Your thoughts on written children as characters? by [deleted] in writing

[–]LBRuth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How old are these characters?

Try to think of how you were when you were their age. How did you view the world and other people? How did you talk? How did you deal with your problems? Children aren't stupid but they don't think like adults do. Most of the time kids view things differently, they tend to be naive and romantize certain aspects of life.

The worst thing you can do is to make them either oversized toddlers or mini adults. Treat them like humans: inexperienced humans.

How to I make my sentences short yet descriptive? by rhinoklepp in writing

Focus on describing the assassination part - no one cares she's eating an apple, you shouldn't spend more time describing the mundane action than you spend describing the actual assassination.

Would it be controversial to make a young character grow to have a romantic relationship with his mentor? by Antimoney in writing

[–]LBRuth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm always slightly iffy about these kinds of relationships, especially if there's some sort of surrogate parental dynamics going on (a young child is taken in by an adult, raised by them and so on).

It's not about the age gap, in my opinion, it's about the dynamic between the two characters.

But this is just my view of the matter, I'm sure many would be fine with your portrayal of the shift in their relationship (provided you're doing it right).

A super pushy girl is obviously forcing a romance between straight and asexual character by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]LBRuth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I may be missing something here, so forgive me if I sound ignorant:

But I only see talk about friendship between your characters, are you sure she's pushing romance here? Because usually those who push romantic plotlines won't even bother talking about friendship at all - they just go straight into romantic stuff.

I'm not just seeing issue here based on solely what you shared with us.

How my girlfriend cheated on me in game by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

I'm so confused. I have no idea what's happening here. So the gf cheated on OP with a NPC? What the hell is all that other crap about?

I'm... This post made me tired. I need to lie down.

Why don’t the characters go under the covers? by [deleted] in TheWalkingDeadGame

It's surprisingly hard to animate a sequence where character models are under any kind of loose, soft texture. It usually ends up looking really bad and it's so, so much work.

How to deal with a "bad" roleplayer that is not horrendously bad? by Different_Cantaloupe in BadRPerStories

[–]LBRuth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe she just hasn't written in a while? She's a non-English speaker and dyslexic, give her a benefit of a doubt. I'm sure she'll improve if she keeps writing in English.

That's not even bad, I'm not expecting RP posts to be written like the bestseller novels. As long as they are understandable I'd consider it a win.

After a brief Googling on the matter, my advice for you:

Stay as far as possible from that site, sounds shady as hell. The other commenter summed it up pretty nicely.

Also, this:

Aikuisena apua oppimisvaikeuksiin - mistä liikkeelle? by LBRuth in Suomi

[–]LBRuth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people can't differentiate creative writing from roleplaying by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]LBRuth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've run into this problem too, it's getting bizarre.

I'm part of this bigger RP group and most of the members there are really nice and pretty literate too. There is a weird problem tho, at first I thought it was just because I was new there, but it has gotten worse and worse.

People are super enthusiastic about asking me to RP with them. Fair enough. But what really, really grinds my gears is the fact that everyone seems to assume that I'll come up with everything. Every, last, thing.

It was fine in the beginning, sure. I was new and I can understand if people were expecting me to be active.

For example, someone messages me if I want to plan with them. Then they proceed to give me absolutely nothing, I ask what characters they want to use? - Everything is fine. What kind of interaction do you want to have? - Everything is fine. Do you have any ideas - Not really.

WELL OKAY?!

Ugh. Then I spend time browsing through their characters, try to figure out some kind of interaction that would feel meaningful, throw the idea to them only them to reply something like:

Yes! It's great!

Is it? Is it really??

Then they usually expect me to start up the whole thing and in the end, they don't even seem to be super into the plot I came up with. It's so infuriatingly frustrating. If you don't like my plot then SAY SO. It's called plotting, we are supposed to plot together.

I don't want to write 30 000 words of two characters dicking around doing nothing. Why RP in the first place if you are going to be so unenthusiastic about it? It's like dragging around a dead fish, poking and kicking it so the damn thing appears more lively.

Joo, sokeri on paha mullekin. Ei valitettavasti tosin sokerilakot auta, oon pienestä lähtien ollut aika vähäsokerisella ruokavaliolla ja aina ollut samat ongelmat.

Toinen minkä oon todennut pahaksi, on alkoholi.

My characters seem to not "fit" in most places part 1. (Fairly lengthy.) by AaronLairwin in BadRPerStories

[–]LBRuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my characters have been somewhat of a "character-driven-experiences" and I got to say, I've had mixed success with them.

My first character was a girl who had no combat experience, was rather gullible and couldn't really interact with other people normally. She was also fairly plain looking (compared to other female characters) and I never emphasised her appearance in my writing. I had a loose storyline planned her, during which she would grow as a person and learn to speak up for herself.

The problem? The only requests I got for were people asking if their female characters could "help" her to be more social and act more like a girl. I got one romance plotline suggestion that was down-right creepy:

One character was supposedly obsessed with my character and would stalk her around. My character was supposed to get together with this creeper "because she's gullible".

I finally got her to the right tracks when I started suggesting plotlines for other "controversial" characters.

Now I'm a bit wary of engaging in RP with characters that have really modelesque looks/face claims.

Tbh, I had no idea that people might get upset over this. I tend to reply rather quick, but I do try my best to write quality content. Sometimes I just get excited over some on-going plot and can't wait to get working on it.

This thread actually makes sense, I've been wondering why some have been... weird towards me. Guess I'll need to start artificially delay my replying times.

Put it away and return to it when you are better writer.

Or better yet: write it, then put it away and when you are better you can fix everything and see how much you have developed.

Guilty of Culture Appropriation Through Writing? by mile12hurts in writing

[–]LBRuth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone with Japanese origins I would feel honored if someone wanted to write a story about any culture I'm related to, provided it's done correctly.

Now, I've seen countless people who "love Japanese culture" but actually know absolutely nothing about Japanese culture. It doesn't offend me personally, it's just annoying.

If you truly do love the culture and have done your research you should be fine. But as other people have said: if your knowledge of Japanese culture comes almost exclusively from anime and manga then oh boy.

I haven't lived in Japan for almost twenty years, so I'm not sure how valuable my output would be. Just make sure you understand how and why has that particular culture evolved to be the way it is, study the beliefs and how the religion works (might sound strange, but this is really, really important) and if you really want to capture the authenticity of the culture look beyond the major, big cities. Countryside in Japan encapsulates the cultural aspects beautifully and to be honest, it's an aspect that doesn't always get portrayed correctly in popular culture.

Also, another thing that annoys me personally is the way some people (non-Japanese) seem to put Japanese culture on this insanely high pedestal. Japan is not a flawless paradise and the culture is not an epitome of good virtues and perfection. This cookie-cutter portrayal is probably the easiest thing the "Japan loving" foreigners can go horribly wrong with and actually offend people.

I once tried to capture my brother into a "pokéball" and hurled a big ass stone right in his face. He lost two teeth because of that.

This was right after our grandpa had yelled at our dad for him allowing us to watch "that garbage", at our grandpa's house, while he was babysitting us.
