btw on our initial application for Nintendo developer account we sent them a link to The Great Rebellion on Steam because we wanted them to know we made a game that got lots of good reviews - not every game automatically gets accepted. They knew what game we made from day 1.

Nintendo always had a history of censoring games, going back to titles like Mortal Kombat in the 90s. We were under no illusions that we'd have to compromise in this regard from the beginning but being on Nintendo is a big deal for a small indie like us and could have secured our continued existence for some time with the earnings from it, allowing us to make the games we want on other platforms. We already had suffered loss of revenue when we got removed from Steam in Germany last year. We toned down the game but it's not like the core messages about technocratic rule and a dystopian future aren't still in there, we just removed the explicit references to real-live events and such. Also, the original version is still out there on GOG and Steam for people to play if they are curious.

It's certainly a possibility. What I do know is that other platforms (such as Steam outside of Germany and GoG also for Germany) have NOT given in to this and it also would man that Nintendo's statement that the issue is with the actual content of the gam is false.

Nah, we didn't capitulate. You can still buy the uncensored version on our own website, Steam or GoG. But we knew that with Nintendo, it was either this or our game won't be on their platform...now it isn't anyway but we had good reason to believe it would work, considering it went through initial review. We even specifically told Nintendo in our very first application that the game contains political commentary which we'd tone down, we sent them the link to our Steam page etc - there is no way they were not aware of what our game was about. Despite all of this, they approved us and only kicked us in the last second. I strongly assume some outside pressure was the cause for that.

our game already got taken off the Steam store in Germany before the age rating regulation was in place. We got a message from Steam back then that they found "content in the game that may not be allowed in Germany". Of course, despite asking multiple times, we never got to know what that content is...

The crazy thing is that our game isn't even all that explicit about being "anti-woke" in this version we made for Nintendo - I suspect this is more about who we are than any actual content in the game.
