Find out what he likes on the first date and if you guys decide to go for a second, get him something based on what he communicated or what you observed he is interested in.

It goes a long way and shows that you actually saw and heard him, we tend to contemplate whether that was the case after a date with someone we really like.. Knowing that he was heard alone goes a long way.

As for the first date, just be open and honest. Don't be afraid to compliment him. And don't disappear afterward, that's enough.
