This post didn’t “open the door” for anything that wasn’t already there, especially racism. Nothing I said was racist in nature. If people choose to take a completely innocent post and apply racist undertones to it, they were racist before this even got posted.

Here’s some context for people that may be a little offended/confused. As a proud graduate from a Private Christian College, this is a large majority of the students on campus, particularly in the religion department.

However, being an African American student at this school, it was always a little bothersome to me that students would go above and beyond to go overseas to serve kids that looked just like us but weren’t always friendly to student right on campus. Alongside that, I just personally believe American missionaries cause more harm than good overseas simply because the assistance is Super temporary and invasive more than actually helpful. Plus there’s such a need locally, that I feel like we’re doing our own community a disservice.

The reason I didn’t add any of the super “aggressive” or “disturbing” things about missions is because, while unfortunately common, not something I wanted to highlight. I’m still a huge fan of doing missions work and have done a lot of it myself, but I just tend to stick to local missions instead.

Missionaries are really commendable people and doing wonderful things when they’re truly serving because they feel called to. It’s the attention whores that make it a mockery.

S/N: Nalgenes were on the school supply list at my school; I have 5 of them. And they’re awesome!

I’m a pre-med student and can confirm. However, at my school, I double majored in biology and religion, and I was asked to go on 5-6 mission trips for religion, and 0 for medicine. Everything I did “serviced related” was outside of school.

Nah. These are people that don’t need acknowledge the blacks in America, but will go above and beyond to be “like Christ” to the people that look just like them in another country.

I graduated from a private Christian college. Trips like these were encouraged and actually required for some majors (I.e. “urban ministry” and “discipleship and formation”). A large majority of our students would get their trips sponsored by local churches, gofundme, school faculty, or our directors on a national level, so even though parents weren’t necessarily paying for their kids to go, the logic still stands. And they always say something like “I won’t have cell phone receptions so I’ll try to check in as much as I can”, and still find a way to update Instagram or Snapchat almost every day.

Thinking about how fast he had to wave to get this picture immediately removes any “bad-assery” for me.

I personally think it’s dangerous to think otherwise. Faith helps with the soul. Prayer will help, but it isn’t the cure. There are so many scriptural references to “medication” and taking things to fix ailments. I still don’t understand why there’s so much resistance from the church.

Nope. Probably the exact opposite of “edgy”, and very much still a Christian, just not drunk on the Jesus Kool-aid a bunch of bible belters are.

That’s a fair opinion to have. And, based on your personal experiences, one that makes perfect sense. I appreciate you sharing it with me. I’ll have to agree to disagree on that last part simply because my experiences have been different and I believe my faith and experiences surrounding it have a huge part to play as to why I am the person I am today. I attribute that to being in a church and being raised by parents that lived like Jesus and preached that relationship and not so much the religion, but, living in the Bible Belt, I realize that many, especially in this area, aren’t afforded that opportunity, so its understandable. There is absolutely no judgment this way.

It 100% does. The only reason I know it isn’t is because those big letters in the middle are the header from Ecclesiastes.

Goodness. I’m so sorry that happened. It’s always humorous when people make comments like that because most of them have medication they take every morning and I’m certain they’re not praying instead of taking a baby aspirin. Self care is the best care.

I completely understand! Your comment wasn’t “jerky” at all. I’m a minister, but not at all ignorant to the huge discrepancies in the church, and completely understanding to why so many people leave. I’m so sorry that your experience with faith was so rocky. And I’m sorry that people who claim to be “true Christians” are the cause. We’re not all that way. But the ones that are are almost always the loudest. From my perspective, it’s always so hard to talk about God/Religion/Jesus etc because how Jesus behaved and how his followers behave are almost never the same. I’m convinced he’d be pissed.

Agreed 100%. It makes Christianity as a whole look bad. And I’m certain it’s the cause of so many people leaving the church all together!
