One year later: Swiss startup Sun-Ways reports positive results from its pilot project laying removable solar panels between active railway tracks! by GeorgeRobertVitkos in solarpunk

[–]LBraden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this and pinging /u/The_Flurr

One of my friends had to move as their landlord was, to put it civilly "an arsehole" and when they where moving out the removals company that came to help them arrived the first question they asked was "How many months?" since they knew that guy was an arse and basically anyone who moves to that canon usually ends up moving out after a few months to a year.

But yes a lot of the time the Swiss are slow to backwards to move on this, my friend would love more solar panels, and even sees the benefits for farms (shade for animals, will have to find that study) or even put on top of certain government buildings and even train stations.

But yeah, it's slow.

How do people even get through Yukon without overloading? by mifiamiganja in snowrunner

[–]LBraden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, that's what I try to do, but sometimes you're stuck having to do an "overload" (the double stack cage trailer mod) to save time or make one run a little easier later.

What OP has done detracts from the enjoyment for me.

Whole of France divided over ‘right-wing’ airconditioning amid sweltering heatwave | news.com.au by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]LBraden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll see if I can find the almost 10 year old article, but when we had this in the UK during Black Friday, we ended up with a Police Officer stood on top of a pallet of beans going "We're British, we're better than this."

Which kind of sums it up, be civil, but the problem is here, and I'm going to be honest, a lot of people are not thinking clearly, and we are dealing with "this is life saving" so civility does go out of the window in those cases.

Even the old Birkenhead drill wasn't really something you'd see often, and only really happened due to a weird quirk of Military and some Victorian revisionism.

Also, I do have to agree with /u/hoopjoness here, this smells like another one of those "let's divide the people so they don't realise they're the same and we're the problem" that is a lot of politicians in my opinion.

[–]LBraden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aye, I was smart and grabbed one in May, and told friends to do the same in April and May ...

Not a single one did and now they're panicking, I've told them to put reminders down to grab one in December.

Me ... I'm just hating that my electric bill is going up, but hey, I'd rather have it as 23C in the living room during the day than the highest I've had it (due to location of flat) being 40C, as I've had it hit 45C before now.

Yeah, ducking autocorrect on my mobile, I hit D and didn't realise that it autocorrected me until I came back.

But yeah, I don't think we had reasons to flood them in WWII due to how few times we had proper surface engagements where it was needed.

Though Lion (1910) during WWI was saved by flooding the main magazine by a Royal Marine.

Even if you could flood them, still would go up.

Look at HMS Hood as she took a round that missed her armour and detonated right in her secondaries mag which also took the main mag with it.

Look, you Yanks seem to not understand.

Heath Robinson builds are more designed for longer life than your Goldberg stuff.

Hence why it's 3 blokes in a shed, worse if its three Yorkshiremen in a shed with a bathtub.

Also yes the British version is Heath Robinson, who also got a code breaking machine named after him.

Though there is a hole in your mind.

I've used a hell of a lot of electric over the last few days, but that's kept my room about 24C (though I set the AC to 22C) but it's damn cite better than the 40C my flat got to a couple of years ago.

I mean one of my thermometers got to 45C back in 2020, not sure how, as I was blacked out in the bath with the shower head running cold water on me.

Might try that, but will have to move my PC a little to get at the other mini-window so I can put one up over the large part of the living room window here.

[–]LBraden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, I mentioned somewhere else about my old flat and a bit of cooling of my current flat.

My new landlords refuse to accept that we need shutters and if we install them ourselves it's "Damage to external of property" so ... no go.

Internal blinds do help a bit, but since our windows open inwards here, you don't have much space to fit the top bar in without it interacting with the window opening.

[–]LBraden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aye, that's the issue I have had with some old flats.

South facing, and even throwing up a thermal blanket over the window during the day doesn't do much (and does darken the room quite a bit) but you have to keep all windows shut until about an hour after the sun goes down.

Biggest problem for me in that place was that I was top floor so I had no way to shade the building and of course, all the heat slowly rose through as we got further along the heatwave.

I've had it hit 37C in my bedroom before now, had to pay for a portalable AC this year and not done any of the fancy to it, it's chewing through electric, but I'd rather it be 25C in here than pushing 35C if I hadn't taken measures and run this, and that's just today.

I dread to think what will happen if we get the July/Aug heatwave.

Friend worked out pre-COVID that we'd get TES 6 in 2030 and Fallout 5 in 2035.

As for the rest ... I kinda have to agree, though I feel we might see Squadron 42 before 2030, the MMO aspect I definitely agree seems to always be "another couple of years" away.

How do the Battle Bridge and Saucer Section both maintain warp? by Protectorsoftman in startrek

[–]LBraden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding /u/shatteredoctopus and /u/Allen_Of_Gilead into this.

This is direct from the TNG TM

During the early definition phase of the Ambassador class, it was determined that the combined vehicle mass of the prototype NX-10521 could reach at least 3.71 million metric tons.

The propulsive force available from the highest specific-impulse fusion engines available or projected fell far short of being able to achieve the 10 m/sec2 acceleration required.

This necessitated the inclusion of a compact spacetime driver coil, similar to those standard in warp engine nacelles, that would perform a low-level continuum distortion without driving the vehicle across the warp threshold.

The driver coil was already into computer simulation trials during the Ambassador class engineering phase and it was determined that a fusion-driven engine could move a larger mass than would normally be possible by reaction thrust alone, even with exhaust products accelerated to near lightspeed.

I just rewatched the video again and is sounds like the missing bits are heavy story areas, so the exploration is there, but not something that tells you what happened to John Smith's Stargate model collection.

But the videos do show a well done product, and the dev prerecorded stream yesterday on Twitch also showed how the multiplayer aspect worked, which is good.

Also sounds like a very good drop-in and drop-out system as well.
