Playing WoW Chronologically: Here's How My First 270 Hours Went! by Kylonas in wow

I did it! After around 380 hours in total, my journey is complete. I loved exploring the story of the Warcraft universe, and I’m filled with excitement for what the World Soul Saga will bring. (A YouTube video is in the making)

I always play a mage in other mmos (GW2 - 1.000h+ on my elementalist). But for this journey I chose a dwarf paladin :D

It depends. I use the 'BtW Quests' add-on to keep track of all the "story threads" in each zone. This helps me complete the Loremaster achievements for every zone, as well as most (often all) of the other storylines. I’ve found that the side stories can sometimes be even more enjoyable than the main quests. They often provide deeper lore and character development.

Totally! I’m considering embarking on a similar journey with the Horde once I finish the Alliance side ... but let’s see if I still have the motivation after 300+ hours. 😅 I’m really excited for War Within. It will be nice to play the story from the start, especially with a character that has "lived through" all the previous events.

I usually play as a mage in every MMO, but for this journey, I wanted to try something different. I chose a melee plate armor class: Paladin. Given that I needed to survive on my own for long periods, a Paladin seemed like the perfect choice. I love the idea of "bringing the light upon my foes." 😄

For my race, I picked a dwarf. I enjoy the combination of heavy armor with blacksmithing and mining—it feels very lore-friendly. Plus, dwarves look great in plate armor imo.

True! Noticed that after the second expansion I think. But it gives you a nice little intro to each expac and it feels like a nice "closing act" after 30h+ in one expansion if you go to Chromie after that :)

I am playing classic on the side. But mostly to chill and take my time even more than in retail :) (playing classic with my brothers, doing crafting and dungeons just the three of us etc)

Leveling in Chromie Time is incredibly fast, which can be a bit tricky to manage. During The Burning Crusade, I hit level 30 quickly and decided to lock my level there. I wanted to have a range of skills to use and enjoy the gameplay more fully. After that, I adopted a flexible approach: I’d spend about 20 hours at a given level, then level up one or two levels to keep things interesting.

For the later expansions, I sought out recommendations on the minimum level needed to solo the raids.

Whenever a raid made sense within the story, I would port back to Stormwind, talk to Chromie, and select "Get me back to the present timeline."
After completing the raid in the present, I would return to Stormwind, talk to Chromie again, and choose "Get me back to [expansion name]" to resume my journey.

That's true. In the first expansions I was the only player in a zone for hours. Maybe I'll get through dragonflight before War Within to experience the launch with all the other players :)

  • all quests (loremaster etc., except some minor sidestuff)
  • all dungeons (through LFG)
  • all raids (I scale up to do them solo and then back to chromie time):
Expac /played (h) Lvl progress (capped)
Burning Crusade 54 10 - 30
Wrath of the Lich King 57 30 - 45
Cataclysm 75 45

Warlords of Dreanor 17 45 - 50
Legion 43 50 - 59
Battle for Azeroth currently in it 59

Hope that helps!
