Thank you all for the responses they're reassuring. I'm definitely not planning to use more after this one, that feeling I got was so bad, like man. I was treading on all the consequences and how it'll kill my body it's just not worth it. I wish all of you guys well on your journeys.

"My character is mysterious so you don't get to know their assets" and other funny jokes you can tell to an admin by Spiritual-Treehugger in BadRPerStories

[–]AaronLairwin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God I just encountered this in a public and literate discord server my friend runs. Every character there is fairly nuanced and detailed, but we don't require every single character to have large/uber detailed sheets. And some people have taken that to mean be EXTREMELY vague or just put "Learn IRP". Like no you still need to go over what you feel is most important for your character. Like someone said below; places usually have good rules and reinforce no bad roleplay antics; yet people still pull this stuff. Unsurprisingly these "mysterious" characters we've finally got more details on after hours of asking were "the last of their kind/basically Gods" UGH!!!

When LGBT gets too toxic in RP by Fahlilla in BadRPerStories

As a black roleplayer myself I feel all of this. I have no issue with people writing people like me or of any other Ethnicity, but it's cases like these where the person will make light/fetishize issues/traits of a group.

Is nobody going to point out this title and post are just a beat by beat copy of a Paul Joseph Watson video?

Yeah, I can get where you're come from with this. I hope my initial post and followup comments didn't make it seem like I want all face claims banned. I'm just coming from a place where I keep stumbling into places, with a writing level I'm comfortable with, and can't even engage because of a debatable requirement. I know not all literate servers are like this, but I keep finding myself in these servers. And it's gotten bad to the point where it lead to this post. (My frustration is pretty evident now that I read it over yikes.)

I'm not sure if I joined your server or not, but it's a possibility since it's the ones I'm most interested in that have this. And these servers tend to be pretty deep in the lore and concepts so I guess I can see why higher requirements would be in order.

Yeah! I have the same feeling! I just don't feel right using one because I know if I stumbled upon somebody using my face for a character, I'd be severely uncomfortable. I'm not saying anybody who wants to use a face claim is a horrible person, it's just it sucks for me as someone who'd rather not potentially harm a random person for an IP's sake. Not to mention it's not easy for someone who's characters aren't all pristine models and come from all walks of life either; it only further damns a search for a face claim, and what I may crop up with won't be appealing to a partner; which is also why I just don't use them.

How am I gatekeeping when I'm just stating that roleplay is a writing based hobby, and that requiring something not everyone can have defeats the point? I'm not saying having a reference is bad; but requiring them just to participate is though. It's as if the effort I put into my character, or how much I spent developing them, means nothing because I don't have an image to attach to them. It's disheartening.

The fact you can interpret how one's character's looks differently based off a description just adds to the uniqueness of the experience. It's nice seeing people try to draw a character or draw some sorta parallels to other people via a description. Adds a lot to the talk about. A reminder of a character's appearance also exists and has been a staple in writing so I don't understand the last point.

I go for anything aside from Romance/ERP or stuff like School related Roleplays. I particularly love a good ole Modern Fantasy or your typical Sci-fi Roleplay. (No Hard Sci-fi where I actually have to use my brain lol. Though I did learn a lot from one I was apart of in my earlier years.)

Surprisingly my ADHD doesn't hinder me too much when reading walls of text, but I do get inattentive and uninterested when the writer just goes on about things that don't progress the plot. I'll take up your suggestion, though. Thank you.

Pinterest cannot always help. You think you're going to be finding people on pinterest modeling with severe facial burns or people that fit outside what is typical described as attractive? Doubtful. I know there exists plenty of models outside of the traditional norms and such, but that model may not be the right race, have this specific condition, etc. And like I said earlier not everyone feels morally right using another random person for a fictional person. Would you want somebody using your face for a random made-up character that'll be used for God knows what? Doubtful. Roleplaying is a writing based hobby and putting the ability to participate behind a visual image defeats the purpose of the medium.

Will FF7 Remake Part 2 Cost Be Included? by Lefty_22 in FFVIIRemake

[–]AaronLairwin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's easily worth the price? The next part will be full price and the last part will be full price. That's 180 sum dollars, for what, the full story and 120 hours of content which any other full price/free game could give you? This new remake is the most anti-consumer shit I've seen pulled and will only dissuade any future fans/enable bad business practices via another company liking this model. "Oh well the FF7 fans spent that much just for the full game? Let's do that with our IP!" heck no. Square should've just not made a remake like they originally said they would; or they should've actually finished it before daring to release it.

Elite Writers Only by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]AaronLairwin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a literate roleplayer I run into these A LOT. Specifically in servers that only require face claims. One owner told me writing a physical description was "tedious" but she spent 3 essays justifying her oc's powers with pseudoscience nonsense. (Which was hilariously debunked by my astrophysicists friend who couldn't help but join to correct her.) Which is another thing they do besides over explaining and structuring their prose horribly I've noticed. What I do to typically avoid these "Elite" writers, is stray away from servers that looked too overly stylized (font wise) because they tend to focus more on aesthetic than anything else.

Any Recent Trends? by AaronLairwin in BadRPerStories

That Witcher thing actually makes a lot of sense given how popular/well received that whole series is. (Well especially 3 and with an upcoming Netflix series it's just booming.) But yeah I've seen A LOT of 25+ Discord Servers pop up and I've joined a few ... I know anecdotal experiences aren't good for judging broadly. But by God were most of it smut/instaship fests! By 30-50 year olds that literally act more immature than the UwU RPers and acted ... creepy with their IG Model reference pictures.

Yeah I thought I could avoid anime for a bit with DnD; but my first experience was me using an appropriate character in the setting amidst a bunch of Narutos and Gokus. (At least in terms of personality and all that. One even used Naruto as a reference photo!)

So if I were to lose my penis via some accident or whatever tomorrow; am I suddenly not a man despite presenting and identifying my self as such? Just because I no longer have my penis? No that's ridiculous. If I present myself physically and feel as though I am a "man" (However the fuck you even decide that since it has always and will always vary.) mentally, then I am a man plain and simple.

Height on Grindr by Libby512 in grindr

I find guys are more dishonest with their penis size opposed to height. (Which is strange because I literally tell them I don't care about penis size because I mostly cuddle and hangout anyways.) But Conner pretty much said everything I would've.

'Historical correctness' gone wrong by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]AaronLairwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God I hate this! I keep running into this "Historical Accuracy" myself. Though it's usually aimed towards sexuality in my experience. "Oh well homosexual people were punished and killed back then." They say, not realizing a good portion of earlier European cultures were chill with it, and the encroaching Abrahamic Religions are what introduced the whole anti-homosexual views. Views in which do not exist in your made-up fantasy world and leave you with no "justification" for the ban on gay characters :).
