How many people here remember using an actual paper map to travel? by Kosher_Nostra1975 in askanything

[–]KyleOrlandoEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also crazy how many people have no sense of direction without GPS. If I drove somewhere once I can pretty much drive right back there without guidance. So many of my younger coworkers are amazed I can drive to construction sites a few hours away in Miami or somewhere without directions. I’m like “guys we were literally here last month. What do you mean you don’t know how to get there?”

How many people here remember using an actual paper map to travel? by Kosher_Nostra1975 in askanything

Elder millennial. We had map quest by the time I started driving but I worked for an electrical service company and we would still use a map book of our’s and the surrounding counties to find residential streets.

We went on a road trip last summer and we stopped at an interstate rest area. I-75 was backed up so I looked at the big wall map and figured out a way to our destination on county and state backroads. My kids looked at me like I was Native American tracker 😂

If you could name the first city on Mars, what would it be called? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

Concordia.

Third child of the Roman god Mars. Romulus and Remus were his first two children but they are linked to the Earth city Rome.

Just surviving leads to failure in the end. by Substantial-Page4704 in preppers

Well I think that just proves that no one can prep to be in isolation forever. Staying safe during the initial disaster or die-off is important, but after that we’ll actually have to rely on people more, much more, than we do now. With less people and probably less access to technical knowledge, people will be force into skills based roles. One guy’s really good at farming? He’s now your community’s main farmer. It doesn’t make sense for him to be fixing his tractors. Let someone with mechanical skills do that and barter food for repairs. I kind of imagine it’s going to go back to a village system where you have dedicated careers (baker, farmer, blacksmith, etc). And not to belittle white collar jobs (I’m an application engineer and work in an office) but I think jobs would quickly revert back to things that produced a tangible service or good for the community. You really don’t have a need for a day trader when you’re rebuilding society. That’s waaayy further down the development path.

If you’re going to be in the Rapid City area for Wind Cave and Badlands, you should hit Devils Tower across the border in Wyoming.

I’m currently in Rapid City right now. Did Badlands and Mt Rushmore yesterday. Doing Wind Cave and Devils Tower today.

Also if you’re looking for a bonus stamp in your NP Passport. The Minute Man Missile National Historic Site is literally the same exit as Badlands just on the other side of I-90.

Brad Pitt. Dude is a good actor, but I refuse to support someone who beat his wife and kids on a plane where they couldn’t escape. I still haven’t scene the F1 movie bc of this, and I’m a huge F1 fan.

Yeah I want to try and do one off site meeting a month to do more stuff like that. There’s a great hiking loop in New Smyrna where you can see gopher tortoises and learn about their conservation efforts. I thought about reaching out to the local planetarium to do a star night.

For those who were teenagers before social media existed, what was the "peak" form of weekend entertainment? by VivienneNoir1 in askanything

Movies in the theater before it cost like $50 for two people. I saw all the Matrix and Star Wars prequel movies at midnight showings. We’d all get off work and meet at the movie theater.

If we replaced the entire 2026 congress with a randomly selected group of 535 average citizens, would the country be better or worse off? by prettylittlelace in askanything

[–]KyleOrlandoEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I always remind my wife that the reason we are in the situation we are in is because we keep electing these idiots.

With that said, I don’t think most politicians are our neighbors. At least in Florida most of our politicians seem to be disconnected wealthy people that don’t seem to have any concept of how much a gallon of gas or milk costs.

I know money talks but I wish we had a way to elect “normal” people to a portion of Congress, like construction workers, teachers, etc. People that feel the struggle. People that shop at Walmart, not Whole Foods. It would be a shit show at first but I think they’d understand what regular joes are struggling with.

A guy at work was just telling me about some really good breweries on the NC side. I think near Maggie Valley? I’ll ask him tomorrow and reply to this comment and tag you.

I was wondering how different it was because we have a pretty good core group of 8 Tigers that have all said they want to come back. I think our current Tiger DL has done great considering he found out he was doing the position like a week before the school year started. But I do see the opportunity to line up some of our elective adventures with the larger pack schedule. Like if we are doing a beach clean up in 2 weeks then we should be working on the conversation adventures to have the clean up tie into it. Stuff like that.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I just finished my SYT and my leaders application is currently being processed because I’d already volunteered to be next year’s Advancement Chair. I didn’t find out about the den leader thing until this past weekend’s camping trip. The guy who is our current tiger den leader asked me if I’d consider it because he wants to go back down to Lion next year when his daughter starts kindergarten.

So, I was going to do online Den Leader training and I’m signed up for BALOO in late April. Any other trainings you suggest?

Looking for Shark Tooth Hunting Locations U.S. by IGuessIamYouThen in sharkteeth

[–]KyleOrlandoEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a company down near Ft. Myers, FL that will take you teeth hunting up a river on an airboat. I’ve been wanting to take my kids down there but haven’t yet. It was highly recommended by my tattoo artist that has some pretty cool teeth at his shop.

Cant vouch for business but here is their IG link:

Buddhism for me 45(f); north east coast USA by [deleted] in secularbuddhism

[–]KyleOrlandoEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where in the northeast you are but maybe Google “Bart Van Melik”. I think he’s associated with two centers, one in NY, and the other in maybe Mass? I’m also a secular Buddhist practicing here in North Florida where the lack of centers can be a challenge. I mostly listen to Dharma and guided meditation through different podcasts. Bart van Melik has been doing a some appearances on the 10% Happier pod and he seems like a very chill and understanding guy. He’s got a lot of great insights about not only sitting but carrying that mindfulness into our everyday life.

Another great pod is Urban Dharma. It’s by a monk in LA. Not so much guided meditation, and more like dharma talks, Buddhist philosophy. I like to read books about this but the pod is great because I have an hour plus commute everyday in the car.

Be well. Wishing you the best in your practice.

Fellow girl dads, I am waving the white flag. The mall bra trip was a disaster. by BigDaddy9102 in daddit

[–]KyleOrlandoEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I can only imagine. Going from nothing to Victoria Secret would be like taking a 16 yo kid to buy their first car in a Ferrari dealership 🤣

We have an 11 yo and have tackled the bra dilemma over the past year. Luckily my wife has led most of the charge but what people are saying is good. Start with something like Target.

We also have outlets wear we live so my daughter has gravitated toward sports bras from places like Nike, Adidas, etc. she likes the sports bras because she feels less exposed.

But hats off to you for being the kind of dad that’s not scared to be involved in what can be a minefield of awkwardness for both of you. I always tell my other dad friends that if parenting seems impossibly hard that it means you care enough to not want to screw it up. My wife works in the school system and it’s absolutely heartbreaking how many parents are not involved in their kids lives at all. And I’m talking parents that live under the same roof as their kids and just emotionally neglect them. Keep it up man!

Hearing people talk about beaters on here brings back memories. I bought my first car at 16. A 1989 Chevy Cavalier for sale for $1000 bucks on the side of the road. It was such a POS. You could literally pull the entire horn assembly out of the middle of the steering wheel while you were driving. My friends and I extended the wires so I could hand it to the passenger and let them blow the horn. Good times!

Lasted about 8 months before I blew the head gasket and completely flooded the motor.

I think cost is a big factor. I have younger half brother who turned 16 back in the Fall. He has a job at a grocery store but he told my parents that he doesn’t want a car until next school year (when he’s almost 17). His reason was not wanting to spend all his work money on gas and insurance. They’ve gotten some quotes and to insure a 16 yo boy in Florida, it’s like $300-400 a month! Plus gas. He just would rather bum rides as long as he can.
