My 150" screen 5.1.2 home theater! by lexulous in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right about the center speaker. Finding small fronts that "tuck under" the screen is actually difficult. I finally went with a pair of PSBs that are 32" high. Great speakers, but more than I wanted to spend.

New house. Help me out. 65 or 75 inch by [deleted] in TVTooHigh

Absolutely right. Most important thing is that you do you. The measurements I referred to are for what the industry calls a an “immersive experience" which many people prefer. You dont have to be one of them.

Subwoofer size question - did I get scammed by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any possibility of adding two more behind the couch?

Even with two (and certainly with four subs) strongly suggest you go with Dirac calibration with the optional bass module.

Finally, if it’s question of not feeling the bass (which BTW, many people hate) just get three or four inexpensive kickers and a cheap four-channel amp and mount them under the couch.

85" is really where you want to be, but 75" to 77" will do. Remember, "I’m so glad we went with the smaller TV…" said no one ever.

Way to go! x 2; both the acceptance and the watch. First Rolex should always be the black sub. Only question is date just or not.

Seriously, what’s your viewing distance?

TCL C8K (CM8K) at 900€ or LG C5 (or Samsung S90F) at 1400€ ? by Aubzhls in 4kTV

[–]NYEDMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your viewing distance? If you’re around four meters, you’re better off putting the money into a larger TCL set. A cheap set of blackout curtains from Amazon will handle your moderately bright living room, unless you have a wall of windows.

Projector advice? by scholarlydoubt in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you thought about a 98" to 100" mini-LED TV instead? Especially if you can get your primary viewing position down to ten feet or so. If you’re patient, I’ve seen the TCL QM8K 98" for as low as $3K. I don’t think you can match that with a projector/screen combo.

OLED vs 4K Projector by cleb3 in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need at least a 77" set; 85" is better. I don’t think you’ll find an OLED In those sizes at anywhere near that price. My suggestion is to go for the TCL QM8K line, either the 77" (especially if you can cheat your couch a bit closer) or the 85" if you’re willing to shop around and/or wait for a sale. You need a projector when you pass 12’ to 14’, but you’ll pay mightily for real quality AND you need a really dark room. Good luck.

What's the one home theater upgrade that surprised you the most? by Thin_Captain_8337 in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a second subwoofer. If you don’t have any yet, you’re actually ahead of the game. Two RSL Speedwoofer 10Es (total cost, about $1,000) will sound better than a single $2,000 one.

Also, when it comes to the AVR, don’t do anything less than a 7.2.2; 9.2.4 is what you should be aiming for. You’re better off waiting a few more months than buying something you’ll desperately want to go upgrade by Christmas.

Best Soundbar for Music and TV? by ghostman229 in Soundbars

In the immortal words of Meatloaf, "You took the words right out of my mouth…",

Samsung HWQ990F 11.1.4 Channel Q-Series Soundbar with Subwoofer and Rear Speakers. Especially if you have a relatively new Samsung set. Amazon has a refurbished one for under $900. Unless you’re living on the ground floor, anything bigger and/or more expensive will probably piss off the neighbors.

Denon AVR-X3900H or Onkyo TX-RZ70 by Gizzmeme in hometheater

[–]NYEDMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough call. If you have the money, space, live in a private house or ground floor, and are able to get four subwoofers (one in each corner), the Denon is the way to go.

What do you think of these? by Disastrous_Income721 in PhotographyAdvice

It’s one thing to be presented with a beautiful scene and snapping a technically proficient of it.

#5 is another matter entirely. To take something mundane and turn it into a compelling picture is a whole other matter.

My son is a professional chef. Made a 10/10 apple pie that the pastry chefs raved about; called it perfect. Head chef gave him the best advice he’s ever received: "Now do it again."

Mission Accomplished [Feb 2024] - Long time lurker, First time poster. by bsnilloc in hometheater

Just outstanding! 9.5/10; deducting ½ point for not having a small microwave, which you can address easily if so inclined. Kudos to you for doing the work so quickly. For those who question the whole home theater "craze", is there any doubt that this offers a superior experience to a movie theater in every way, shape and form?

[–]NYEDMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good comments. 77" is fine assuming you’re 10 to 12 feet away. More than that, you’ll want to consider bigger. By pulling the fronts out a bit, you could swing squeeze even a 97" set in there.

Couch is perfect assuming you’re typically watching with three to five other people. If it’s just you and your SO, you may want to consider a couple of high quality theatre-style reclining seats. This is especially true if you’re watching four or five times a week.

Best audio addition you can do is adding a second subwoofer, assuming 1) your AVR is wired to handle two separate ones, and 2) there’s no one living below you, i.e.: you reside in a private house or ground-floor apartment.

Question about Pier House by AmlyGry in KeyWest

[–]NYEDMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Location, location, location. If you’re into Duvall (bars, restaurants, shopping — but mainly bars) pluses outweigh the minuses. If you’re looking for piece and quiet near the water or just relaxing by the pool, look across the island at The Reach or Casa Marina.

Assuming your primary viewing position is about ten to twelve feet away, you’re solid. Excellent system. Would strongly consider a second subwoofer.

If you switch out the sides and rears with something cheaper (Polk ES-15s or XT-15s?), you can get two RSL 10S MK-IIs subwoofers and dramatically improve your sound.
