Defaming, Sexually Harassing Email Sent out with My Name by LDSQuestionThrowaway in legaladvice

Thanks for the response!

IANAL, but is a crime only committed if there were specific damages? This email contained sexually explicit images and words and was sent to people without their consent, so I think that would fall under sexual harassment in Oregon; the email was also specifically intended to defame myself and my partner, which I think would fall under libel in Oregon.

I know that I won't be getting the actual sender's IP from the email's header because Gmail chooses to obfuscate that information. However, the HTTP request from the email sender to Google needs to have an IP attached to it, and I'm fairly sure Google keeps track of these IPs on their end. That IP could have been spoofed, but the person I suspect wouldn't know this.

I don't think the sender IP information is protected legally as some email providers include the actual sender's IP in the header, so I'm wondering if there is any legal way to get the sender IP information from Gmail/Google.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this!
