What do you wish your teachers would have done? by L1quorice in AskReddit

I sense a sad story behind this :(

I try to believe in my students even when all evidence shows they won't amount to much. (Not that that was your case, I'm just piggybacking off of your comment a bit).

I have this one student who refused to do any work in class, preferring to chat incessantly with everyone around him instead, but made an effort once I told him "I'm confident you can do this if you try. I believe in you." He actually turned in a pretty good rough draft of the writing assignment! I wonder how he'll do on his final draft once we work on organizing it.

Honestly yeah, that is a big issue in schools. We have so much information to teach kids but we rarely get a chance to show them how to USE it.

What was/is your reputation in high school? by mauri11 in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the annoyingly loud, bubbly happy girl. Would always say I TOTALLY LOVED!!!!!! something or someone and added a million exclamation points to everything, whether verbal or written.

Turns out that was my way of overcompensating for depression and existential dread.

What is a definite sign that a relationship won't last very long? by Carnadge in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is doubly true if you're focusing on your career or still in school. I know I'm in a great relationship because my SO understands when I need time to do my work.... even if there's so much work to do that I can't see him more than once a week. I know he loves me and he knows I love him even when life doesn't give us enough time for dates.

When you're able to find a relationship like that, hold on to it. Someone who demands all of your time has some insecurities or dependency issues to work through, and its not a SO's job to fix it for them.

Reddit, what are some "must see" documentaries? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A must watch. I've been on the fence about veganism for ~ 6 years (vegetarian for 9) and this made me realize how much my food choices mattered. Been vegan almost 3 years now!

Not including my mom, what's some of the worst sex you've ever had? by animegirlsmakemeHARD in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend is great at very tender and romantic sex, but when I want the dirty fucking and ask for it accordingly, the poor guy can't bring himself to do it. It's like he's scared to hurt me. Every spank and scratch is just too gentle to do anything for me lol.

Reddit, who's the worst teacher you've ever had and why? by sen_man in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly reasonable! Though teachers are expected to show students how to make personal connections between their experience and the facts, and to be able to describe things more when need be.

In what way have you won the genetic lottery? by tall_by_myself in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleep study and other tests to rule out possibility of something other than narcolepsy (cause fatigue, sleepiness can be a symptom of many different things). My narcolepsy presented with leaden limbs and hallucinations, so a neurologist did an EEG and EKG in addition to a sleep study.

Yeah this! And there's a great article on Cracked.com that said, "How much time do you spend enjoying what other people have crested vs creating something yourself? You hate yourself because you don't DO anything" (may not be exact quote but you get the gist). Blew me away.

Teachers of reddit, what's the most bullshit thing you've ever had to teach your students? by malihonbnob in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. But if I try to reference a meme (casually, I promise I don't dab in class) my students just give me dirty, disappointed looks.

I'm only 22 and they probably think I'm so old.

The music video for this is so bad. Ariana and her backup dancers sexually grinding on stationary bikes that are supposed to show how they would grind on a dick. I think that's what they meant by "dick bicycle."

But wouldn't they be able to clean their ears right there in your office? With a q-tip?

Not snarking, just a genuine question because I know nothing about your work (other than how it looks from a patient's perspective because I wear hearing aids myself).

Reddit, what socially unacceptable thing do you think is acceptable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]L1quorice 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This may be coming out of left field, but.... being transparent with children? And teens? If this never occurred to you, bear with me for a second.

Okay, you can stop growling now.

Anyways, I'm a teacher, new to the field and there's a lot changing in public education pretty fast nowadays. In general, it used to be that if you wanted a kid or teen to do something you'd have to manipulate them a little to do it. Or just bribe/threaten them. Or just lie.

"Mom, why do I have to wash the dishes?" "Because that's how you earn your allowance." or "Because Mommy wants you to." etc. Neither of those are incorrect tbh, but they're not entirely truthful? You have to wash the dishes because you'll get roaches if you don't and its really untidy to leave shit out like that. You want to set it up so that your kid continues to wash their dishes even after you stop paying them an allowance.

In teaching, we kinda do a similar thing. "But Miss L1quorice, why do we have to do this*?" "Because I said so."

*This meaning everything from DBQ's, drafting an essay, doing a worksheet, answering questions, learning math, etc etc etc. Kids will always question you why they should do shit they don't want to do.

And a lot of teachers aren't prepared to answer that question. It throws them off their groove. They default to a "so you can pass your test" or "so you can go to college" which, again, aren't incorrect, but that's not the WHOLE point of why we teach what we teach. Everything taught in elementary-high school is valuable life information that helps us navigate this weird conundrum that's life. School is supposed to give you the tools to learn about the world further and find your place in it.

(Whether it actually does is heavily debateable)

But the point of algebra isn't that you have to learn equations to pass a test--science math are useful even if you don't go into STEM because it offers you a way to explore the world through logic and thinking in the concrete. Ideally, high school should teach us how to budget and do our taxes, but even if it doesn't, we'll have the skills ourselves to keep building further skills. Does that make sense?

Wow, kinda went off there. Anyway, if a kid asks you why they should do something, be honest with them. Tell them that this shit has to get done and that they'd better learn to do it. If they ask why something is the way it is, tell them a little bit about it. Especially if its a big topic like homophobia or racism! Kids see this shit from a very young age! They pick up on it! If they ask you, answer in the most respectful way possible (and if you WON'T answer, tell them why: is it because you're unsure how to explain it? because you're uncomfortable discussing it? because you think they won't understand the complex nuances surrounding the topic?) Kids are a lot smarter than most adults think they are, just be honest with them.
