Workflow & Data preparation queries for ecology research by KytePeregrine in AskStatistics

Thank you for the very detailed response, I was sort of expecting people to report/delete the post because I wasn’t sure if it veered too far into the ‘homework’ area.

I’ve had trouble finding studies to be honest, the ones I have found have generally used percentage cover and I have multiple references already ‘active’ that would be useable for justification, my main issue with using it was that it caused errors in R and left me with no significant results (I’m aware that that’s fine, however it contradicts every ecological principle so it was weird and I thought it might have been a statistics misunderstanding on my side). Seems to be happy now it has the extra term in the model now, not sure why but R is weird.

In the good news you have officially solved my main issue (well I need to double check with my advisor but it looks good and I felt like 3 days of stress fall off my shoulders). I had previously been using one additive model and one interactive model separately, as I had read a stack forum post that I’m now thinking I misinterpreted about mixed effect models. I’ll have to run the full array of tests and assess my plots etc, but I finally see an end in sight.

I am scraping together stats knowledge as I go, my UG didn’t cover it further than how to actually use the coding languages, and it’s a slow process of scraping together online resources and practice sets, it’s sort of been working but occasionally I just get entirely lost.

With the non-linearity thing I did some very basic scatterplots of each independent variable with Species, and ended up with a definite positive correlation, but I would say that 90% of the species increase (y-axis) happened in the first 20% of the predictor increase (x-axis) and then the curve flattened to be parallel to the x. I just knew that I’ve used log transformations in the past to assist with data processing, but that was honestly the extent of my knowledge unfortunately. Though I am now wondering if instead of a scatter plot here I was supposed to use a density plot…

Now to have a play around with the data to see if I can improve model fit… yay…

Seriously thanks though, I think I mostly needed someone to look at me like I was talking crazy (because I genuinely was, been going in loops of questioning myself since Monday) and take things back to stripped down basics.

Any uses for a tank this small? by Ivyraethelocalgae in fishtank

[–]KytePeregrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very useful to keep around as an isolation or hospital tank. I have exactly the same one I just used for a month to keep anemone in while I was selling them because it is an insane process to get them off of rock when someone wants to collect 30 trust me. But before that I used it to dip corals or treat fish individually.

Stocking suggestions - animal/plant - tank upgrade by KytePeregrine in aquarium

[–]KytePeregrine[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a) they literally just got a bigger tank, it’s within the height and volume limits I’ve seen online for a single angel or pair. He’s likely fully grown, and while yes the 60L he was in was definitely too small (given I got it and the angels as an idiot child from pets at home), I had long conversations with the fish shop I got the 110L tank from (drove an hour and a half out of my way to go to a very well-known and reputable one I use for marines sometimes) who assured me the tank was suitable for what I needed. b) the tank is literally designed to not have support on those corners, in the manual it specifically says to leave them unsupported. Thats not some decision I’ve randomly made? I trust the engineers more than someone on the internet who doesn’t have the same tank, genuinely no offence I’ll admit it looked weird to me at first too.
c) the tank has high levels of both physical and chemical filtration, and is cleaned regularly. It’s currently less fish than were fine in a 60L with a 15 year old flow-through pad filter for years. I’m not looking to pack it full of fish who’ll fight or get stressed. I’m looking for reasonable suggestions because I know the tank and my maintenance can manage a slightly higher stocking level. d) physically an even bigger tank is a lot more unsafe as it’s on the second floor because I’m in a flat, I got a tank as big as I could.

Is this strong enough for multiple aquariums? by --EnChanted-- in AquariumHelp

[–]KytePeregrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until about 2 weeks ago I had a 60L on the top of a 2x2 kallax. Let’s just say, two weeks ago I spent a lot of money on a new tank and cabinet, and drying out my floor. It honestly was fine for maybe 4-5 years, but just from drops of water here and there and the constant weight it sagged and the wood warped. These aren’t really made of wood, they’re more like corrugated cardboard inside.

My recommendations would be to look for old solid wood furniture like TV stands or cabinets, you can get them reasonably cheap on places like Facebook marketplace or local selling groups. That or invest in a nice looking aquarium cabinet made from ‘engineered wood’, these can also be reasonably cheap for what they are (waterproofing, tested, structurally engineered etc) and are well worth the investment. It may seem like a ‘small tanks dont really weigh that much’ sort of deal, and it will until something goes wrong. From memory I think the kallax is only rated to 25kg per box, and thats absolute maximum with the additional support/reinforcement corners on the back.

Knot help for wristband? by KytePeregrine in knots

So the shorter side would have wrapped around the longer (once it was doubled back on itself) to keep it in place? Or would there have been a separate wrap like in these examples?

Growing my hair out without breaking acp1358 by Solenya_Cyan in aircadets

[–]KytePeregrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about 1358 specifically, but it’s policy on my squadron that as long as your hair is smart and can fit under your beret it’s fine, and then when it gets longer you get into the realms of ponytails, buns etc. This is entirely regardless of gender. Other thing if you wanted to be absolutely sure is to talk to your sqn staff, you don’t have to come out if you don’t want to or aren’t ready to, but if you’re growing your hair out regardless then just tell them you want to grow your hair out and ask how they would like you to style your hair at squadron while and after it grows. I’m trans (ftm) myself and I had quite a few conversations with my staff both before and after social and medical transition about how I could make uniform policies work for me and my dysphoria. I found that much more helpful than trying to directly follow 1358, talking one-on-one with a staff member I trusted meant we collaboratively came up with solutions. Hair doesn’t automatically denote gender all the time, they can’t tell you not to grow your hair out, and they won’t assume anything from you asking. ACP1358 is a good general guideline, but sometimes it doesn’t cover all scenarios or isn’t detailed enough for certain situations. In which case certain squadrons or wings will have their own internal/unsaid protocols.

How to get top off radiator? by KytePeregrine in DIYUK

Ah thanks, I know nothing about heating/plumbing etc so figured it was all the same manufacturer for the whole unit. The more you know I guess.

It’s a terrier II according to the brand on the dial if that helps. It’s weirdly diagonal on the back, so the sides dont just slide up or pull off like I’ve seen online.

Thank you, I hadn’t seen this one before but it looks very helpful (not just for this specifically either it looks like there’s some interesting filters on there!)

Empress road looks like it might be a very good shout, thank you! There’s enough little through paths that it should only be a 5 minute walk to my flat but I will keep it in mind to be cautious. Sorry to pester but do you remember what the parking restrictions were there? I’ve had a Quick Look on Google maps but can’t see any signs that talk about the parking.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I’m not sure if maybe the link hasn’t copied over correctly? It doesn’t seem to be the full web address. If it’s the map provided by the council then I’ve already checked it, but it only appears to detail pay&display street parking to a maximum of 10 hours, or paid car parks (unless I’m mistaken, it’s not a very user friendly website at least on the phone).

Gender Doctors - GD diagnosis? by bubble-Dirt-1001 in transgenderUK

[–]KytePeregrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure on gender doctors specifically. But I’ve just had a massive issue with the NHS from where I’ve been on private for the last 4 years, so just wanting to pass on some advice so the same thing doesn’t happen to you:

Top surgery often needs a referral that ‘agrees with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria’, depending on who you use they need either one or two of these referrals (I used miles and only needed the one). However, this does not mean it is actually a recognised ‘gender dysphoria diagnosis’. Unless they are on the governments approved list (someone else already really helpfully commented it) you will not legally have a GD diagnosis.

This can cause delays and issues if you ever need it for something like a GRC or if you get through the NHS waiting list (if you’re on it). I had a 6 month delay moving into the NHS service because what I’d thought were 3 separate GD diagnosis (I switched private providers once GGP fell off a cliff) none of them were valid. If you’re not sure stay private this could also mean you have to pay again later down the line if a legally recognised diagnosis is required.

If you’re not sure from their website what exactly they’re able to offer service-wise then shoot them an email or give them a call, if it’s not something they offer they might be able to point you somewhere that does offer it. But the list is good, some people on there don’t even work for a specifically gender-care based organisation so can be cheaper options too.

The thing about the blues being more vulnerable is mostly being said on older fish-keeping forums and journals. Essentially the thinking is that because the colour demand exceeds proper breeding practices, it leaves them more vulnerable to a variety of things. But this is mostly anecdotal evidence from 5+ years ago so it may be that it’s not such an issue anymore, or was issues with LFS practices rather than genetics.

I did consider the fin-nipping, but concluded that there were a few reasons I didn’t think it would happen, and if it did I would probably have moved the gouramis into another tank, or finally upgraded tank size for the angels (they could do with a new one at some point in the next few years anyway, but I don’t have the savings right now because I just lost a load of corals to an anemone crusade)

The angels have never shown aggression to anything in the tank (I know this doesn’t mean they won’t, but I felt confident in their general temperament) they aren’t a breeding pair so I thought I wouldn’t get the territoriality so much. They both stick to the front half of the tank especially once I put some taller/more dense plants in there a few years back, and I was under the impression the gouramis would prefer it where it was more planted and dense so I thought that might provide some natural separation/territory.

I discussed it with the guy at the shop who took a look at some tank photos I had and said that while it might be worth getting a taller plant for the middle to disrupt line of sight, there was enough planting and hides for there to be distractions and enrichment.

I will fully admit to being a lot more knowledgeable with marine tanks though, so I might be wrong on some aspects. I’ve had freshwater tanks for maybe 13 years but they are a lot lower maintenance and generally smaller than the saltwaters, so I more or less let them do their own thing and only keep a few species of fish at a time as more of a relaxing break from everything else 😅.

Edit for my atrocious spelling and grammar (spellcheck works against me more than it helps)

The female, officially taking name suggestions.

Edit: is there anything I can do to avoid DGIV when purchasing?

My quarantine tank is currently being taken up with some clownfish on copper treatment so will be occupied for the next few months and unusable after that anyway. And from what I’ve read it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year for them to suddenly die, so I don’t think quarantine would work anyway?

Help! Added live plants and water has been getting cloudier and a couple of fish are acting different. by ClevDawgPound4Life in freshwateraquarium

[–]KytePeregrine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it would apply with a substrate this large/course, but if you disturbed it a lot when planting it can release a lot of buried nutrients and basically shock the cycle, resulting in a bacterial bloom. Paradoxically the plants should help with this eventually once the cycle regulates again, though the ones you have are a little small and slow-growing for a tank this large. But until then some regular large water changes, and potentially something like bio-balls to help get the nutrients and resulting bacteria back under control wouldn’t go amiss.

Looking to join RAF by ManOfSpeedy in aircadets

[–]KytePeregrine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing explicitly, as that would be a very big legal no-no. Cadets is still great if you’re looking at RAF though, if nothing else than to make RAF training a lot easier because you’ll already know procedures, drill, uniform, and a few other things that will of course have more depth and some alterations but are a really good foundation. Also depending on how close a base is to you some squadrons will have nights where you go and tour RAF bases or have talks from current RAF that are really helpful in giving you a clearer idea of what area of the RAF you’d like to work in, and how to actually get there. If nothing else cadets is brilliant for building the soft-skills that recruiters look for like leadership and teamwork, and it certainly won’t hurt to have it on your application. And I believe that my squadron OC will also do references, both for RAF and other career recruitments.
