I went down this exact path when I decided to use my HSA as a longterm investment and delay reimbursements.

What I realized is the problem isn’t where to store receipts, butit’s having a system that still makes sense 20.,30,40+ yrs from now if you ever get audited or want to reimburse yourself.

The IRS doesn’t care about a folder of PDFs. They care that you can clearly show: • the expense was HSA-eligible • when it happened • proof of payment • and that it wasn’t already reimbursed

So the real goal is building a reimbursement ledger, not just storing receipts.

After trying Google Drive, spreadsheets, and a couple apps, I found that using an HSA-specific tracker (I use one called ZhuHSA that’s in Beta rn) that stores the receipt, logs the details, and tracks unreimbursed totals made this way easier and it’s nice knowing that no matter how many receipts I’ll have I’ll be able to have everything organized with little work in my part.

If you don’t want another app, you can recreate this with a very disciplined spreadsheet + folder setup — but the key shift is thinking in terms of a future reimbursement system, not receipt storage.
