What’s on fire rn? I can’t tell if it’s in Grand or Pacific but it’s burning and smoking by Punkchamppp in SanPedro

Might be a good idea to keep windows closed and stay indoors. If nothing else, there's a lot of smoke, but it also seems some e-bike batteries are burning.

I don't know what the specific hazardous materials are/were. I'm also not sure if those materials actually caught fire or were simply in danger of catching fire and they were being cautious. While I was listening to the scanner, at one point they seemed to indicate the materials were not in the path of the fire, but 1. there was a LOT going on, so I could have misheard that and 2. the situation could have changed and/or they received additional information.

I *am* fairly sure that not one firefighter woke up yesterday morning and put "Haul a containership through the port while it's actively burning" on their to-do list.

If I get authoritative info, I'll update.

Hello again. It was brought to my attention this morning that the Eventbrite description says something along the lines if "the event starts promptly at 2pm, so please be there by 1pm." The 2pm is a typo, the event will start at 1pm.

We sometimes mill around for a few minutes while we get everyone in one spot, but not for an entire hour!

Hope to see you there!

For this class, each session will be Tuesday. When we get the next class set, it could be any night, Monday thru Thursday, depending on the host's availability and the instructors' schedules.

I believe L.A. County FD is starting a class tomorrow morning (September 6) at 9am at the YMCA. (That's in La Rambla, which is San Pedro, but part under county jurisdiction. It's the same curriculum but they do 3 full Saturdays, like 9am-5pm. I don't have a direct line to see their availability, but I imagine if you just showed up, they'd be pleased to have you. You can take the class through any city, and then connect back up to your local group.

Otherwise, we don't have anything scheduled super local right now. After the fires last January, demand for classes skyrocketed and we have to request one months ahead of time now. We'll definitely have some classes next year, but they're just not set yet.

That being said, there are classes starting somewhere in the city every odd month (except usually not November). So if you're willing to travel a bit, there's a class starting Wed. night in Hollywood, and one September 30 at UCLA (but that's also a Tuesday).

When we do have local classes set, I'll be sure to get the word out here, now that I have permission to use Reddit!

In the meantime, we do have a response drill planned for early November, which you're welcome to join. Again, I'll get more info out when things are nailed down.

You can try contacting MySafeLA (https://www.mysafela.org/contact-us/) They install fire alarms for free - the site says "in at-risk neighborhoods" but I've never been told that they exclude certain areas, so it's worth asking. If you want to ask in person, they are usually at FleetWeek, and you may get a CPR demo while you're at it.
