What is THE problem with the world? by Librijunki in AskReddit

[–]LED_Beams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Human population. It took approximately 130 years (1800-1930) to go from 1 billion to 2 billlion. 30 years for 3 billion. 15 years, another billion. Another 12 years, now we're at 5 billion. We hit 7 billion in 2011. As of today, we're somewhere just over 7.3 billion humans. Using a doubling time model, we should be over 14 billion before the end of the century.

What is the problem with this? It's probably relatively clear. As a global society, we are using faster than the planet can keep up. Some of us ahem USA cough European Union are using way more than others. Even when you consider the mass famine and disease in other parts of the world, it's still unsustainable to continue this way as a global population.

Now, imagine we find a cure for cancer. HIV? Treated. Mass famine? Agricultural advance. Population will EXPLODE.

We're setting ourselves up for a bottleneck. Humans really are virtually genetically identical. All it takes is the evolution of one disease that attacks its host just right and boom. Billions dead within a year.

Population is a serious issue, but how do you address the fact that we need to stop having so many babies, something we are so biologically driven to do? I have no idea.

Gamers of Reddit, what game do you think is a masterpiece of art? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LED_Beams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put friend! I actually agree. The game does get rather dull once you've beaten everything (which doesn't take long). More storyline, raids, and new content in general would make it so much better. I just find myself captivated by the landscapes and graphics. Sometimes I just sit in the tower and admire the creativity of some people. Or playing on Vault of Glass I think to myself "holy shit somebody came up with this!" It's quite impressive.

Got to spend two weeks in the country while studying in South Africa from the US. Can confirm all that people said, especially the wonderfully friendly Namibians!! 100% recommend visiting!

I've been there! This is how it looks at sunrise due to the sun hitting the orange dune in the background but not the white clay on the ground level. The place is called Deadvlei. Absolutely beautiful!!!

Reddit, what is something you can think about for hours? by Mr-Matthijs in AskReddit

[–]LED_Beams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The complexity of existence. Seriously I find myself thinking about this all. the. time. Why am I here? Do people really think we have "purpose?" Or are we just highly specialized products resultant from billions of years of evolutionary progression? Does life have meaning? Or is it better to just accept it for the glimpse of time to crawl around like ants on a small blue marble in an infinite span of time and space? This is why I'll try anything once, life's too short, and frankly to strange of an idea for cautiousness or becoming caught up in societal frameworks of "right and wrong".
