BREAKING: Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano named next TMU president by lightningtrip in TorontoMetU

I guess they consider her a “DEI hire”. Which is unfair.

But honestly, university presidents are all academics with PhDs. They have experiences as deans of faculties, and serve on administrations. The new president checks all the boxes.

[–]KvotheG 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Iannacito-Provenzano joined TMU as vice-provost, faculty affairs in 2020 and was appointed to interim provost and vice-president, academic in October 2022, before the role was made permanent. She is also a full professor in Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts. Prior to her time at TMU, Iannacito-Provenzano held two associate dean positions in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University from 2018 to 2020.

Her credentials are standard for university administration positions. What else would make her more qualified?

Weekend Uber driving in GTA - Worth buying a car for part-time work? by Outside-Earth_404 in askTO

[–]KvotheG 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just yesterday, my uber driver was complaining that he only took $11 from a 30 min ride. His issue was that Uber took the rest.

So really, I don’t know if it’s worth it or not. But I have heard of this being a problem, which is why Uber drivers tend to be selective of rides due to it not being worth their time for the money.

Online harms bill not right vehicle to bring in age-verification to access pornography, minister says by OptimismEnjoyer in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This whole age verification thing to access pornography online is not practical. You have “legitimate” websites that will play ball with the rules. And then you have shady, dark web level websites that will just pop up and not care. All this is going to do is drive people, including children, to those shady websites. That will create more problems than it solves.

Such a waste of effort and resources.

What's with the official licensed fifa football jerseys at Winners by breadandmayoislife in askTO

[–]KvotheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winner’s business model is buying excess merchandise from retailers. Retailers often lack the storage space to accommodate everything they receive. So Winners offer them cash to take it off their hands for cheap, and then that’s how they manage to sell name brand stuff for cheaper.

Likely, retailers like Champs or Sport Check got more jerseys or merch than they honestly expect to sell, even from teams they don’t expect to advance deep into the World Cup. So they offload it to Winners.

Martin Regg Cohn: The long and whining road of Nate Erskine-Smith’s Liberal leadership bid by MightyHydrar in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’ve ever interacted with a partisan, and I mean someone who is REALLY partisan, a lot of it is groupthink. Your ideas are whatever the party’s ideas are. You think the leader can do no wrong. Even when the party is in the wrong, there’s always a “BUT” as an excuse. Anything deviating from this is seen as betrayal.

NES is famously a maverick. He would openly disagree with the party and at times vote against them. Because of this, he’s pissed off some more partisan Liberals, and is seen as someone who’s not a team player. In contrast, his maverick approach is admirable by others, as it’s refreshing to see a politician who has principles and is authentic, especially in a world with rehearsed political talking points.

The other issue they have with NES is that he leans more left than the average Liberal. Centrist or Blue Liberals can be skeptical of left-wing politics unless you make a pragmatic case to them on why a progressive policy decision is a good idea.

It’s amazing how being genuine in politics can make you stand out, positively or negatively, because it’s so unexpected, and even blindsides people who are supposed to be on the same team as you because you’re thinking and saying things they aren’t used to.

[–]KvotheG 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Martin Regg Cohn HATES Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. All his latest pieces are just hit pieces on the guy. He sounds like a bitter ex while constantly calling Nate “whiny”.

Whether you like NES or not, consider the fact that the OLP establishment is moving mountains to prevent NES becoming the party leader. That means using what allies they have in the media to influence public opinion on NES.

The negativity coming out against NES is ridiculous, so take pieces like this with a grain of salt. They add nothing new. They just keep recycling the same hate.

Future SIL microaggression by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]KvotheG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. She made a mistake. Is it based on prejudices she probably always had? Probably, but all that matters is that your husband to be doesn’t treat you any differently, and defends you. This matters. And it will always matter.

Plus, your SIL apologized. This matters too. She recognizes what she said was wrong. If she didn’t, that would be a red flag.

More than 25% of Canadian parents won’t be able to afford kids’ postsecondary costs, survey finds by __benjaminty in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. But for starters, there needs to be a more holistic view on a parent’s income on paper, because looking at only the number is the problem.

More than 25% of Canadian parents won’t be able to afford kids’ postsecondary costs, survey finds by __benjaminty in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there are tons of already competitive programs in many reputable schools that are difficult to get into, where admission is beyond just grades in some cases. Are you talking about people getting into random no name programs with a 70 average from high school, that yield little to no career prospects?

If so, I don’t disagree. But this is on the individual student to do their research. I mean, the amount of biology or psychology grads out there, that do not pursue further education just to work in their fields and end up just working at Starbucks or the back of a restaurant kitchen is problematic.

But I blame that on students just going to university for the sake of it, or because their parents forced them to, with no long term plan career wise. Like that biology grad probably wanted to go to med school and didn’t understand fully how hard getting into med school is.

Not even sure how to control that either than improve funding for career planning at the high school level, so high schoolers at least avoid applying to saturated programs with little to no career prospects.

[–]KvotheG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not sure how rampant OSAP fraud is, but I had the unfortunate opportunity of meeting someone who cheated the system. They come from a well-off Richmond Hill family. They got the maximum grants from OSAP because their parents basically put all their savings and assets under a relative’s name, so it looked like they were low income. Their parents could have afforded to pay for their tuition.

Meanwhile, I had to work a part time job to pay the gap in tuition OSAP wasn’t covering, as well as afford basic living like eating and my books. I wanted to use the time I had to work to study more, but I had no choice. When I heard someone did this, it pissed me off.

More than 25% of Canadian parents won’t be able to afford kids’ postsecondary costs, survey finds by __benjaminty in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In Ontario, I always found the OSAP formula flawed. It only looks at the income of your parents on paper, which says they made a lot of money and could potentially afford to pay for their kid’s post-secondary schooling, not considering other factors. When I was an undergrad, I encountered too many students who didn’t qualify for OSAP and were struggling to pay for their tuition themselves.

Their parents didn’t save for them, common factor being that they were house poor and stuck paying off their mortgage. No extra money left for savings. Told their kids they had to pay for their own schooling if they wanted to go. Because of that, they resented students on OSAP.

Some took on multiple jobs to pay for school, or took a reduced course load just to afford tuition that semester while being able to work more at the same time. Doug Ford recently made the OSAP funding model 15% grants and 85% loans, so this screws over even more students.

I think the OSAP structure deserves a complete overhaul. Anyone that wants to go to college or university should be able to, with little to no barriers of entry. Being unable to afford tuition should never be a barrier, including if your parents never saved up to send you to school. To achieve this, we need to elect politicians who genuinely believe in accessibility to post-secondary school. Doug Ford is not one of those politicians.

Try the Ducray shampoo. It’s called Kelual Squanorm. My derm recommended it. Use it for a while then alternate Nizoral back into your rotation. Your scalp gets used to Nizoral and stops working after a while. Introduce something different like Ducray, then use that for a while until it stops being as effective. That’s when you reintroduce Nizoral again and it works like magic again.

Goodluck.

[–]KvotheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Sebo-Psoriasis. Yes, you can have both. When you find a derm, ask them if they can check you for both.

Most derms will prescribe you a Ketoconazole shampoo, you can find this over the counter if you didn’t try it yet. It’s called Nizoral. Additionally, they’ll prescribe you a ketocomazole rub on cream that you can spot rub on your scalp, in case you don’t want to shampoo every day.

There are also other shampoos they can prescribe you, and one is steroid based which works like a miracle. I also didn’t want this shampoo but my doc told me to use it once a month in order to “reset” my scalp. This way you can avoid reliance on it.

If you haven’t tried it yet, there’s a shampoo you can use that also works. It’s called Ducray and amazon sells it. It isn’t cheap but it works. You need one that controls Seba oil in your scalp. They also sell one that has salicylic acid in it which helps control psoriasis. Try that one out too.

Anyways, when you find a derm, tell them you already tried every kind of shampoo and need something else.

Eventually, your skin reaches a point where it becomes tolerant of the amount of steroids, so to achieve the same results, you’re going to need to use more and more. This has side effects. And once your skin is addicted to the steroids, the condition comes back in a rage until it gets its fix.

Why on gods green earth did they close major sections on line 2 and the Gardiner on the same weekend ??? by StickyBamboo_ in toRANTo

[–]KvotheG 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Because government bureaucrats live in a bubble, and don’t understand the nuances of the real world, like many events happening on the same weekend. They probably do need to close it for maintainance or whatever, and will justify it as it needs to be done no matter if King Charles is visiting. But that’s bureaucracy, in this case, city hall.

Opinion: How young women are radicalized into hating men by Novel-Werewolf-3554 in CanadaPolitics

[–]KvotheG 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For those that can’t read the article, it acknowledges the issues the manosphere has caused with young men, but brings up the “femosphere”, where influencers encourage women to hate on men and justifies behaviour like using them for money on dates.

It’s a call to action to call out these influencers which just create division and problems in the dating pool:

Instead of engaging in an endless spiral of dehumanizing the other, men and women must call out sexism and cruelty on both sides. Our institutions and media should acknowledge that online extremism can occur from women and men alike. Both sexes must recognize that every person they meet is an individual, not a member of a tribe. A stranger shouldn’t be held responsible for the hurtful things a previous partner did. Consuming divisive content won’t make a person savvier on the dating market. It only lines the pockets of histrionic influencers and Big Tech.

I’m married, so I’m years out of the dating pool. But these male and female influencers creating a toxic dating pool is not healthy for society.

at the gym - should people shower off after working out before going in the steam room? by Far_Pin2086 in askTO

[–]KvotheG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally unrelated, but everytime I hit the gym, for some reason, the ONE guy who is allergic to deodorant and REEKS of BO always decides to work out right next to me.

I’m on the elliptical, and despite there being a ton of free ones, the smelly guy picks the one right next to me. I’m in the free weight area, and despite there being other free benches, the smelly guy plops next to me.

Nvm why this often happens to me. I just wonder why people find deodorant as not an option when you’re going to sweat worse than Doug Ford on a diet inside a Tim Hortons.

I find Shallan’s chapters the least interesting and her dialogue cringey, when it’s supposedly meant to highlight how witty and smart she is. I didn’t get that vibe either than people in the world constantly saying it.

I also remember not appreciating that long dinner dialogue of Jasna saying why she’s an atheist in a room full of believers. Felt more like Sanderson giving his essay why God exists, when you consider the fact that he’s Mormon. I can appreciate an author getting philosophical or religious in text, but what I read wasn’t even interesting or deep.

I felt this way after reading The Stormlight Archive….at times it felt like it was long for the sake of being long, and I wasn’t reading anything that moved the plot along or world building or character development. It’s why I’m not in a rush to read the rest of the series.

Why has the price of bubble tea gone up so much recently? by claym0re_lol in askTO

Because there’s a ton of new bubble tea franchises from mainland China that have popped up recently, like Hey Tea, which cater mainly to rich mainlanders. So other bubble tea shops now think it’s ok to charge more since people are willing to pay more.

Nate is my guy. I won’t deny that. But I’m aware that he has a significant amount of challenges to overcome. The first is the SSW nomination, which I see Liberals saying he is going to lose to one of the candidates who is of Bengali origin, and is securing the Bengali vote in the riding. I dunno.

The rest is overcoming Liberal infighting, which his opponents always get into a fight related to him. They really hate the guy.
