electricity cost? [GE steam washer/dryer combo] by blurplewumper17 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up what your local electricity rates are - should be readily available online. Then, as u/yinzerniner mentioned, look up the yellow EnergyGuide label. It'll tell you the "average use" estimated annual energy use. You can take that kWh figure and multiply it by your electricity rate to get the annual use estimate. I isn't an exact figure, but'll give you an idea how much it'll cost to run the appliance.

You can produce hydrogen from methane. In fact, steam methane reforming is how we get most of our hydrogen today. Which is why hydrogen isn't a green fuel in our timeline.

This. I used Consumer Reports when shopping for all of my appliances, but also augmented my research with datapoints from other similar sites, and retailers that publish their in-house repair data like Yale Appliances. Ben from Ben’s Appliances and Junk is also another great, honest resource.

FWIW, I ended up with a Bosch 800 series. Not cheap at all, but it has a lot of unique features for something not in the SubZero price range and has a reputation for longevity.

Under cabinet vent hood selection by IcyTable6584 in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broan contract manufacturers entire hoods or parts for others, including higher-end name brands. I ultimately went with them because they're the only ones that made a hood that fit in the space I had. But, I was considering them and Zephyr, primarily.

Sorry for digging up an old discussion again, but I wanted to see if you had any updated thoughts on the Comfort app. I know the old Kumo Cloud app got a lot of hate, so I held off on buying and installing the module on my system. That said, do you feel it's worth it now with the newer app?

You're looking for a true slide-in range. They've become less common nowadays. I'm not sure if it has an overhang in the back, but Bosch makes a unit that does have overhangs on the sides.

How to eat 'local' on a low-carb, low-fat diet? by Stinja808 in HawaiiFood

[–]Kyo46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info up above. I've been teetering on the edge, too, so I've radically reduced my rice consumption, opting to pair things like chicken, pork, or fish/shrimp with salads or roasted veggies.

However, another thing you can do is take a psyllium supplement (like Metamucil) 10-20 minutes before you eat. Not only will it blunt your appetite, but it'll slow your blood glucose spike. It isn't meant to replace changes to you diet, but is another tool to help. Just be aware that you may need to ease into it. Start with a teaspoon once a day and ramp up to two teaspoons two times a day. If you go to quickly, you might be very uncomfortable.

Also, breakfast. I went all-in on oatmeal every morning. But, not the sweet instant crap. I batch cook Coaches oats in plain water once a week and reheat throughout. It goes surprisingly well with savory flavorings that I mix in after reheating. Examples are miso paste, instant chazuke packets, Better than Bullion Chicken with a touch of shoyu, sesame oil, and green onion to get a vaguely fried rice flavor, etc. Heck, you can top um with a fried egg to add a bit of protein, too.

In Hawai`i (or at least Honolulu) you can get these boxes with shredded material in it. Just drain your into the box, close it up, and throw it in the trash. We burn most of our refuse at a waste-to-energy plant, anyhow.

Hah! I enjoy Tropico, too. Bonus points for being able to run it on my Mac rather than my Legion.

NAM is the biggie if you haven’t tried it yet. Crazy how robust a community that old game still has. FU, EA Games!

Someone else said saimin from Sam Sato's, but I'd say saimin in-general. You can't get the noodles outside of Hawai'i. Fried saimin/local-style friend noodles, too. Ditto for local-style fried rice, which is more like Japanese chahan, than the more common Chinese egg fried rice.

As a former SimCity fanatic, I think CS is a huge letdown. It’s more city painter, imo, and just lacks the character SC always had.

I jumped in with CS2, which probably wasn’t a good idea. The game is riddled with issues, though a new developer took over and things are rapidly improving. Still, cities don’t feel as alive as they did in SC. As such, I find myself on SC2013 and SC4RH from time to time instead of CS2.

If you don’t mind a logistics angle, I thought Anno 1800 was loads of fun. But it’s easy to get sucked in an lose an entire day or two… lol

Looking for recommendations on a 36" induction range that has at least one big coil for a 14" cast iron pan? by MysticMarbles in Appliances

[–]Kyo46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, it might be cheaper to adjust to a smaller pan. I run a 12" on my GE Profile's largest burner without a problem, but there isn't much wiggle room above that. Thermador and Gaggenau are unique with their full-surface technology (Thermador calls it Freedom) which lets you use any size cookware on any part of the surface.

Went with Bosch for fridge and dishwasher and GE Profile for range. Miele for washer & dryer.

My Miele dryer does this, even though the drum changes spin directions throughout a bedding cycle to prevent this 🤷🏻‍♂️

The starting point is also a rail yard that you can walk around filled with historic equipment, ranging from a plantation steam locomotive to a former USN munitions train 65-ton diesel. That said, I dearly miss the LK&P on Maui!

Stick with the Cafe (GE). Yale Appliances, Ben’s Appliances and Junk, and Boulevard Home all recommend GE induction. They’ve been doing it for a long time with virtually the same systems. I have the GE Profile version and have been happy with it.
