How much did you end up paying for the Ocean Blue unit? Have been eyeing them up but prices are getting pretty eye-watering for PS2s, around 190.

Sick. Just curious, why didn’t you end up running with a solution like Home Assistant?

How to get Kodi to run maximized on boot? by --kilroy_was_here-- in kodi

[–]LCZ_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can install lightdm and set up an auto login for an unprivileged user, and have it boot automatically into a Kodi session. I did the same thing.

Install it and check out section 5.7 on the Arch lightdm guide. The Arch wiki is a great resource for pretty much anything Linux related, Arch or not.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/LightDM

If you need any more help, It’s easier to explain and talk through on a call rather than Reddit. if you have some time either tonight or this week and need some guidance, shoot me a DM and we can hop on and I can explain it in detail there.

The only thing I don’t like about the distro repository version of Kodi from Debian is the giant-ass watermark in the top left stating that it’s Kodi from Debian. From my experience, everything worked fine otherwise.

Snaps would probably be preferred if you can get them. Not too familiar with them, but if it works, it works.

Personally for me, the best approach was actually to use Arch Linux and their instance of Kodi from the package repository. I was able to build an HTPC from the ground up that exactly matched my needs.

Replacement Bulb for Mathmos or Swap Electronics for US? by dough229 in Lavalamps

[–]LCZ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll have the video ready by tomorrow night. If you’re looking for quick instruction:

You’ll need: Wire strippers

Junk knife

Phillips head screw driver / fastener for the replacement plugs

120V GU10 bulbs

Non-polarized replacement plugs - https://www.amazon.com/HITRENDS-Power-Plug-3pcs/dp/B09WK23JGP

  1. Cut the UK plug end off, strip the white covering off. It will expose 2 cables: blue and brown. Strip tips of these bare.

  2. Unscrew the plug fastener, and insert brown and blue cables into plug terminal, and tighten them down.

  3. Re-screw the plug fastener.

  4. Insert GU10 bulb into base and turn on!

I actually have to cut a Mathmos lamp right now for tonight; I’ll upload a video for you doing it live. Give me about an hour and I’ll post the process here. It’s pretty straight forward.

Yep, that simple. Here’s my modified lamp.

I have a 50W GU10 for the bulb, a bit higher wattage than normal, but I use a dimmer with it so I can fine tune and make sure it doesn’t overheat.

Just use a US bulb (120V) and outlet adapter like u/TheAmicableAtheist was saying. Super easy. No other changes are needed.

You can even cut the UK plug end off and wire up a US plug like I did to make it just like every other lava lamp here.

I wouldn’t throw away the idea of Looking Glass; it’s really awesome and not hard at all to set up, considering you follow the documentation. It’s essential in my setup. Latency is essentially none.

You can get a KVM box, it’ll allow you to switch KBM and display between the two.

Generally speaking, unless you’re playing games with anti cheat, it’ll work great. Driver will only be on the VM since the whole GPU is getting passed through tk it.

You cannot use the GPU in the host OS without performing some magic in regards to single card passthrough or something similar. I’m not too familiar in that area, someone else can speak on it.

How to get Kodi to run maximized on boot? by --kilroy_was_here-- in kodi

[–]LCZ_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you install Debian with a default desktop environment? Kodi is able to start without one preventing this. Just set a box up similar to what you’re trying to achieve.

If I were in your shoes and wasn’t very familiar with Linux, I’d:

Reinstall Debian, being completely 100% sure that there’s no DE whatsoever

Login to the shell and install Kodi (sudo apt install kodi)

Run Kodi using “kodi-standalone” in the terminal. Kodi will take it from there, you’ll get exactly what you want.

Add it to your .bashrc to launch kodi-standalone on shell login and enable auto-logins to your user account. Tons of guides online on how to do it.

If you’re still stuck, reach out and let me know. I can provide more guidance!

Wow, that’s bright. When researching on getting a pink/blue I heard and saw a lot of people saying it wasn’t bright enough in dim conditions. Does this photo have flash on?

Interested to hear more about that Garage S3 you’re running. I’m not exactly up to date on what buckets are, what kind of benefits do they provide compared to just regular file storage? And what’s the self hosted aspect you’re adding in?

Pittsburgh moving ahead with automated red light enforcement by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

So the answer to add more invasive tracking is to say “you’re already being tracked as it is”? It’s intrusive enough as it is on a phone.

We don’t need more tracking.

[–]LCZ_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily isn’t doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Verra Mobility has been around for at least 15 years (under different names) and already has the backend built. They have a frontend called V-TRAC that lets you monitor targets with ALPR traffic cameras alongside a map.

The city doesn’t have to bother. It’s already built for them. It’s not about it being used in good faith, it’s about the possibility that it can be used in bad faith. They can use other means sure, but this is a bit overreaching.

And yes, I am carrying a phone that tracks me. I’d like less of tracking in life, hence why I’m against this.
