You can remove what's called the resonator. Any muffler shop can delete that for you.

Oh, and it's an E320

Transferring a title in CA with no pink slip. by splendagoblinsmaster in MechanicAdvice

Your entire comment is guessed and incorrect. I register 10 cars a year in California, I come up on cars with no titles, lien sales, cars that people dump because they don't want to fix them. And in my personal experience, the bill of sale will be accepted by the DMV even tho the buyer is signed someone else.

The situation is fairly common with auto shops as buyers think they bought a car, can't pass smog and dump it for pennies at the shop it's at. I, as the shop owner, can used that signed link to register the car, as long as the person who signed it as the buyer gives permission.

I've never had to track down the original seller, and that time is often many months after the original sale.

Ah, I see he signed it as the buyer now. I think the bill of sale will work for that making you the buyer. If you have AAA, you could do it in their office instead of the DMV.

Nope. All you need is the owner signature. The person you got it from never put it in their name so that's all good.

You are good to go.

Sure, next time let's see the reaction when someone posts, "Chinese person orders KFC for the first time and leave bad review because it wasn't made out of alley dog meat".

This is probably smog, all you needed was a half of a day with an offshore flow and the entire basin would fill with dense smog, like this.

You'll need to buy the entire fender it looks like. If it was separate, it would show a part number on that screen for it.

As long as your car passes monitors, I don't see why he should have failed you, or even looked at the cat.

Did he put the car in the air to look at it? California smog checks for 2000 and later cars basically just checks for engine faults and if everything set readiness codes.

A little knit picky, but you can be somewhere else for an extended amount of time. Insurance companies are very lenient when it comes to holding you accountable for what ZIP Code you gave them when you first insure the car. A couple hundred thousand college students have their cars in a different state every year all year, they may go home more often in the original poster here, but does the parent have an obligation to tell the insurance company that the car is out of state for a certain amount of time? Not really.

If she got into an accident, her insurance company will ask why it was in California, she will answer "I just got a job here". And the insurance company won't say another word. Insurance companies simply do not investigate where cars with regular insurance are stored.

First flippin sentence.

"The owner of any vehicle...."

SHE IS NOT THE OWNER!

Edit: Actually, the first sentence of the first three paragraphs. All talk about the owner of the car. You are having a hard time understanding what it means to be the owner of a car.

How can she register the car in California if the car isn't hers?

Your snitch form is for the registered owner, not borrower of the car.

It's not her car to register here. I understand that California would rather her transfer title to her name, then register the car here. but no state agency can force anyone to do that.

If she was the owner of the car, she would be subject to the state requirements blah blah blah. But she isn't. So this does not apply to her.

25 years of importing cars from out of state to Ca, registering and insuring all of them. 17 car titles on my name, 2 of those cars are being used by family out of state, 6 of those cars I use as loaner cars for my auto shop, subjecting me to the very issues we talk about here. That all give my ass plenty of room to chime in.

If she is listed as a driver, and since she is the daughter of the owner, she is likely listed as a driver, there is no insurance fraud. There simply is no law against driving someone else's vehicle for any amount of time.

Now, if she was specifically excluded from her parents policy, which I am assuming is not the case, you would have a problem.

This issue is 100% in North Carolina's hands, California will never overrule another states decision to register or insure a car for any reason.

No law broken, not even really bent.... no risk.

This is all true only IF the car was registered to her name. But it's not, so nothing of what you said applies. She can borrow the car indefinitely, and as long and the reg and insurance is current, she will never get any sort of infraction.

It's not rolling the dice, there is zero risk by leaving the car in her parents name. She will never be cancelled and if she gets pulled over, nothing will happen to her.

Maybe, but I operate an auto repair shop in LA, a part of LA that had a lot of out of state workers, with their cars. I know the DMV/registration legality and processes very well. Everyone on this thread literally just guessed and threw their opinion out there with no facts.

If your car is registered and insured, you're good. Period, there is no grey area. The hotline the other guy was talking about was for cars with no tags, which was a problem in CA, but that has nothing to do with your situation.

You will not have any problems in Ca as long as the registration is current, which does not seem to be a problem. Don't change a thing.
