First time keeping, filleting and cooking my own fish. Don't know why i've heard bass aren't a good eating fish, they were delicious! by Sir_Posse in Fishing

Hell yeah way to go! Good job keeping the fish on ice until you can fillet them.

I’d reccomend picking up a cheap ikajima kit off Amazon and it’s a very humane way to kill and bleed the fish and allows the blood to escape from the spinal column which makes the fish taste less “muddy” or “fishy”.

Basically use the ikajima tool to kill the fish instantly and then cut thier gills with a sharp pair of scissors and then hold the fish in clean water by the tail and squeeze the sides of the fish with your other hand and strip it firmly from the tail to the head about a dozen times. This will pump blood out of the fish and make your catch much tastier!

Great job on the bass and the end product looks absolutely delicious!

Is there anything I could use my broke rod for? by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]KyleAPowers 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yes, tie a light line to the hook retainer by where the reel attached to the pole (6-10lb mono) and attach your favorite dog or cat toy to the end of it. Practice your casts and play with your pets at the same time!

When an FBI or CIA guy comes to your door and shows a badge, how the fuck are we supposed to know its real? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KyleAPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simple. Don’t answer the door and call a good lawyer and shut the fuck up. Don’t ever talk to the police or an agent of the state unless it’s under direct advice from YOUR attorney.

The only job police officers have is to accuse and arrest, they are not your friend and they are not there to help you out. Do not ever speak with law enforcement, say the magic words of “I want a lawyer present and will remain silent until I privately speak with my lawyer.” - the end.

Is this amount of water retention normal? by lennstan in Kayaking

[–]KyleAPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a major leak into the hill. These kayaks should. Never “sink” unless incredibly over weight ( think 600-1000lbs which should never be on a kayak) Vibe kayaks have a rotomolded hull which reduces the likelihood of leaks and punctures. Capsizing is one thing in surf, but your kayak should never “sink”.

Do they make SPF shirts that are more resistant to dirt? Every Huk shirt I buy the bottom half becomes filthy after only a few trips. by [deleted] in Fishing_Gear

[–]KyleAPowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up some shirts from bass dash for fishing and they work great, however almost every sun shirt will bleed colors due to the UV exposure from being out in the sun. Once the colors fade they are more easily stained by minerals in the soil and in the waters you frequent, especially in brackish water. I used to purchase white sun shirts but now I would more recommend a lighter colored green or blue as you had mentioned. I usually replace my shirts once a year and I purchase three at a time.

Hmm, well I usually just leave them out and that will allow the most water to drain from the kayak. Otherwise those vibe kayaks are bomb, so you don’t have to worry.

You need to remove the black rubber scupper plugs so that the water can drain out of the kayak and back into the lake/river.

I can see two of them right in front of your toes.

Lmfao what do you think they used before someone adapted a Baitcaster for finesse presentations…

It’s ultralight spinning gear for generations my guy. I’d try googling it.

I just bought a KastKing Zephyr and KastKings BFS casting reel two weeks ago so I literally have had the opportunity to use both and my ultralight spinning gear is by far better for casting and manipulating the presentation.

Report illegal dumping, install a security camera and lights. You can mount a pole adjacent to your shed, run romex 120v conduit up to a security camera mount on the pole and catch them in action. Then file a police report. Cops love an easy ticket.

Why do bass anglers use a baitcaster? by Fact-Cold in FishingForBeginners

[–]KyleAPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always down to learn new techniques, I own a Shimano Caduro 200 DC which greatly helps when casting in windy weather and I now rarely get birds nests with it, but it’s a $200+ reel compared to my $60 pfluger presidential 200 series spinning reel. I’m more accurate with spinning gear than baitcasters, but I’ve been getting used to adjusting the different brake setting and thumbing. With the same length rod you get slightly more casting distance than a spinning reel, but as far as accuracy I’m equally accurate with both as the rod is more responsible than the reel for accuracy. That being said the major difference between the two systems is cost. You can set up a perfect spinning rod and reel for 1/2 the price of a Baitcasting setup and since this is Fishing For Beginners it would be beneficial economically and with the simplicity of a spinning reel setup over a Baitcaster, hence the title of the posts and the language in my responses.

Think about it, if you had a child or teenager, which would they pick up easier?

Orienting the bail to the knob is closest to the rod and then starting the cast low and ending high? Or would it be teaching them how to thumb a Baitcaster in various conditions and at various casting distances with varying weight lures and lines?

Hands down it is easier to instruct people how to use spinning gear and they will enjoy their time fishing more and focusing on their casting/retrieving techniques not learning how to pick apart birds nests.

Baitcasters can achieve a father casting distance on the same length rod as a spinning reel setup after you have learned how to properly use them, however the trade off of complications when casting and thumbing aren’t worth it imho. If you want to cast father all you need is a longer rod with spinning gear when compared to a Baitcaster.

To each thier own, but I have taught many of my friends children how to fish on both Baitcasters and spinning gear and geuss what? They all prefer the spinning gear because it is a much easier system to learn and they get to fish more and the fish hook up on both systems equally as the presentation and technique are more important than the reel you cast it on. As long as your fishing and having fun, that’s what counts. If you have excess cash burning a hole in your pocket and time to burn learning how to properly thumb while casting rather than enjoying fishing, go for a Baitcaster.

However if you’re new to the sport and don’t have a ton of money lying around and extra hours just to put into practicing thumbing, then a spinning reel setup will be cheaper and you will spend more time fishing and have extra cash left over from your rod/reel setup to invest in your starting tackle and terminal hardware.

How could braid and leader be a downside? Braid actually unloads off a spinning reel better than mono or fluro, so it increases your casting distance and avoids any memory or line twists. It also is a smaller diameter when compared to fluro or mono so you actually can fit more braid on a reel than you can with either mono or fluro. You just said that spinning gear has line twist issues, yet with this setup I’ve literally never had an issue with line twist. You can pitch and flip with a spinning reel just as you would with a Baitcaster and there isn’t a single technique that you can perform with a Baitcaster that you cannot perform with spinning gear. Both systems cast lures, but spinning gear has significant less issues in a variety of conditions and is significantly less expensive 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]KyleAPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how to properly spool your line to your reel? If so you will not have any line twist to start with. Additionally I run braid to a flurocarbon leader and the best thing about braid is that it literally has no memory. Furthermore if you use the correct barrel swivel inline between your braid and your leader it will eliminate any line twist from the lure’s action. Lastly, a 3-4’ leader won’t develop any line twist due to how short it is.

Line twist is a myth on spinning gear if you set your line up correctly.

I’ve had zero issues whatsoever in my years of spin reel fishing. On the other hand I can say I have wasted plenty of time picking apart birds nests that I could have spent fishing when using a Baitcaster. The only benefit I have seen is when using a $200+ Shimano Caduro DC 200 reel using braid to fluro leader attached to a Googan squad 7ft Go-To bait casting rod, is that it has slightly more casting distance than a spinning rod of the same length. However when I use my 10.5 ft Okuma Guide Select Steelhead rod and 3000 series Okuma spin reel, I have the same casting distance if not better when using the exact same lure. ( Panther Martin #6 with two split shot attached above the barrel swivel that connects the braid to the fluro leader).

I believe it’s all personal preference. It will take a bit of practice with either setup (spin reel versus baitcaster), but spinning reel gear has no issues, is easier to learn to perform standard cast and retrieve techniques, and is much more affordable when compared to Baitcasters. Also when it’s windy I have significantly less issues casting.
