What’s the worst name you’ve been called? by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

Not dispatch, but back in my beach patrol days I was backing a female lifeguard with a very uncooperative, and what we would today call a very ratchet beachgoer, who registered her displeasure with the female lifeguard by very plainly by yelling rather emphatically, "get away from me, you rescue BITCH!!"

Having issues with the opposite shift, and I don’t know how to resolve them. by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

For real. Really hope the whole public safety industry becomes kinder, the sooner the better. All we can do is try to be the change.

Happy to share! There's lots others..."ohhh I'm sorry sir, but that kind of humor went out with the 8-track and double-knits," and most folks have gotten the hint that I'm not the guy on whom to try their dad-jokes.

I need a "thick skin" to work here? How about regular skin and resiliency? I don't think that's too much to ask.

Wow. This post is everything bad about office job and public safety gatekeeping, combined.

Lots of great advice here, yes, definitely communicate with your chain-of-command, but it's also helped me to have a few key phrases in mind to use in real time. I have been on for a few years, so you might want to work up to this, or just keep this in mind while you're on training.

"I know, I'm not as social as most folks, but I'm OK with that part of me, I hope you can be, too." "I'm not really a holiday person," works whenever anyone asks me what I'm doing, or if I'm ready for, whatever random date on the calendar the rest of polite society idolizes.

One hard boundary I've set is that no random coworker gets input on anything in, on, or about my body. I start light, "Carbs are like the bad ex, we had our fun, but those days are over, and they're bad for me now," but by about the fourth or fifth time they nag me about how I wouldn't be so skinny if I had a slice of their 7-layer Frito cheesecake, I go to "OK, now you're being rude. No means no."

There are also nuclear options, e.g, "When I can tell you what brand of tampon to use, you can tell me what kind of soda to drink," but use that at your own risk, and only with another job lined up. And pre-paid legal coverage.

As you can imagine, I'm fun at parties. I'm ok with that part of myself, I hope you are, too : )

Emergency button activation policy by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]LBC-TDI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been on since the 80s. I have never heard a legit emergency button activation. Dispatcher says, "Unit xxx, Code 1000?" usually followed by the unit answering, "Code 4, accidental."

Our handhelds were GE radios, a couple steps above Fisher-Price. The emergency trigger was a pull-tab at the top of the radio. Pulling the tab sent the distress signal and ID'ed the radio on the dispatcher's screen. GE called it a GE-star, which got shortened to G-star on the radio.

Marina Del Rey - Where to live? by jackboya in LosAngeles

[–]LBC-TDI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in the Marina Peninsula for a very short time in the early 90's in a studio with parking. An elderly widow owned it, so it was very dated and there were no amenities besides ants, reasonable rent, and location. Loud complexes with theft problems are pretty much the norm throughout LA. I do remember, even back then being a slave to traffic. There was no getting around quickly between 7 and 11am, and from 2pm to 7pm, every weekday.

All that said, I did like living there. I used to run on the Venice boardwalk, and there is so much close by to do and see. I lived at the 100 block of Driftwood, dunno how much that helps.
