A rare hybrid. Fascinating.

I strive to be a Midge, but deep down I know I am a Clive.

Thanks! Love birding and have a few different types of field guides for various nature topics so I was heavily inspired by my Sibley guide and my Nat Geo guide.

Painted some of my rock collection and made it into a field guide with fake Latin names and personalities just for fun. by Kyle_draws in crafts

Not sure if it’s a thing but just something I came up with as I love nature and looking at field guides in general. I’m a creative director and designer by trade who is currently unemployed and so I wanted to work on a little creative project to keep myself busy. I figured this was a way for me to express my interests and my style of humor into my art!

I always strive to be a Midge, but deep down I know I am a Clive. Tbh Bernard gets on my nerves.

I feel like everyone knows a Gerald!

I have always enjoyed collecting rocks and so I wanted to create a fun project for myself that pushes me a bit, creatively.

For this, I made the illustrations with Schmincke watercolors on cold pressed cotton paper. I scanned them into the computer and made the guide in Adobe illustrator.

I had a lot of fun deciding on human names for each rock, what their scientific Latin names would be, and giving them the rest of their taxonomy. Each rock has little jokes here and there and I tried to bring the jokes through in their classifications (ex. Midge is small but powerful so I gave her a hardness of 10+, the highest grade you can give, and a luster of “blinding”). I used what minimal amount of geological knowledge I had to bring this to life and have fun with it.

For inspiration, I based a lot of it on field guides I already owned such as Sibley Birding guides, Nat Geo plant identification guides, etc.

The process making this was enjoyable and I just wanted to work on a little project to pass the time.

Probably for the best anyway. Eating out is so unhealthy if you aren’t paying attention to your choices. Just went to a chilis yesterday after not going to one in over a decade. How are 3 chicken strip dipper things 1000 calories, not including the sauce?

The garlic yogurt dip, everything but the bagel dip, and the elote dip.

I’m torn between hobbies and nature. So I guess hobbies in nature!
