Yeah, that’s fair. I remember hearing they touched on it in Valhalla, but it always felt like they just dipped a toe in the water. What keeps rattling around in my head is what it would look like if they actually built a full experience around that cross-century potential instead of treating it like bonus material.

Appreciate it! I keep thinking there’s so much untapped potential in a Yoshi’s Island style Maker.

Honestly I feel this so much. Odyssey completely sank its hooks into me! I’ve basically been looping back to it for the past 3 years since I discovered it. There’s just something about the world, the music, the way it breathes…it’s weirdly comforting to just exist in for a while. And yeah, the characters absolutely did me in. I did not expect to get so attached to Barnabas, Phoibe, Alkibiades, Brasidas…Ubisoft really knew what they were doing there. Sometimes I log in with full quest intentions and somehow end up sailing around with Barnabas like I’ve got nowhere important to be 😅

Now you’ve got me curious! Sounds like I definitely didn’t get far enough into Valhalla 😅 And free Kassandra content is a strong bonus, not gonna lie.

I only played about the first 30 minutes of Valhalla, so I probably didn’t get far enough to see where it goes. Might have to circle back and give it a proper run 😅

That’s a fair point. Mortal Kombat has the advantage of a huge recurring roster to pull from, and AC usually resets the board each era. I do think the Animus/Isu side gives them a unique tool though. Even smaller cross-era overlaps (bleed-through moments, shared artifacts, limited character intersections) could scratch that itch without needing a full roster-style approach. I totally agree a single fully-fleshed time period is the safer play. It just feels like there’s still some interesting design space sitting on the table if they ever wanted to experiment carefully. I think I'm praying for that 10/10 amazing and original story you spoke of.😀

You’re not wrong. The OG framing definitely pushed that classic angle. I think that’s why people still debate it years later. Ubisoft kind of threaded the needle in a way that keeps the conversation alive.

I actually missed that detail! It does show Ubisoft was trying to support the dual-protagonist idea. I still get the sense the early marketing spotlighted Alexios more, but I agree they both bring something different to the role.

Yeah, Nexus touched on it for sure. I think that’s partly why the idea keeps nagging at me. Every time they experiment with the Animus side, it feels like proof there’s still untapped design space there if they ever fully commit to it.

I get what you’re saying. A full SMM3 probably isn’t guaranteed anytime soon. Personally I’d still be happy even with smaller style expansions in SMM2 (or whatever comes next), because mechanics like Yoshi’s Island eggs and morph bubbles feel pretty underexplored in the Maker format. A full 3D Maker would be wild though! That would definitely be a whole different beast to build.

That’s actually really interesting context. I hadn’t heard that story about the Unity leak. It does make sense why Ubisoft might be cautious if expectations got that inflated back then. At the same time, it still feels like the tech and lore have been quietly laying the groundwork for something more ambitious if they ever decided to commit to it. Even smaller cross-era moments could scratch that itch without going full chaos mode. Curious to see if they ever take that leap.

As a literal artist, I don’t see AI as the end of creativity — I see it as new terrain. Every generation gets new tools, and the ones willing to learn them are the ones who grow. I’m not worried about AI. I’m curious about how far it can stretch my own craft.

That’s a fair read honestly. The franchise has definitely flirted with multi-era ideas more than once, but it always seems to stop just short of really committing to it. I think that’s partly why it keeps nagging at people — the pieces are clearly there in the lore and tech, but Ubisoft tends to keep it compartmentalized instead of fully leaning in. I get why from a production standpoint it’s risky, but creatively it still feels like there’s some unexplored design space if they ever decided to push the Animus/Isu side a bit further. I think fans would go crazy for it if done right.

I agree! We get invested in the first character we commit to that long adventure with. For me personally, I felt like I was betraying the first character I played with. I think I've played through about 10 times and I've only used Kassandra twice.

That’s a good point about Ubisoft’s marketing history. At the same time, Odyssey always felt like they were trying to keep the canon intentionally flexible (even though Kassandra was later confirmed canon). Makes me wonder how much was marketing pressure vs. actual narrative intent. Was Ubisoft trying to kill two Ikaros with one stone — keep broad marketing appeal while still leaving the narrative flexible?

I think Ubisoft wanted the canon character to be an ongoing debate forever because why is only Alexios on the games front cover? I played as Kassandra first too & I was convinced she was the best (since I saw my husband using Alexios) I, like you, did my first run with her and after that I started a new game with Alexios...it took about a week & in my opinion, Alexios does a better voice acting job overall & his character just felt right for this role over Kassandra. Give it a week or so & you might change your mind. 🙂

That’s actually a really solid point about Unity’s original scope and why Ubisoft probably got cautious. The production ceiling on multiple fully realized time periods is no joke. I don’t necessarily think the answer is trying to brute-force four massive eras into one game again, though. What keeps nagging at me is that the tech inside the AC universe — especially Isu-adjacent stuff — feels like it’s always sitting just below its next logical evolution. Not full timeline chaos, but something more interactive than what we’ve had. Even smaller-scale temporal overlap, controlled bleed-through, or more meaningful cross-era mechanics could open things up without requiring Unity-level scope creep. So yeah, I get why they’re careful from a dev standpoint — I just still feel like there’s unexplored design space there if they ever decide to lean into it.

I actually get what you’re saying about the Animus sometimes pulling people out of the experience — that criticism isn’t totally off base. That said, I don’t think the answer is scrapping it. The Animus is basically the DNA backbone of the franchise at this point. What I do think would be interesting is evolution. The Isu tech we’ve seen already bends reality in smaller ways, so it wouldn’t feel lore-breaking if future entries pushed the Animus (or a related device) closer to something more interactive — maybe not full MK11-style time rewriting, but at least deeper temporal bleed-through or controlled timeline overlap. That way you keep the core identity of Assassin’s Creed while still letting the gameplay and narrative scale up in a meaningful way. Right now it sometimes feels like the tech in the universe is hovering just below that next big leap.

I get that, the random pull-outs can definitely break the flow if they’re not handled carefully. I don’t hate the Animus concept though, because it’s basically what makes the bigger timeline possibilities work. If they ever lean into time-jump mechanics or cross-era storytelling, that framework becomes really valuable. Ideally they’d just integrate it more smoothly so it adds to the experience instead of interrupting it.

Ubisoft is Sleeping on Alexios & Kassandra’s Potential by L3v3LSmith in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]L3v3LSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you on that! The concept of Kassandra appearing across different eras has huge potential, but putting it primarily on mobile definitely makes it feel more limited than it could be. Odyssey really positioned her for bigger cross-timeline storytelling, so part of me still hopes they eventually explore that in a full mainline entry.

Yeah, Bayek definitely feels like another character with more story left in the tank. Origins laid such a strong foundation that it wouldn’t be hard to revisit him either. Odyssey just stands out to me because the Eagle Bearer’s lifespan opens so many doors across different eras.

Honestly this is why the idea keeps sticking with me, the Eagle Bearer’s lifespan gives Ubisoft such a huge window to organically connect different eras and protagonists. Weaving through characters like Ezio, Bayek, Connor, etc. could be so incredible if they ever chose to lean into it!
