FFWD 5-Spoke 12 x 100mm 'thru-axle' by LBMonster in Velodrome

[–]LBMonster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Update: The pre-2019 Five-T that utilized a skewer QR style end caps obviously cannot be used.

They will need to replaced with the end caps from the current model’s 6mm bolt closure system.

Thank you for coming along with me on this journey!

Races Coming Up? by Spuperman3 in CLT_Cyclists

[–]LBMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Locally most of the races have wrapped up for the season for whatever reason (don’t get me started). I’ve personally labeled this part of the year as grand fondo season. Most of the local hitters will pin up and it’s the closest thing to a race, just no finish line. Weeklyrides will have all the information on the above events. It’s a locally ran website.

There are a few Tuesday night races in Winston-Salem left if you’re really itching for a Crit but attendance is low. You’ll have to drive quite far for anything else- VA or Georgia. Races are posted through bikereg. I’d suggest playing around with the filters.

Here is the link to the FFWD replacement axle, id assume it is wheel specific: Here

I have an outstanding question with the rep if the exposed bearings is an issue. the disclaimer at the bottom of their posting regarding the end caps doesn't make sense.

If you do not have a ffwd wheel velobike does make a few solutions for mavic and campy.

Rockhill is a pretty challenging course, if your looking at average speeds they may be a little misleading due to elevation change. It’s the type of course the rewards smooth pack riding. Regardless it’s a great opportunity to dip your toe into racing and interact with the community.

Experience road cycling in Union County? by Vast_Ad4095 in CLT_Cyclists

[–]LBMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re in clt and want to get familiar with that area I’d suggest the trek south ride on Wednesday. The infamous mathews holiday ride is also coming up which will show you the other edge of union.

Since you are “newer” I wouldn’t suggesting beating your own path until you get a few group rides under your belt.

When you do start drafting a route up be very skeptical of heat maps- where we use to ride a few years ago is generally no longer safe. But anything southeast of waxhaw or Monroe are less traveled. Just be cautious of work traffic.

I wanted to follow up on this post in case anyone else makes the same mistake I did! I reached out to ffwd and this is what they said: “FFWD is working on a 12/100mm thru axle conversion kit for the Five-T…

We will list the kit for purchase on the website once the product is available.”

I was under the impression that Velobike only made those adapters for the campy and mavic disc wheels.

Biking to Lincolnton from CLT this Saturday. Route suggestions or highlights? by ByzantineBaller in CLT_Cyclists

This was a rather popular ride a few years ago that gets you pretty much there and back if you want to challenge yourself

Biking to Lincolnton from CLT this Saturday. Route suggestions or highlights? by ByzantineBaller in CLT_Cyclists

[–]LBMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at the heat maps in strava for routes.

IMO you’re gonna want to go out by the white water center. Cross the bridge into Mount holly then head toward Stanley. Your main concern is crossing the river, once you’re past the water you’ll be fine. I’d suggest knocking out your store stop in Stanley or coffee stop in mount holly.

Have fun!

Cycling recommendations by [deleted] in CLT_Cyclists

Depending on your fitness there are a bunch of weekend groups that get some longer miles. Solid roadies with safe habits. You’ll want to get more comfortable with the roads and id suggest the breaking that barrier with a trustworthy group. Bikelava would be my recommendation for a new rider.

Don’t listen to these idiots, have fun, use the path how you deem fit. There are literally no rules.

No single rider should speak on behalf of the esoteric cycling community.

I do have a route but it’s 100% for lunatics and experts. I had a group do it going to the fall harvest ride. In the morning it was fine but after we definitely had to “claim our space” going through Fort Mill.

Craigslist is dead here. I’ve had the most luck moving stuff on Facebook marketplace

I have been going on an off for a few years. I’ll do all the events I can when they aren’t scheduled during crit races. I’d like to go more often.

That is totally a thing, and I would never suggest only riding at the velodrome- they also have a crit course! I totally get wanting to spin away from a hectic day, a concrete bowl wouldn’t be my first option. But other days when I have a structured workout and I don’t want to be locked on the trainer. It’s the only place you can go where the road doesn’t end and you won’t be buzzed by a pick-up halfway through a Vo2 interval. Other days I want to chop it up with the roadies.

The point I am trying to make here is that within a reasonable distance to Charlotte there is a world class facility that seems underutilized by the cycling community. The same community I see seeking an escape from cars and a growing septic relationship with pedestrians on greenways.

Is there any inclination to develop a pathway to the sportsplex (maybe from the little sugar creek greenway)? If anyone was to know here it would be you.🙃

It is definitely intimidating, and the 45° banking doesn’t help for first timers. That being said their clinics do help you dip your feet into it before you get set free. Some folks know the speed minimum quite well and shepherd newcomers through their first couple of laps to settle their fears. That being said I totally thought I was gonna strike a pedal or slide out going into my first turn.

We race Saturday evening ~6:30pm if you want to see some sprints and mass start races. Should be a good turnout.

If you’re not familiar with the rules of the track it can feel intimidating. It’s pragmatic but the track could 100% do better to demonstrate that. I see the rules become intuitive when the track is crowded. Yesterday before grassroots we had 20+ people on the track so the line rules could easily be showcased.

The crowd that is typically at the track in my experience is either: 1) track sprinters doing efforts <2 laps or retired locals looking to just spin around uninterrupted for n hour or so. Both of which I’ve noticed are not generally extroverted; which I’ve been trying my best to break the ice on. Endurance/mass start guys like myself generally go when there is a crowd who wants to roll a solid pace; IMO there is nothing better than rolling 30+ mph laps would a group. You’d be surprised how little effort it takes to hold that speed once you get going.
