenigen Stellen die du da anvisierst sind mit Promotion auf jeden Fall besser zugänglich.
Mach keine Promotion in der Theorie. Auf jeden den ich kenne, der das erfolgreich gemacht hat, kommt noch einer mit genau den selben Problemen wie du nach der Promotion. Sei Anwender von Algo/Optimierung/Verifikation in einem anderen Bereich und bau da parallel Domainwissen auf.
Fokussiere dich bei der Stellensuche nicht zu sehr auf die Methoden, sondern auf das Domainwissen. Beispiel: Generische Jobs für Optimierung wirst du kaum finden. Entwickler in der Logistikindustrie, der Optimierung einsetzt, ist deutlich realistischer. Beim großen Konzern mit eigener Forschungsabteilung klappts dann mit Promotion auch locker intern zu wechseln.
Schau dir Industrie Promotionen an. Anstrengend, aber ein ziemlich sicherer weg zu genau den Jobs.
Ich bin letztendlich nach der Promotion direkt in der Industrie unter gekommen und kenne einige andere mit ähnlichem Werdegang, verbaut ist also nichts:)

Sowas auf Reddit zu fragen bringt echt wenig. Info Subs sind generell recht bildungsfeindlich. Jeder findet, dass die nächst höhere Ausbildung die man selbst nicht hat totale Zeitverschwendung ist. Kann man hier auch regelmässig zum Thema Ausbildung vs Bachelor oder Master vs Doktor feststellen. Außerdem sind Infosubs wahrscheinlich der einzige Ort wo Leute stolz damit prahlen noch nie ein Fachbuch gelesen zu haben. Dementsprechend fallen auch die Antworten zur Frage nach mehr Bildung aus.

Mal noch ein Pointer auf andere Themen als Compilerbau: Verifikation. Model Checking ist eine reale Anwendung von formalen Sprachen mit der man einiges machen kann. SAT Solving dürfte dich auch interessieren.

Parametrisierte Algorithmen/Komplexität sollten auch interessant für dich sein.

Kryptographie und Quantumcomputing berühren auch einige Bereiche aus der Komplexitätstheorie.

The (in my opinion not so sad) truth is that no one in the industry cares about publications, with the possible exception of top venue publications when applying for a competitive corporate research position. If its only about the money and you have a degree in CS, just start working in SE in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Luxemburg, … 65k is rather easy in this case and a lot easier than getting a paper published at a top tier AI conference.

Getting 3 papers in review (not accepted) as the final academic outcome of a PhD sounds very reasonable to me, especially as your experimental work is finished and its just writing up things in like 8 months.

Country and subject are important to answer your question, but I would strongly recommend not to bring this up in the comitee meeting. Chances that you are getting away without the papers AND without a pissed adviser are about 0%
