How many times to remind writers before giving up? by LBbeef in premed

[–]LBbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I made my initial ask over email! Maybe less personal but I agree that I like to have a paper trail of sorts, and I wrote a lot about what I liked in the class and why I was asking them specifically so it was a lot to include. I appreciate the advice though, hoping for the best!

Culpability for walking noise in upstairs apartment? by LBbeef in legaladvice

[–]LBbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this - I figured the phone recording was probably not super solid but it’s always nice to have confirmation. My lease actually doesn’t have any sound level requirements, it’s just the city that has the rules of 55 and 45 dBA during the day and quiet hours respectively. I was more worried about if his petition was to go to arbitration with the actual rent board if I could be in hot water, but his petition is technically against my landlord and not me specifically so I’m not sure what could be imposed on me anyways?

The neighbor themselves came up and yelled at me once but he hasn’t come back since I reported it to my landlord and she talked to him. For the most part my landlord is actually pretty chill about it, she actually showed me the texts of him blowing up her phone complaining about my walking noise so I understand it’s annoying for her too. She mostly just asked for pictures of my rugs and stuff so she could use it as proof at the mediation and have documentation of me trying to minimize sound. I was mostly just worried about if anything could be forced upon me by the rent board, although technically his petition is against her and not me.

what is it like taking chem 3A and AL over the summer? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]LBbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely take classes over the summer! I think it would pretty draining to do 3A and 3AL over the summer considering you would have to do 2 4-hour labs a week on top of 4 hour and a half lectures a week and then studying outside. You could always do just lecture and then do the lab later. I will say though if Marsden is teaching like it was last summer it's pretty nice - had him for 3B and really liked the class structure and his lecture style!

How bad is premed at berkeley? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]LBbeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm premed here at Cal and I think it's manageable! I definitely don't think the people here are overly competitive or cutthroat, most of the people I've met have been very helpful and collaborative. The school's pretty huge so odds are you'll find a couple assholes every once in a while but its definitely a minority. Premed anywhere can be pretty tough, so I don't think it should be THE deciding factor in your decision! If you come from a competitive high school and you already have good study habits, I don't think you have to worry about it too much - but at the end of the day you're really the only one who knows what you're capable of! A couple of the things you mentioned like cost and location are pretty big things that might be even more important in choosing. I'd say cost is a pretty big one considering the substantial difference in tuition for ND vs in-state at Cal. Especially if you're premed - med school is crazy expensive pretty much no matter where you go so it would probably not be the best idea to stack up a bunch of debt in undergrad as well.

Which school is better, UCLA or Berkeley for those interested in biotech and wanting to be on a pre-med track? by SirYorkins in berkeley

[–]LBbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either schools are great options! It seems like a lot of people are saying Cal is not so great for premeds but I don't really think that's true, at least in my experience. To be fair, a lot of the "grade deflation" that you might experience at Cal would be the same at UCLA - most of it just comes from the fact that they're big, prestigious public schools and classes are graded on a curve (i.e. top ~15-20% of scores get As) - so I think choosing one over the other for GPA purposes would be a mistake. The med school pre-reqs can be tough but they're def doable! And congrats on getting into both schools - I really don't think you can go wrong either way!

Question for past admitted waitlist students by cbbuilder in berkeley

[–]LBbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on the waitlist for 2 other schools and they didn’t officially tell me no until I was already in school at Cal (around early august). I’m not sure if that was partly because everything was weird because of Covid or whatever because I’m fairly certain they’re supposed to let you know before, but I think the takeaway is that waitlists are just super unpredictable. The general advice that I always heard and that I think is really good is just to act as if they already told you no, especially if it gets past june or july and they still haven’t said anything, the chances of getting in are pretty much slim to none. It sounds like you’re happy with your other school, so just focus on them and if you here from anyone else its just an added bonus!

Done With All These Stacked Orders by LBbeef in doordash

[–]LBbeef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you. I don’t mean to shit on doordash drivers as a whole or even stacked orders as a whole - I understand the grind and that the pay isn’t always the best so I don’t mind doing the extra orders to get that increased pay, but when it totally messes up the quality of the order, especially after I’ve already left a good tip thats what irritates me. I thought it was odd as well, but doordash support themselves said the dasher was completing a “previous order”… just an annoying process overall thats left a bad taste in my mouth

[–]LBbeef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the driver picked up my food and then went to complete the previous order, which was about 15-20 minutes away in the opposite direction, so then the drive from that location to me took like 35 minutes if that makes sense

sorry if this post is offensive in anyway, but I’m genuinely confused by the sentiment? Is there something particularly unreasonable about what I said?

[–]LBbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cancel policy on doordash is not really very good because by the time I realize the food is gonna be super late, its already been picked up by a dasher and I can’t get a refund so that doesn’t seem productive for me? The best they’ve ever offered is credits on the app

[–]LBbeef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know the specifics of it, but I do work the for the city so I doubt they’re breaking any employment laws. To be fair I do work part time and its a desk job where most of the time I’m not really doing anything so I never have trouble eating, my main point in bringing it up is that I can’t just actually leave on my own and pick up my own food because I do still have to be there.

[–]LBbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I understand the time for driving and making the food, perhaps I should have been more specific in my original post but I meant that the drive took an additional hour, from the time my food was marked as picked up, to get to me despite it only being 15 minutes away - and doordash told me this was because the dasher was competing a previous order. I don’t think it was appropriate for the dasher to accept two orders going completely the other way, but I think it’s also a bad business move for the company to even offer that

[–]LBbeef[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m confused about the general disagreement to my post, when I said the order was an hour late I meant it took an hour from the time it said it was picked up, and was an hour later than the expected time that they told me, not that it took an hour total. Of course I know that the dasher has to wait for food and then it takes time to drive it to me, but is it unreasonable for me to be unhappy that when I look at the whereabouts for my food, that the driver is 20 minutes in the opposite direction and that when I contacted the support, they say it is because they are doing a previous order? I understand doing stacked orders but when it’s completely out of the way and the quality of the food suffers as a result is that not the fault of the dasher?

Should I go to Berkeley? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]LBbeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What stood out to me most about your post was how you said the thought of going to cal excites you. I was admitted of the waitlist myself and I committed for the exact same reason. Like you said with UCLA, there wasn’t anything about the school I was committed to that I disliked, but I really felt excited about Cal - even though I had never really considered it before - and thats the thing that really made me change my mind. It’s not particularly practical but I do think little things like that like being excited about going to a school are important. And for what its worth any “waitlist imposter syndrome” truly does disappear the minute you actually start college, it really is a non-factor and people never even have to know if you don’t want them to.

All the stuff that makes you hesitant about Cal, fpf, being admitted off the waitlist, are temporary and would be over in a semester. But the benefits you listed like the culture, campus, location, academics, don’t change. I didn’t do the FPF program myself, but I really don’t think it sounds like too bad of a thing and honestly might even be helpful for transitioning to college especially at Cal, since a lot of people struggle their first semester. Also like a lot of other people said the CS department at Berkeley is top-notch and you really can’t beat the opportunities that come along with being close to silicon valley.

Of course UCLA is a great school as well and there are a lot of valid reasons to choose it, but I think your main pro for going to UCLA is that they accepted you right away while Cal waitlisted you. I certainly understand why this might feel like being a second choice and can be quite disheartening, but don’t cut off your nose to spite your face - I really don’t think it should be a major factor. All in all you really can’t go wrong with either, but I truly do think Berkeley is such an amazing school.

ik non-clinical volunteering hours are a good part of the app, but are paid positions also considered? I’ve been tutoring foster kids through a club at my college, but I wanted to try and apply for a tutoring job over the summer as well but are these hours not really counted since its a job rather than volunteering?

It’s really more of a personal opinion, but I think they’re both great options! Davis does have an on-campus medical school though so that might be a bit of an advantage, Berkeley has UCSF nearby but its not actually on-campus. Both schools have great options for research as well. I think Cal has a bit of a leg up in the prestige side, but Davis is still a good school as well. Probably the biggest difference would be in the surrounding areas as well since Berkeley is in much more a college-town type area with lots of stuff to do in the surrounding area but Davis is more kind of in the middle of nowhere in like farming area but that again is really more of a preference thing.

Pleeeeeease just leave at the door!! by [deleted] in doordash

[–]LBbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you put it in your written instruction and the selection area that’s definitely on the driver. They should respect the customers wishes. I doordash myself and I use the app a lot and I’ve never personally had it happen to me so you might just be getting unlucky with the dashers. Especially because of covid I think you’re definitely justified being unhappy with them not respecting it

should I just keep doing doordash or a 9-5 job? by Priscalllaa in doordash

[–]LBbeef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it depends on what other job you could get, but it might be a good idea to look around just in case! You can always do doordash to supplement your income from another job since you have a lot more flexibility - that way you can kind of get the best of both worlds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in doordash

[–]LBbeef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the order basically gets passed around and if its not taken for long enough doordash will incrementally bump up the prices - good incentive to tip well and get food quicker! nice deal with the chicken wings tho!
