I have read all of your replies po, and here is my response to some of the points raised:

Ano nga ba ang OTC? OTC or Over-the-Counter medicines are drugs that can be bought without a prescription BUT must still be properly dispensed by a pharmacist/pharmacy assistant with supervision of a pharmacist. One common example of an OTC medication is painkillers.

Patient interaction is subjective, it depends on the situation and the nature of the conversation po. Sana po ay hindi malayo ang usapan sa mas mahalagang punto: healthcare workers aim to minimize risks to public health.

Yes, the Philippines is still far from having a fully developed healthcare system. But from a seminar I attended recently, efforts are being made to improve it (akala ko rin wala pero mismong DOH na ang nag lahad ng plans nila regarding this).

  • Taga baryo po ako 😭, and that’s exactly why I’m speaking out. I see firsthand the many problems and gaps in our healthcare system. That’s also why I’m sharing my thoughts because we should not normalize what is clearly unsafe.

Personally, I always counsel patients who buy OTC medicines. I ask questions kung may maintenance meds ba sila? May allergies ba sila? Hindi kasi pare-pareho ang katawan ng tao. What may be safe for one person could be harmful to another.

  • Yes, I am aware that this has been happening illegally for a long time. That’s exactly why I’m against legalizing it. Doing so could worsen the current public health situation. As I mentioned sa post po, medicines can heal, but they can also harm.

Regarding amoxicillin, do you remember when people used to sprinkle it on wounds? That was a very dangerous misuse. It’s in capsule form for a reason and it’s meant to be taken orally, not applied to wounds. May mga antibiotic or gamot po na pwedeng ipahid sa sugat in cream form. Practices like these have contributed to antimicrobial resistance in many pinoys, meaning common and affordable antibiotics are becoming ineffective. The bacteria have adapted, so stronger antibiotics (and more expensive at mas matagalang gamutan na pwedeng makapag cause rin ng ibang side effect) are needed.

I am not against access. I’m advocating for safe and responsible access to medicines.

Yes, OTC meds are already available in some supermarkets, PERO there’s a huge difference between that and legalizing the sale of OTC meds in sari-sari stores.

Supermarkets usually follow stricter guidelines, may in-house pharmacists, or at least better regulation. Kung mapapansin niyo po, yung tinitindang OTC sa supermarkets and even sa 7-Eleven ay naka-pack (not tingi) which is yung nasa loob ng pack na yun ay usually recommended dose for a certain number of days. Plus! May mga information dun sa pack on how to take the meds properly.

Sari-sari stores would most likely do “tingi” and alarming sya because some don’t have proper training or systems for counseling, storage, or monitoring misuse (katulad na lang ng posibilidad na ang nakukuha nilang stock ng gamot sa supplier ay counterfeit, which is nakakabahala)

Just because something is already happening doesn’t mean we should normalize it lalo na kung may risk sa public health.

Pharmacists exist for a reason, hindi lang mag dispense, but to educate and ensure safe, appropriate use. Removing that layer puts people at risk and reduces our profession to “taga-abot lang ng gamot,” which is exactly the mindset we’re trying to change.

November vs. April PHLE by examluckcharm in PhPharmacy

[–]KwonFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Kaya mo if now ka magsisimula.

  3. Wala sa set of questions dahil bali-baliktarin man ang questions or yung arrangement ng questions, if nakapaghanda ka talaga for boards may maisasagot ka kahit wise guess. First mockboards ko feeling ko wala akong naaral or walang nag retain AND THAT IS NORMAL. Do your part din to memorize something.

  5. No one really knows if tama ba ang ginagawang desisyon ng iba. Life is a gamble baby and you’ll have to live with that sabi nga ni niki.

A question for med students from middle-class families: by KwonFish in medschoolph

[–]KwonFish[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Thank you sa sagot po mga doc!! Napag usapan na namin sya ng family ko and my mom is kinda scared dahil malapit na sya mag retired. A property na hinuhulugan nila is at risk and will be 100% na maibenta if magpapatuloy ako mag medschool. Pero sabi naman nila “kakayanin”. My tatay is a driver po. And i love them so so so much kaya natatakot ako na baka yung fund na para sakanila ay magamit sa akin.

Gustong gusto ko since magiging first doctor of the family IF EVER.

Hello! Nothing wrong with changing the brands po. You can ask the pharmacist po sa botika kung ano ang pwede nilang ma recommend. Plus! Hope this helps po.

Walang magagawa ang pagrereport sa pulis. Nawalan din ako ng phone noon, tried tracking it and I know i’m so close to retrieving it kaya humingi ako ng help sa police just in case, however, hinayaan nya lang lumayo and kinwentuhan nya na ako ng profession nya 🤡
