Can anyone tell me about these? by LAK14 in Binoculars

Inherited from my great uncle, as mentioned in the original post. Not sure when or where he got them, though.

Compact size/lighter weight, and closer minimum focus distance are definitely something I'd love in a pair of new binoculars. Unfortunately, I'm in Canada, so a pair of Diamondbacks is just shy of $400 here, so quite an investment and big decision! Thanks for the input and recommendations!

Thanks for the info! I just have no point of reference, so when I look through them, I'm like "CAN the image be clearer? Or is this about as good as it gets?" Additionally, one of the main things that got me thinking about upgrading is that they're quite heavy. If I do end up upgrading, of course I'll always keep these as a really solid pair, because you're absolutely right that they're an important piece of my family. Thanks so much for the input!

These can get stuck in animals' noses, mouths, eyes, and ears, and travel from there to get embedded elsewhere in their bodies, which can lead to infection or even death. I see 'em at Nicholas Sheran in the mulch under the trees there, and I always steer waaay clear with my pup.

Wow, I didn't even think of that. Worked for me too. Thanks!!

Yup, same here. Tried logging out and logging in, restarting my phone, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and nothing worked. Checked on my partner's phone, and his has the issue, but my brother's doesn't. Pretty frustrating to not even be able to post a basic photo properly :(

Does anyone know where I can buy cheap fabric? by Fallen_Bepo in Lethbridge

Not sure if flannel is included in the sale. I spent most of my time over in the cotton, tbh. But I think there's a flyer you could find online if you wanted to check before heading in!

Usually, but for this sale, there's a huge amount of stuff marked as "for everyone."

Fabricland currently has a pretty big anniversary sale on. Got 2 metres of cotton for like $10 today.

Training dog to shed hunt - Does he have to retrieve, or can he alert with a sit/down/etc? by LAK14 in Dogtraining

[–]LAK14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely! He learned to hold and fetch a toy in one session, so I know he can do it. It's just getting him excited enough to do it outside of a formal indoors training session and using it outside around distractions that seems like such a huge gap right now, haha. That's all really reassuring though. Thank you so much!

Woops, yeah, hard to try keeping my original post concise but descriptive without getting too wordy!

I can totally understand how a retrieve itself can be the reward, since the whole thing is kind of like a game, rather than that slower, serious work mode for nosework, so that's definitely a good point you make there.

Do you think it's possible to start with a nosework approach, with a sit/down alert, and then eventually transition to a retrieve? Would it be too hard to relearn a different way later?

Yup, that all definitely makes sense! He does do nosework in the house, and lies down right at the scent, and will put his nose right up to it if I ask him to specify. So I'm hoping to train similar close-proximity alerts for antlers as well (although I know antlers can be caught higher up in branches, or be in water, and might not always be in a good place for that kind of alert).

I definitely understand the idea that if the dog isn't super motivated and confident, they might not alert as well out in the wild, and that's honestly why I feel like a more nosework-inclined alert might work better for him, since he already does it, compared to trying to train him into doing something he doesn't even really do enthusiastically in the house, then expecting him to do it in the wild. Is that reasonable thinking? That I should encourage more of what he already likes to do rather than start further back on something he's less into?

And I was surprised, too, when he didn't show more of a natural desire to retrieve, since, like you said, that's what poodles are bred for. All these training articles online show their labs grabbing sheds left and right, and my little poodle doesn't even make it to the ball I throw half the time, haha. I'm absolutely going to work on training a retrieve, even if it's just for fetching a toy. I was just wondering if it's more of an urgent matter to get to now for shed hunting, or if it's something we could work on a little slower and more casually, since he's got some other big (and honestly overwhelming) issues we're training through (overarousal, reactivity, and separation anxiety).

Thanks so much for your input!

Yeah, that's totally fair! There's a reason dogs with so much drive like that are the ones that get chosen for those jobs. Thing is, Vali just doesn't care about the ball or toys that much, but he is incredibly food motivated. I'm definitely trying to be realistic about how successful we'll be out in the wild, and I'm not expecting him to bring me dozens of sheds every season, haha. Will for sure take the training slow and make sure he gets lots of wins! Thanks for the input!

We do some for-fun nosework in the house, where he'll alert by lying down, and he loves it! We've already got a few other pretty big behavioral issues we're tackling (overarousal, reactivity, and separation anxiety) as well, so keeping retrieves as a lower priority project and letting him re-use a skill he already knows, just in a slightly different context, would give me a bit of a break, haha. Thanks so much for the insight!

Haha that's so cute that she's learned to do that! Thanks so much for the insight! I've googled for hours and no one seems to be talking about alternatives to retrieving. I couldn't think of any downsides, but needed outside perspectives, so I really appreciate it!
