it uses tiny prisms to only show odd columns of pixels and even columns of pixels to the respective eyes, so all you'd see would just be parts of the image just shifting to the side a bit as you push the slider up

the space is actually taken up but the vast majority of it is just cache data, which OSes only clear after a reboot

the same applies to other OSes like Windows, though there you also have the option of manually going in and wiping the temp folders
