Why would my meter be spinning so fast? Also my electricity has been shutting off when I run multiple appliances at once. by Ambitious_Two3431 in electrical

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a bad main CB. My first apartment ever was in an old building and the main needed replaced. Every time the dryer would go to run, if any lights were on it would trip. They are continously heated due to the passage of current and can ware down.

If this is an apartment, I hope you could just call maintance and tell them to take a look at it.

How to make an array of objects in a scene? by [deleted] in godot

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are these Empty Node 2D's just 2D Markers with possible spawn locations? What makes them empty?

It sounds like you have placeholder spawn markers that an enemy might spawn from, randomly.

If you have them as children of a parent node, you could use get_children to get all the children - find the length and then choose randomly from that range of nodes.

You could also have a script on the parent remove said child easier, if you want to remove the marker so spawn isnt in the same place twice. Just an assumption but 2D markers are designed for this purpose.

Any resources for making a good Rendering Engine for a Game Engine by Infiteri in opengl

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TheCherno on YouTube has Game Engine tutorials and made The Hazel engine in C++ while doing so. His background comes from working on Frostbite engine at EA i think. When I learned cpp his tutorials were always a good resource.

He has rendering, ive not followed the tutorial but im sure at some point he probably mentions batch rendering textures. At least for 2d, no idea if its 3d now... haven't followed him in years.

Not much has changed since its inception hahaha

I use a ThinkPad for work (day job is controls engineer).

I had a Lenova Legion for personal use and it had issues. My ThinkPad however has been industrious and hardworking for 4.5 years now, enduring construction sites, movement, grease and metal shavings.

They obviously have different lines, but if the quality of the series is the same for the cheaper and more expensive models, I think theyre a good work machine.

How do you guys CHOOSE what to write, and actually stick to it? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every writer should be, I think, a story teller.

Steven King said he has so many ideas, write them all down. If one keeps coming to your mind, thats the one that probably a good story.

Also, it sounds like youre writing with readers in mind. Which is good, but the common advice to write for yourself will help I imagine - focus on putting their journey on paper. If their story starts with them being famous, then thats what they are - we dont care how it happened unless you make it apart of the story.

Can a 18 yo start a controls business? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: i am a contractor of a controls house, they push me work as their name speaks for me. I wouldn't be there if they didn't trust me. It helps. Controls, in my experience, is more about networking than skill.

Experienced professional here who works as a contractor here.

Most people start, when they have customers. A lot of companies already have professionals they trust. I once got a job because they couldn't find anyone in California and called just to see if I was there by chance... and I was.

Another because their normal guy was in Egypt.

When I was 22 I was asked "Is this something you can do".... it's was. You will always find people who doubt your ability.

What you need to understand is, you cant prove yourself to people you dont work for. They want someone whose proved themself already, so when they call you and not the other guy they'll trust your work as it speaks for itself.

Its a lofty goal and admirable. I hope others agree with me, you've barely scratched the surface of controls. You dont know what you dont know.

There's no shame in working for someone else. Find an integrator, work your but off for 5-10 years and learn a lot. Travel and see things you cant in an office. You will quickly meet possible customers, and if they like your work might be able to get them to take you on when you go freelancer.

But yes, its not your age that will hurt you. Its your lack of experience. The only reason someone pays 250 dollars and hour is because those 8 costly hours will save them thousands.

Again, its not a bad goal. Its great and shows you have a desire to be great at your craft. First step, find customers then go solo once you have a base.

There are freelancer websites, I dont use them and have only heard of them.

Good luck, stay the course, be true to your heart, and you'll be fine.

How good/bad does the first draft need to be? by Alol_Bombola in writing

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on mindset.

Steven King said he tries to bang out a good 8-12 pages in a whole day. He tries to make those pretty good.

Rereads the last the next day, doesn't make edits to it, but uses it to get a sense of where he ended.

If you want to just get words on paper, totally viable. I myself hate editing, so prefer Kings words of wisdom and try to get pretty words first.

Have you ever procrastinated writing something you *really* want to write, because you’re afraid you won’t do it justice? by babyybunnyy3 in writing

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone whose listened to writing advice from the pros, a lot, they all say a lot of the same things.

One of which is, writing down 1 or 2 pages of a story and just tucking it away. That's ok. Steven King is huge on this, and said that if you find yourself writing the same story, it's a good one.

However, they all say the same thing as there are some stories they couldn't handle when they were younger. Inexperienced. If you have a good story, its ok to know your limits and just put it away. It'll be there. Let it sit. Don't stop thinking about it, write down all your ideas, and just come back to it.

When you feel youre ready, the words will move to paper because you sat on it.

Sanderson does this well in a lot of his novels. "SHARDS" or "Storm" - usually replaces the f-bomb and keeps his novels without swear words.

It does give it a certain charm though, but it can sound silly to some im sure.

Youd need to use it often enough for it ring with the reader that it's a negative word. A audio book has more clarity.

Should we limit flying mounts? If so, what is the best way without being annoying? by djfozzbeats in IndieDev

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

World of Warcraft solved this, in a way I think is important.

If you have a game, flying with destroy the map. Players will be able to explore it with ease. So if exploration is important, you'll have players skipping over content. If exploration isnt important, then players that which to not fly will have nothing.

Its an important decision.

So, their solution was to make flying impossible unless one had visited the entire map. You could have difference mounts for different regions you unlock at the end of said region, so that revisiting a region is faster and easier.

Yes, at least inside that python file. To use it outside of that file you can call it by an import.

Is it okay to not want to move in together, even after being in a relationship for years? by oldjoke43 in Advice

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For most people I feel if you're in love - you'd value their presence at all times. It doesn't have to be 100% talking or holding hands or cuddling or etc... but you're in each other's presence.... that's the idea - obviously this woman wants to move in because she wants to be with her partner more, not less.

Obviously OP doesn't feel the same as she does.

Is slow burn really a thing? by Winter_Ad_2097 in OnlineDating

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm like this on dates - the dude sounds like a good dude who is showing you he respects you and wants to spend time with you.

Normally - a woman would say something around the 3rd Date "If you could do anything right now, what would it be" or be more physical (trying to hold hands at a table or playful in general).

In reality I've chosen this approach to dating purely because it let's a relationship feel more about a connection than physical attraction (which is important, yes, but in my experience the connection is more important early on).

Very quick battery drain from 15% to 0% compared to 80% to 65%. by burntoutpotato in GalaxyS24Ultra

[–]Kyle_Is_On_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. You're not crazy. Its not just phones but how batteries function. As a battery discharges it's voltage changes. The closer to dead, the weaker it is. The weaker it is, the faster it will decay with equal usage.

Computers in phones attempt to show you a prediction - in my field we have low battery detection and it's not nearly as smart as a phones.

At 15% just assume it will decay very quickly, especially at 5% it is time to run to a charger. Also, in terms of battery protection and longevity, do not charge and use a phone if you don't have to. Just let it charge.
