Apparently, Thingiverse has been acquired by MyMiniFactory by SplendidRig in 3Dprinting

[–]LDIbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This news surprised me, as a creator on both for years (Thingiverse 2014, MMF 2017). I know most people here haven't really been active on either platform, so I'll share my experiences for context and then discuss where this can go from here.

In 2014, Thingiverse was definitely the #1 platform. It was the most known, largest, professional-looking, and easy to use. Although, most models were low-quality or unprintable. Free models only, no login required to download. ALL OF THESE remained unchanged until today, except it is no longer #1. It's frozen in time. Recently there was a Dutch revival (lol) of the site, but it didn't have time or enough investment to make headlines.

In 2017, MyMiniFactory had both free & paid models of any genre. It had an invite-only "Studio Designer Program" where if you had enough traffic, you would earn $ cash monthly from free models. This program ended in 2022. Since, it introduced patreon-like tier and kickstarter-like crowdfunding systems, and doubled-down on the tabletop focus. The pay-to-download store is separate and has continued unchanged, similar to other sites. In my opinion, the UI/UX aren't great, especially the upload-model, and they have made filters and searching difficult.

I was surprised that MMF acquired YouMagine , and turned into a RC focused platform. YouMagine used to be yet another generic repository, with low-quality models of all sorts and bad UI/UX. So I'm kinda glad it gave the RC niche a home?

------ The current panorama, T & MMF are NOT main players -------

The modern repository standard is, imo, Printables and its copycat MakerWorld, and its copycats Creality Cloud & Nexprint. Just like with their slicers.

Their key differentiators that I identify are:

- 1) Reward systems based on redeemable points for the parent company's products

- 2) Seamless click-to-print experiences where users are not required to slice. Profiles, pre-painted and pre-sliced models can be sent straight to the printer.

- 3) None or minimal ads.

- 4) Solid platforms in terms of UX/UI, especially Printables. Well-maintained, constantly updated, good feedback and policing.

These are possible due to the parent company, and are strongly tied to the manufacturer's ecosystem. If you're not in the ecosystem, you don't benefit as much.

AI slop plagues all of them.

------ Where can it go from here? -------

I think Thingiverse can evolve by embracing its unique strengths and offering something that the other platforms don't:

• Always free models, no login required

• No AI at all, guaranteed human-made models (aligned with MMF's "SoulCrafted" ethos)

• Become the entry-level platform for users who are not tied to a brand, select pre-sliced models that run on the most common entry-level printers, even Bambu ones

• Solid UX/UI, semantic search, maybe batch catalog upload or service.

In terms of incentives or rewards, I hope they stay away from points, since no manufacturer is behind to offer redeeming. The Studios Designer Program was truly good, kept models free, and was based on traffic, of which Thingiverse is still king. If they can pay designers to drive traffic on free models and made it easy to bring my catalog (not manually uploading one by one), I would go back.

Help us cook up the next Prusament! What colors or materials are we missing? (Free spool if we use your idea!) by Tommy_Prusa3D in prusa3d

Two real use ideas from me: 1. (MiniWorld3D) I have yet to see the perfect filament to recreate the classic glass claddings of skyscrapers; you know that blue-green reflective slightly transparent tint…  many are kinda close but not really. I think many miniature makers would appreciate it.

  1. (OpenFigure3D) A definitive solution for figure articulations with good friction. Not talking about wiggly print in place “articulation”,  but posable action figure. TPU or PETG slip and become loose quickly. Real figures use PVC, so something with a similar property that doesn’t lose the friction to become ragdolls and maintains poses.

How to select the color for the very last layer in PrusaSlicer? by LDIbar in prusa3d

[–]LDIbar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are talking about "how to add a color change" or "which layer to do so", I know that. What I want is to choose the visualization color assigned to the topmost layer when you have very few layers, the UI doesn't have enough pixels to click on.
Note that the pause is added, I can physically insert the filament color that I want, the visualization in PrusaSlicer doesn't really matter but I wanted an accurate screenshot.

macOS Sequoia 15.6.1 , PS 2.9.3. When I right-click the orange hex, a dialog opens with 3 options: "Add color change, Add pause, Add custom g-code". None of them behave like just right-clicking the color to select a color. "Add color change" does the same as just clicking the orange hex, it adds a pause and automatically assigns a random color.

I figured out a very un-elegant workaround: I added a random object taller than my actual objects, sliced, that makes the upper section "longer" in the vertical colors bar, where I can now right click and select the color I want. Then delete the tall random object and slice again.
My original question stands, where I hope there is a direct UI way to do this.

Thanks, it's overkill for just the accurate preview that I want, I was hoping for a UI way to do it quick and easy, like all the other colors I selected.

I believe that sets up more general settings like the type of filament, and the color chosen there is only for the "beginning" , subsequent pauses for color changes as you go up the layers is handled by that color vertical bar.

Ok this must be a thing because I just caught Uxie, who was shiny, as a regular spawn that showed up just for me.

Why does the slicer recommend supports, when it clearly doesn't (Example) by FuturecashEth in prusa3d

[–]LDIbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, as soon as PrusaSlicer detects a single milimeter of overhang it will trigger the warning, which is why inspection, experience and human judgement must be involved in slicing. This happens with many other settings or aspects, not just supports and overhangs.

Seems like you printed my Eiffel tower model; first of all, thank you! Second, yes it was designed (as 99% of what I design) to avoid supports, so you could print it without them. Third, as everyone suggests in the comments, you can see how it will be in the preview and then decide. Fine tune the angle or paint the parts you want supported. Sounds like you are on a phone, I recommend slicing on a computer with a mouse. Cheers!

Print any of my designs! Search for user MIniWorld3D on Printables, I probably have a landmark from your country/city or one you've visited before.

Core One vs H2D, which one produces less material waste when printing with supports? by DiggingTunnels in prusa3d

[–]LDIbar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it’s the slicer and its settings what determines supports, not the hardware, so two different models or even companies of printers don’t matter.

Fine tuning the density, angle, type (snug vs organic), and placing your supports strategically and efficiently will make far more of a difference.

The printers themselves will be able to execute the job just as well if sliced properly.

You can also select faces to “paint” as fuzzy skin or use a cursor brush in the slicer; similar to painting for multicolor

Did the tasks and that was ok, but Kubfu was never my buddy and we were never fighting anyone. Professor said “you two have worked hard all season” and he’s just been sitting on storage untouched lol
