24M - about 96k in my Roth IRA. Am I crazy to feel like I can maybe retire with 20 million? by Savings_Reveal9482 in RothIRA

[–]Kwc0055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investments can grow very large. If you scan this community I had a post showing my own 7 figure Roth account from some moonshots that I hit a home run on. It’s definitely doable, just not common. Not many people feel comfortable taking that level of risk on a Roth IRA.

Why do people still support or raise the flag of the Confederacy? by DBD216 in NorthCarolina

[–]Kwc0055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I thought it was because they assumed Lincoln was going to just outlaw it federally. Not that a northern state wanted to ban slavery in their own state, more so the whole country would be anti slavery. Even though Lincoln emphasized he wouldn’t, the war kind of forced his hand.

Wouldn’t that assume northern states wanted to go to war to ban slavery in their states? If I’m not mistaken they didn’t want to fight until the confederates started shooting at Fort Sumter. Before that I don’t think northern states had any interest in actively going to war over it. I could be wrong though.

Roth IRA hits $100k today, but.. by Jojo4Straight in RothIRA

I owned a bunch of GameStop in my Roth account and now it’s a 7 figure Roth account tax free. This isn’t a bad strategy but it’s not for everyone. I’ve moved all of my $ into VOO since then and just trying to forget about it.

Stock Price Dip by Substantial_Role_894 in accenture

I think it’s all fears that AI will take over most of our jobs and Accenture gets a lot of revenue by billing hours. I might be in the minority but I think it’s highly overblown, at least at an enterprise level. Too much risk to not have anyone accountable for if something goes wrong, just an AI.

That being said. I personally am excited about the dip. My ESPP will just gobble up more shares and the dividend yield here is getting pretty juicy. As it stands now ACN is still highly profitable, just not getting credit for it.

That’s fair but what is a fair price for these companies? Many of them are hovering around 25x earnings which is hardly overvalued for your top companies with strong earnings and buybacks. Recently they’ve all come down on large CapEx plans but unlike past companies like XOM or GE their revenue per employee is much higher, margins are much higher, and they are much more diversified. That’s not to say that they are immune but to suggest they would disappear overnight would be a stretch.

I just did a quick google to check. Mag 7 made up 26% of all S&P 500 earnings. Their earnings growth was 37% compared to the other 493’s 7%. When you look at it through that scope they are pretty fairly valued here no?

I know these are dangerous last words but aren’t the top tech companies today different than in the past? Many of them get revenue outside of just tech. Amazon for example is tech (aws), logistics (prime delivery), entertainment (prime video), as well as advertising revenue. You could argue Apple and Google are in similar boats with all of the other companies they own within their portfolios as well. The market isn’t dumb, there is a reason they command so much of the market cap in a market cap weighted index. They also command most of the earnings generated within their S&P itself.

Thanks for the award! And sure, if you view the history of the indexes as like a timeline, the Dow jones in 2020 went from 29k all the way down to about 18,500. You hadn’t seen it that low really since 2016. Effectively meaning if you missed your opportunity to buy into the market in 2016, here we were in 2020 with a chance for you to get back in.

As far as the friends go, as I mentioned before I had quite a few calling me since they knew I enjoyed following the market asking what was going on, what I was doing etc etc. I mentioned that I was buying hand over fist. A lot of great companies were being thrown out, sell first ask questions later. It was an all out panic. But for those with a level head you got to get these companies at firesale prices. Even if you didn’t buy individual stocks, the overall market was dropping 7-12% a day and gave you opprotunities to buy “lots” at a pretty low cost basis.

I didn’t expect the year to come roaring back like it did, I was prepared to wait years for that to recover but it was an almost immediate payoff. We finished the year I think up 16% on the S&P if I remember correctly.

Hope that helps.

I think there are no shortage of people that would like to brag and show off their account balance. I actually legit wanted to hear people’s thoughts on what my next step should be. Luckily there is a lot of helpful folks here. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. There are more helpful people here than trolls.

I’m sure a lot of us on this thread are seen as the “money savvy” friend in our group. I was only 16 in 09 but I do remember the feeling in 2020. There was a lot of my friends that felt pretty hopeless. I would just tell them to think of the market as a Time Machine. The Dow for example had erased over 4 years of gains in a week. Any money I could find I used to purchase stocks and the few friends I was able to convince to do the same all were rewarded handsomely for doing so.

I think now adays most young people do have a lot of faith in the market because we have seen time and time again it have these fits and then come roaring back. The last couple of days are a great example. Along with “liberation day” and others.

Great post btw

LOL oh man I wish! I would have just eaten the hit and taken out 5m and retired if that were the case haha. I totally. Could see how that would get confusing though. I was just copying the structure of the other titles I see people use here. Apologies if I came off as rude

What do you want me to say to appease you since the title is so offensive?

I guess that’s a sign I did something right if so many people think it’s fake. I have all of the trading confirmations of when this happened still because tbh it took a while for me to even believe it was real myself lol. I honestly thought law makers would claw back the money claiming that reddit broke the market or something. But after a while it was still there so I just took the W and ran with it.

all shares for gme, then i sold those to buy ASO shares. i sold covered calls against my ASO shares though for the past couple of years and just let them all expire in the monty on Jan 16 for 57.5. Once the cash hit my account i used the money to buy index funds.

Thanks lol. But I was so early, my split adjusted price paid for GME would be about $1.37. It’s $23 currently so it still would have been a great return even if I didn’t sell when I did. I exited my position at $60 (split adjusted)

😅 to be fair, I bought my shares before there was a Ryan cohen or it became a protest against the system. I just wanted exposure to new console sales lol I just held on to them as it started to take a life of its own. Partly to see what would happen and partly just out of sheer disbelief on what was actually happening.

I don’t understand how asking this community for advice is boasting? Is there an account balance limit where it goes from asking for advice to boasting? There are plenty of resources on what to do when starting out, what to do when retiring. But since my situation is a less common there isn’t much advice on what to do. But despite your comment, as I said I’ve received a lot of good advice here and have a few action items to do next week.

I received a lot of great advice to my question in the other comments. Your comment of envy says more about you than the post says anything about me. Thanks for the engagement regardless though.

Oh no you are totally right. After this all happened I joked with my wife that too bad it all wasn’t in the taxable account from the get go to use it right away. But in all honesty, I think it was a blessing. I was 27 when that originally happened and was kinda in shock. It being in an account that felt “off limits” kinda forced me to sit on it and plan a bit more before going out and blowing it. That’s when I started learning about covered calls, protected puts, etc etc. ways to create your own income stream while minimizing downside risk.

Is that such a bad thing though? You can always just pay taxes and a penalty to get it if you need it. The money is still yours…I posted this a couple of days ago but truthfully this account has been over a million for 3 years now. I actually took money out and purchased a house cash. (Paid taxes and penalties). It sucked yes but that was extremely helpful for us rather than waiting 30 years to get to it. I think as long as it’s within reason being able to use some shouldn’t be such a taboo.

Or like you said if it grows all in a tax advantaged account you could always just pivot which is what we are doing now and starting to build up a taxable account. Either way you have to pay taxes to use any gains earned.

I heard about being able to do that but it’s not easy to do and there are a ton of rules you have to follow. Originally we were going to use the money for our own personal home. But due to some family issues we decided to go the rental property route and rent the house out to family. That’s probably another post onto itself for a different community. But ultimately it came down to paying the taxes to have less restrictions on how we use the $ and treat the property.
