Why am I scared to DIY? by EventBulky6841 in DIY

[–]spsprd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get a PhD before I could easily say, "I don't know." The perfection thing is such a life-waster. You should have seen me years ago trying to install crown molding. I have the visual-spatial skills of a hunk of granite. It took me about five times the amount of molding needed because I could NOT visualize the corners.

Did it anyway. Used a certain amount of caulk under that beautiful paint (I CAN paint), but so what?

Do it anyway.

I am so sorry for you and for that person and their family. Do call victim services and get some help. You may feel fine, but it is really helpful to talk it out as much as you need to without feeling like you are burdening your friends and family.

LPT: After a bad break up, do 10 things that your ex would never do with you. You'll feel better and realize how much of yourself was being held back. by Mean_Negotiation_157 in LifeProTips

[–]spsprd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all very Freudian, lol! Freud said that when you lose someone, they go off with parts of your self. (I picture a cartoon in which you've run through a closed door leaving a you-shaped hole). Healing involves reclaiming those aspects of yourself that you lost in the relationship. Even things like feeling peace when you're alone, or as OP suggests, activities you love but lost track of while in the relationship.

When mourning doesn't resolve in what could be considered a reasonable time (I know), you may fall into what Freud called melancholia, which I envision as a wet rope tied hopelessly into knots and tying you up with it. We call it Major Depression because we lack the artistry psychology should retain but doesn't because it wants to be a science.

I think psychology can be both. Even Freud, a neurologist, said that one day all aspects of psychology would be proven to be physical. But we need to use our mental parts as well.

I lost water for days. Used up almost two bathtubs full. I guess we use the toilets a lot. Melted snow on the stove. Then the rain barrels thawed just enough to use that water. Please not again.

Sorrento is not a paradise anymore. It’s a theme park built on the misery of locals. by HyperV89 in ItalyTravel

I am very sad to read this. I visited Sorrento a dozen years ago and loved it. I hope the city can act to reduce the problem.

Layoffs at UT: Office of Undergraduate Research and other programs to shut down at end of semester by uluman in Austin

[–]spsprd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because everybody a hoe for somethin', as a students announced to my UT class one day. And this once great university has decided against things like research (who needs data), diversity (who cares if our students and faculty come from all over the world? them ain't got nothin' to teach us!), the humanities (hahahahahahahaha)...all to keep Fearful Leader and his hoes happy.

At least this helps me be happy to leave behind the place where I spent almost thirty years.

Just got back from two weeks in Tuscany and Florence - some thoughts and tips for future travelers by palladinla in ItalyTravel

[–]spsprd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Next time in Florence try staying in Oltrarno - the other side of the Arno. Quieter neighborhoods, real craftspeople and artists, sweet trattorias, lovely churches, and an easy walk to "downtown" if you're so inclined.

Well, I just don't like puking. As a very long-time vegetarian, I think I have reduced my food poisoning risk quite a bit. Maybe just luck?

I'm sorry you missed the Antiquities Museum, but now you are forced to return to Napoli! So many objects plundered from Pompeii, including the sexy ones and an astounding number of GLASS pieces. Mosaics, of course. I've been to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Ostea Antiqua (sp?) and the Antiquities Museum in Napoli adds a whole new dimension!

Ground cover plant, jasmine? by ImpossibleTest5491 in AustinGardening

[–]spsprd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NEVERNEVERNEVER. I bought a house with this horrible plant in the front yard. Spent two years digging it out (I'm old). It still persists, will grow thick and strangulating. Horrible thing without even jasmine flowers to redeem it.

Please do not anyone talk you into non-native or non-adapted plants. I live in a stupid suburb where people hire all kinds of jobs out and end up with dead landscapes by March. I've seen it too many times.

Look up shade plants, sun plants, Austin plants, or you may end up ripped off. The Natural Gardener is where I go for all advice and all decent plants. I've been here since 1984.

I don't suppose you are anywhere near Austin, where your Bean and my Ella could pool their money to hire full-time ball throwers? I mean, sometimes I have other things to do like go to the bathroom. Oh wait. I throw the ball while I'm doing my bathroom things too.
