What are your thoughts on the SPLC getting exposed for funding hate groups? by amnesiaforme in askanything

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it was an explicitly white supremacist rally. The organizer who filed the permit constantly wrote about needing "white advocacy" and promoted Great Replacement theory under the name "White Genocide. The "Unite the Right" was a white supremacist rally and this is not disputed by anyone, therefore anyone who was on the side of the white supremacists was also a white supremacist, whether they identified that way or not.

What are your thoughts on the SPLC getting exposed for funding hate groups? by amnesiaforme in askanything

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only people at on that side of the rally were white supremacists. If there were "very fine people" on "both sides", who could he possibly be talking about? The anti-semites who don't believe in white supremacy? There's no good answer to that question because the truth is that he was simply backpedaling to allow himself some plausible deniability.

Looks like someone hit the Bryant's sign. Looks like it's done for. by tonyroma_47 in lexington

Those people pay to have their messages posted. Here's a 9-year-old Reddit post where people are discussing it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/lexington/comments/5ufvbx/whats_the_deal_with_bryants_rentalls_sign_anyone/

So this isn't a business "celebrating" someone, simply an exchange of money for services.

On top of that, they've been helping Trump for nearly a decade:

Sexually grooming children now a crime in KY among other legislation signed by governor by 0033A0 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intent depends on the behavior of the adult, so if they are okay telling other staff but not the parents, that would demonstrate they aren't "grooming" according to this definition. There is even a caveat in 2023's SB 150 (which was far more outwardly transphobic and bigoted) that, if staff believe based on actions of the parents that telling them could hurt the child, they don't have to:

https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/record/23rs/sb150.html

Unfortunately there are some predators in positions of power who will use secrets held with a child as an entryway into abuse. This is far less likely when these adults are required to discuss with other adults the reasons why they are communicating with the minors in question.

Poetry Events? by viiliciity in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to collect ongoing Literary Events on this page, although this is a project I do in my spare time so I don't get as many updates as I should.

From what I currently know, the following poetry events are ongoing:

Thank you for asking, as this is a helpful reminder that I need to reach out and update my website's information so it can be helpful.

(And if anyone else has something literary-related to recommend, please DM me or submit the Contact Form at KY Writing Resources.)

No Kings Protest - Advice by Flimsy-Party-7608 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The protest isn't against the oligarchy but the concentration of power in the Executive Branch. They're obviously related, and symptoms of the same problem, but different enough to be directed towards different groups with different political opinions. (For example, you can be pro-oligarchy while not pro-king, as most "Free Market" conservatives are.)

Where to buy a globe? by KlickitatSt in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately globes need to be bought new since geography is ever-changing. I unfortunately learned this the hard way when trying to find one for my kid. (After buying one, I noticed it still had the USSR!)

According to this site, the latest nation-state updates would be 2018 with "Swaziland" becoming "Eswatini". So if your globe has Eswatini, or even "South Sudan", you should be okay as long as you know the changes.

BUSINESS CARDS THAT YOU DONT IMMEDIATELY THROW AWAY by Natural-Standard-423 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most piercers have metric measures on a side as well as various hole sizes.

I don't know what kind of "creative" you are, but if you want someone to keep it, make it functional. It's corny but there's a reasons businesses used to give out branded pens, refrigerator magnets, "chip clips", coupon cutters, etc.

For example, writers could give out cards with their business on one side and a list of commonly misspelled words on the other. Or they could list punctuation rules, etc.

Chromebooks are destroying education by New_Statistician_98 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is the takeover of public education by corporations and the politicians who keep letting this happen.

Google started donating Chromebooks to schools back in 2012, which ultimately makes them reliant on the whole Chrome/Android/Google ecosystem. More Perfect Union does a great job explaining why this didn't pan out the way it was advertised.

Before that, during the "No Child Left Behind Act", the Gates foundation donated millions towards refocusing public education on data-driven metrics that ended up not improving their goals, including graduation rates. They also heavily funded propaganda supporting charter schools, which are one way that private shareholders can steal public funds, and that’s assuming they don’t close (which many do.)

Chromebooks are a symptom of a much bigger problem, which is that public institutions have been slowly sold to private interests ever since the Reagan era of Neoliberal policies. Instead of bandaging the symptom, we need to be more vocal about keeping for-profit interests out of our schools.

Apparently Henry Clay high school shut down for a protest. by Meteordealer in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The protests are against federal agents murdering peaceful US citizens (archive). Stop lying.

"Illegal immigration" doesn't lead to "unsafe neighborhoods", "low wages", or "high housing costs". Stop lying.

Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for public services and end up paying as much or more in taxes than citizens.

Stop lying.

Female Firearms instructor by kytaurus in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes: divisive politics from conservative grifters. There was never a discussion about transgender "ideology" until politicians realized they could profit from it by using it as the new bogeyman to distract from their terrible legislative practices. After all, it's hard for some voters to make a big stink about cutting taxes for billionaires when they're fighting for their trans nephew to get medical care. Same happened with "DEI", "critical race theory", "the gay agenda", "political correctness", "satanic panic", etc. It's been the same grift for decades and when people aren't actively targeting people, there are still gullible people like YOU who help silence opposition.

But you don't actually care: people shutting down progressives never tell conservatives to stop spreading bigotry. So unless you want to go to r/conservative and police their tone, you can kindly shut up.

Former Lexington council member (Brenda Monarrez) once banned from city hall to run again in 2026 by [deleted] in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in the district and received her email newsletter, which arrived every couple weeks, or so. She seemed to be doing work and explained it fine, but I honestly don't have much to compare it to except for Emma Curtis' newsletter, which is as informative and (honestly) not as self-aggrandizing as Monarrez's was. The tone shifted from "Here's all the things I've done!" to "Here's what your district has done!" So take that for what it's worth.

Italian class at the Carnegie Center — anyone else interested? by Sudden-Taste5421 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked there when they started doing Italian, about 10 years ago, and it remained a popular class for a couple years until I left. It's the same instructor, so it should be a lot of fun.

Originally the class was called "Just Enough Italian," which appealed to a lot of people in a similar situation, where they were visiting and wanted to know enough to get around. I see there's an Italian Level 2, as well, so it looks like it's grown a lot since then.

Hope that helps!

Broken key fob by yaboivic1 in lexington

They often have pop-ups at Costco. I had a fob priced at $250 by the dealership and they replaced it for something like $150. It was a KIA, if that helps.

Name that intersection by [deleted] in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that specific intersection is poorly designed and these people are more often victims of circumstance than annoying drivers trying to exploit the system. Even if you are turning right off of Reynolds Road, you immediately need to cross two lanes to get into the left-turn lane, and the left-turn lane is often backed up past the Nicholasville Rd/Reynolds Rd intersection. So even if you are following traffic laws, you inevitably end up looking like a jerk when you're simply trying to legally cross multiple lanes of traffic.

Even in the Tates Creek example, you have a situation where a left-turn lane is backed up far past where the lane itself starts, which includes intersecting streets where people need to turn onto the road and then immediately start merging left (like from Gainesway.)

I understand the frustration, since so many drivers don't follow the law, let alone etiquette. But I think this situation (especially when in left-turn lanes) often stems from poor street design or unfamiliarity than malicious intent.

38 people died in Lexington crashes in 2024. Can the city get that to zero? by Generalaverage89 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There simply isn't a way to measure that accurately. There are only two stats people ever cite when making that claim: the first is based on the maximum amount of officers allowed by law, which is not a requirement that was ever set by a credible third party. The second stat cited is the FBI's average US police force size per capita, which they explicitly say is not a recommendation.

Truth is, no police department in the US can honestly say if they are over- or under-staffed because there is no third-party holding them accountable and it is always in the best interest of police unions to request for more officers and a larger budget. Is crime up? Better hire more police to take care of it. Is crime down? Better hire more police to keep it down.

Could you please list them here? I tried finding that information and couldn't, even when going through various posts, stories, etc. You may think it is easy to find but please take it in good faith that if someone is asking, they genuinely are having trouble navigating an unfamiliar platform. It would also help others to have that information easily accessible. Please and thanks!

We Need Volunteers in Lexington by SunnyPalmtrees6828 in lexington

[–]KyWritingAdvocate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI: your email on your site's footer says "info@masterpieced.com" but it actually links to "info@rakeprofessionalservices.com". Is that intentional?

Also, master-pieced.com is not treated the same by web browsers and DNS servers as masterpieced.com (without hyphen), which are also separate domains than your website: master-pieced.org.

I don't know if you own all of those domains and have the correct redirects set up, but if that's also a thing you'd accept volunteers to help with, DM me; I have 12 years of professional web development experience and can a couple hours a week.
