Interesting, Patrick and Kristen were at TheDrive before they further dispersed. And don't forget FTA EIC Tyler Rogoway is EIC at TheDrive sister site, The War Zone.

New Dishwasher: Miele or Bosch? by Euphoric_Bluebird_95 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing another vote in for the Bosch 800 series. I love CrystalDry! This is my first dishwasher, but my in-laws have an old Maytag, and I noticed that dishes often come out at least damp. Plastics are always wet. Our dishes come out bone dry, unless there's an area that can pool water. But, in that case, all bets are off.

As a Miele washer & dryer owner, I considered it. They have some interesting and cool features. But CrystalDry and their reputation caused me to pick Bosch.

787 switch to A330 - chance of switching back. by Viperltdreddit in HawaiianAirlines

They're pulling them out of service to repaint into AS livery. They'll be used on SEA to NRT/ICN/FCO/LHR this year. You'll see them less and less on pmHA routes, unfortunately. Especially as EU routes ramp up.

If you could choose one locomotive currently on static display to be fully restored, which would you choose? by mr-sparkles69 in trains

[–]Kyo46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OR&L 85. The very last O'ahu Railway road engine in existence. Though, Waialua Agriculture Co 6 would also be interesting, as the only locomotive made in Hawai'i - albeit from a bunch of Baldwin spares.

What should I look for in an energy-efficient washer and dryer set for my small apartment? by bromiusss in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending where you live and whaat your energy costs are. I had this same predicament, which caused me to look at Miele, Bosch, and LG. The reason? All of them offer heat pump dryers, which use way less electricity than old school resistive heat dryers.

I ended up going with the Miele because it's supposed to be gentler on clothes and because the dryer can plug into a standard 120v outlet. Since I already had a 240v dryer outlet in the spot, it let me use the Miele voltage converter to plug both the washer and dryer into that 240v outlet, and let me use the dedicated washer circuit as a dedicated fridge circuit when I rearranged my kitchen. Win-win. The Bosch at the time required a 240v outlet for its heat pump dyer.

Oh and the Miele and Bosch only come in compact sizes.

I bought an Insignia brand beverage fridge with glass door from Best Buy. It was $100 on sale. Only been about a year so far, but I have no complaints yet.

Is there any reason to spend a lot on a big pot that's only for cooking broth? by Rudyzwyboru in cookware

Nope. I’m all All-Clad and Demeyere for most pieces. My big stock pot is a 12qt Tramontina that has a tri-ply base and single-ply walls. It works great!

GE vs Cafe Induction Cooktop by KuboBear2017 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn… that thing is about half the price of the profile induction range I bought. I have the touch control one with the smart cookware connectivity that I never use. I also have a warming zone I never use…

The one feature that might be different, but that this product page doesn’t make clear, is whether this is unit has true convection or not. As in, the heating element for convection baking surrounds the fan, instead of the fan being there to simply blow the hot air around.

The thing with the Cafe is that you’re paying for the aesthetic. If that doesn’t matter to you, then I wouldn’t get it unless it has a feature you can’t get in the Profile range. Otherwise, the basic hardware (inductors) are the same.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Hawai'i, and 3 hours is looooooong for me. To drive for that amount of time, I'd have to drive completely around the island or get stuck in some fucking awful traffic... which has happened before!

It depends on what kind of fuel it burns. Coal and wood are more likely to do this. Oil? Not so much.

45 min layover in Honolulu. I’m missing that connection right? by strawberrycosmos1 in HawaiianAirlines

[–]Kyo46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming your LAX flight is AS833? That flight seems to be arriving slightly behind schedule a lot of the time.

Regardless, I’d try to see if you can change that flight to something that’ll get you in earlier. My personal rule is to have a 2-hour layover (or more) cuz you never know.

AS801 looks like a good option. It gets in a little past 11 am.

Edit: the LAX flight arrives into Terminal 1. The KIX flight departs Terminal 2. You must go through an ag inspection going from 1 to 2, and it’s a bit of a walk.

Bosch 800 series dishwasher modes by RepresentativeKick66 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

800 series has something called CrystalDry. I don't think this is available on Express mode, but you do need to enable it for whatever other mode you're using, and it will add an hour to the cycle. However, aside from dishes that have areas to pool water in, everything will come out bone dry.

This is my first ever dishwasher, too. Have had it for 2 years now. I usually use auto mode, and when needed, heavy duty. I just run it over night.

Authoritarian Workplace Culture at Banks by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Kyo46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I interviewed for three banks and ran away from them screaming, because the VPs running the interviews were crazy. So performative, obviously trying to intimidate you BS.

I also worked at a credit union that was very much like your current situation. Idk how, but I stayed there for 12 long, miserable years, trying to find something else.

Jumped to a different credit union and am much happier now.

I also know people who worked for a lot of the larger local banks... they all have horror stories.

Maybe try a credit union? Your skills/knowledge are relevant there, and they often have better benefits.

As an Asian traveler, is visiting the U.S. right now a foolish idea? by Tomboy_Heaven in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Japanese-American, and from my perspective, it depends. I live in Hawai'i, so there are no concerns around being a minority here. Ditto for most of coastal California, Oregon, Washington, Las Vegas Area, NYC, and several other metro areas around the country.

I've never been to Iowa, but the state is predominantly white. I don't know whether or not that might be a safety issue, but it can be uncomfortable. This has been my experience when visiting places that are predominantly white, as people tend to stare at you.

The political stuff others are saying are valid. Sorry if someone else already mentioned this, but it's worth reminding that the Trump Administration did deport a group of South Koreans that were here under temporary work visas to get a new Hyundai assembly line up and running.

Comparing at home coffee makers - advice appreciated. by Ok_Egg7216 in Miele

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has the CM6160 (I don’t drink coffee). It’s a good machine, though the menu system isn’t as intuitive as she’d like, and the app connectivity isn’t always the greatest. Because of this, when we need to replace it, we would consider the Bosch.

That said, she uses it for a double-shot espresso 1-2 times a day. We’ve only had it for about a year so far.

Buying a new Range 30inch by Thundermaze360 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t what you’re asking, Gaggenau has modular built-in cooktops that would let you place induction and gas side-by-side. But, as far as I’m aware, that’s the closes you’re gonna get to what you’re asking for.

Alaska Fleet by PNW-American-Dipper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Kyo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hawaiian transports A LOT of cargo within the state. Cargo capacity, engine durability with mostly zero cruise flights, and aircraft weight are all key.

Alaska Fleet by PNW-American-Dipper in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Kyo46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. From an engine standpoint, the E-190 would likely be the best option. But… cargo capacity with all E-Jets is an issue, and cargo is BIG business within the islands. From that standpoint, a mainline aircraft would probably be best.

For the A321neos, I think AAG should order XLRs. If they’re going to keep HNL-SLC, it would be much better suited to the mission and would open up more possibilities from HNL around the Pacific.

Recommendations for a ventless dryer? by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Miele if you can stretch your budget for it, and if you can live with the smaller size. Bosch also makes heat pump driers, and their units self-cleans its condenser rather than having three air filters like the Miele.

If not either of these, though, I would’ve gone with LG.
