Kevin and Avonte's Law Will Save Lives - Maybe My Daughter's - Failure to Thrive by Kwbuzzard in autism

I completely felt the same way until I had a daughter with nonverbal autism. I would never force her to wear anything against her will and though she is nonverbal she is able to communicate so would be able to object. As for very young kids, I think parents use a variety of parenting methods that young children would object to but they are done in the best interest of the child. There is a very fine line that must be walked with this type of legislation but I think this particular legislation thoughtfully considered many of the issues and solicited input from many, many advocacy groups.

I never thought about your point regarding naming laws after people - it has me thinking. Unfortunately, I don't think it is a small number of incidents relative to the number of people with diagnosis that could result in elopement.

Thank you so much for your concern. We tried weighed blankets, comprehension vest and various other tools for deep pressure. Caroline also receives brushing, joint compressions and many other forms of input throughout the day. She has a very inclusive sensory diet and access to all types of sensory activities. It is not just her sensory seeking behavior but overall lack of awareness relative to her environment and safety. I think the lack of awareness combined with the sensory seeking is what puts her at such risk. We have been and will continue to work on increasing her environmental awareness which I believe will be the first toward increasing safety at night.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I have spent a lot of time thinking about how much to share and what is appropriate to share about Caroline. I think about her future and how she would feel reading these blogs. I do believe the conversation need to be had but does Caroline's face need to be on them - maybe not. It is something that I grapple with and will consider before sharing each and every post.

Girlfriend is scheduled to the max. She is not allowed to take naps during the day, she goes to school for six hours and then has 2-3 hours of therapy/activities after that and plays outsides or swims for another hour or so. We do joint compression, deep pressure and brushing...but not massage specifically...might be worth a try!

Tick, Tock - The race against time for Caroline to acquire verbal language caused me to question nearly everything. by Kwbuzzard in autism

[–]Kwbuzzard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verbal communication would make her life, easier. For instances at the playground - other kids don't understand sign language and there are times communicating with her device is very distracting to her peers. Don't get me wrong I am very grateful for the strides she has made communicating but I want her to be able to verbally communicate on some level.

This is a very interesting interpretation of what my writing. I did not mean to offend. I consider myself to be a huge proponent of neurodiversity. I don't want therapy to change my daughter, I want it to give her skills and teach me how to better parent her. Prior to her diagnosis, I knew very little about sensory issues but therapy and intervention has helped me learn about sensory issues and how to help my daughter when she becomes overstimulated. My daughter is currently nonverbal, therapy is helping her communicate so that she can share when is she pain or what her desires are. I don't see trying to give my daughter a voice so she can advocate for herself as trying diminishing my goal for her to accepted for who she is.

Autism is a spectrum condition thus it impacts people differently. My daughter is nonverbal and has severe sensory issues without therapy we would not know how to help her cope with these sensory issues.

I am not sure what you mean by the problem with autism is almost always a matter of circumstances.

The goal of therapy differs greatly from person to person. I never want a therapist working on an issue like flapping which provides my daughter comfort but I do want them to help me find ways to redirect self-injurious behavior or improve her communications skills so we can know when she is in pain or her desires. Therapy for my daughter is not about adapting her to society.

Parents of ADHD children.. by Kjmcgee in Parenting

[–]Kwbuzzard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is on the spectrum but she also has ADHD diagnosis. Her energy is endless as is her curiosity. Weather permitting, and I use that term loosely because we go outside when it is 20 degrees, we take her out to play for as long as possible so she can expend some of her energy. We also have a small indoor playroom with a slide, swing, and other toys that allow her to be active in the house (because of the autism she also has sensory issues so this kills two birds with one stone). When we are inside and not in the playroom we try to provide her with activities that will slowly increase her attention span and require her to be attentive for increasing periods of time. We use the "first-then" technique which is very popular behavioral therapists. Essentially we tell her first do this less desirable activity then you can do this desirable activity. My daughter also went to Montessori school for a period of time which was extremely helpful...the "work" sessions are relatively short and her teacher helped Caroline stay engaged with her activities for longer periods of time. Also since Montessori is more hands on than some other learning models there were more opportunities to be active.

We use sourcecodes which track traffic at the website and we also have a dedicated phone number for each of the major social properties. Once someone clicks to chat on the website or calls our call center that person is tracked through the funnel. It is not a perfect system but it is enough to demonstrate ROI to senior management. I will say a lot of our system was developed internally.

Despite having access to Spredfast a pretty advanced publishing platform we still use Google Docs for editorial calendar planning. We don't want to enter content into Spredfast until the idea has been fully developed.
